Sox sign Gordon Beckham, designate Viciedo for Assignment
TaylorStSox replied to flavum's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 05:21 PM) Yes. Would you be happy if I said I "slightly" exaggerated? I'm prone to that. Most people just tune it out. I knew where you were going with it. I couldn't waste the opportunity to remark on Beckham's grossly overrated defense. (Thanks Hawk) -

Ultimately I don't care, I'd prefer a back up infielder that's actually a plus defender who can steal a base. I'd actually prefer L Garcia in that role, but we're talking about the 25th man on the roster so it's not a huge deal. I'd also prefer not to look at Beckham's squished face anymore, but that's a different matter. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 04:55 PM) It is exactly the argument. Is he worth $5 million? According to advanced stats, he put up just under $5 million of WAR last year, and more than that in each of the previous three years. Does that include offense? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 04:52 PM) He posted a .6 WAR last year. The fangraphs article I found from last season put the cost of 1.0 WAR at $7 million. 60% of that is $4.2 million. It isn't crazy to think we are at $8 million per war now, and 60% of that would be $4.8 million. The number isn't that crazy is you subscribe to the WAR numbers. That still wasn't the argument. I don't subscribe to any defensive metrics. I'll just leave it at that though. The discussion will just get me banned. -

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 04:05 PM) Over his career he's amassed a bit over 8 WAR and was paid about 9MM total. That's good value. That wasn't your statement. You said his defense was worth $5M last year. That's pretty crazy. He's an average, at best, defender with limited range. He does turn the double play well. That's not worth $5M. -

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 03:42 PM) for the record, when we had Beckham and were paying him $5mill, he was easily worth that on defense alone. I'm not saying I'm a fan of the move, but he had value when he was here. Seriously? -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 24, 2014 -> 06:52 AM) LaRoche is not going to have a platoon partner. You don't pay a guy $25M to be a platoon player. Yes, I know he's awful vs LHP but you just deal with that because of the tradeoff of how good he is vs RHP. Now, if you're smart, you have him batting farther down in the order vs LHP, but if anybody on the roster is a target for a platoon situation it's Gillaspie, not LaRoche. You sure about that? We just gave a guy $46M to pitch 65 innings a year. I don't think the Sox will fail to do what's best for the team because of contracts; especially a contract for a stopgap journeyman.

M Knight's explanation of Signs was that they really weren't aliens, they were demons. The movie was about Gibson's struggle with his faith. The reason water killed the whatever's was because it was holy water. Seriously. I really don't get the fascination with Snowpiercer. It's a movie that's right up my alley (post apocalyptic scifi), but I don't even think it's good, let alone in the top 10. The entire movie is just a monotone mess to me. Chris Evans also does nothing for me.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 29, 2014 -> 12:55 PM) I agree. I think there should be different clothing for coaches and the manager, even if they've done it for this long. You don't see football coaches dressing up in pads or NBA coaches dressing up in a jersey and shorts. I do not believe this will ever change because people do not believe it to be an issue, but it's really weird when you get to thinking about it. Has basketball or football ever had a player/manager? I think it's one of those quirky things that gives baseball a unique identity.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 28, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) The remarkable thing about that is...you can say in no small part that the White Sox won that world series thanks to the system that Kenny Williams helped build in the last years of the 90s when he was head of minor league development. Guys including Buehrle, Garland, Crede, Konerko were part of that system and other pieces (Carlos Lee) from it were used as trades to fill in other holes. They would not have had the ammo to build that team had they not relied on a strong minor league organization. Garland and Konerko? That's a huge, huge stretch.

Clearly a troll account.

I also think a hitter like Viciedo would be better off in a park like Safeco. His HR's will be down, especially because drives the ball better to RF, but his average would go up. I think he's a much better line drive hitter than power hitter.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) This is somewhat true except where you said it's a "myth" that the Cell is a hitters park. It's almost always an above average hitters park, but if the wind and weather are right during a season it can get down close to average. Its been as much as the 2nd best park for producing runs in baseball in recent seasons, and IIRC as low as 10th or 15th, can't remember the bottom. Most seasons it's top 8 for runs, so it's definitely a hitters park overall. But you are completely correct in that the reason why it is a hitters park is that it favors home runs strongly. It's not a particularly strong park for doubles or triples or singles, but home runs have a big enough impact that the cell is a solid hitters park. I'd be interested in seeing the numbers for road teams and how they hit there.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:51 PM) It's of the worst parks for doubles and triples. Incredibly small gaps. Imo, it makes for boring baseball.
-
Re: home/road splits I'm not sure if the numbers would completely back this, but I think it's somewhat of a myth that the Cell is a hitter's park. It's a great park to hit home runs, but it's not a great Park for line drive hitters.

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa

In that case I can forgive him for going to Notre Dame. -

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 01:15 AM) I swear, some of you simply can't be happy with any deal. They just got a top of the rotation pitcher for 2 unknowns that made it to the majors and had a small amount of "success" if you could even call it that. Beck and Danish will make most forgot the prospects of Bassitt in a short time. I'm fine with the deal. I hate to lose Semien and I'm not a huge fan of Shark, especially as a rental, but I see the logic. It definitely makes us better next year, even though I still think we're a long way away. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 01:11 AM) Bassitt has shown success at the mlb level. Why wouldn't he have value. He's has a 1.58 Whip over 5 MLB starts. That certainly doesn't equate to much value or success IMO. Beane seems to think so though. That's all that matters. -

I'm pretty surprised Bassitt and Beck have any value tbh. -

I know everyone is down on Thompson but he still is young and has a ton of upside. I think Semien has a very high floor. That's a lot to give for a rental IMO. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 12:24 AM) IF we don't sign him, yes. Word on the street when Cubs moved Shark was that it would take a deal similar to the 6yr 105M deal Homer Bailey signed a year ago. I presume his cost has increased a bit since then, but if he was willing to take some form of a hometown / favorite team discount and still take a deal similar to the above, YAHTZEE!!! Interesting. Personally, I wouldn't be in favor of that deal. I like Shark, but not for that money. He's nice to split up Sale and Q though. -

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 12:22 AM) I really don't like giving up the presumptive MLB starting 2B for the next X years for one year of Samardzija. It's well-known, I suppose, that I just don't think Samardzija is that great. I hope the Sox see something in him that hasn't really been there in his past production, which wouldn't merit this kind of return for a one-year rental I agree, but the sox know more about Semien than we do. I love him as a hitter though. I would never make that trade.
