QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 06:23 PM) I don't know why you don't just get an iPhone...jeesh That would be like choosing a Toyota over a Camaro.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 25, 2013 -> 10:57 PM) Boardwalk Empire is killing it so far in this season, such a great show. Narcisse is such a solid villain. This season actually inspired me to drop it. It's just a mini series that's been dragged out. It could have been condensed into 4 episodes and ended after Jimmy's death. Richard is the only compelling character and it's due to him being sympathetic. Nucky is incredibly unlikable and downright creepy. Chalky is boring and one dimensional. The historical connections were fun, but old and tired. Van Alden has been stripped of any characteristics that made him compelling. He went from a sadistic zealot to an infantile moron who's scared of his own shadow. Meh, it's just boring television that exists because it's a cash cow.

"Smart" is a measure of one's aptitude to learn. It's independent of your level of education or how much money you make. Shockingly, there are actually people that aren't completely monetarily driven and have values outside of of their net worth. I also appreciate the parallels people seem to be drawing between the validity of socialized medicine and the performance of a website. "I told you 'Obamacare' was a farce. The website doesn't even work." We live in a country where access to reasonable medicine is viewed as a privilege. Go USA!

Sox hire Todd Steverson as their new hitting coach
TaylorStSox replied to Boopa1219's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Hitting coach: least important coaching position in all of sports? I'd rank it just below NFL towel boy and slightly ahead of NBA mascot. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2013 -> 03:13 PM) He basically revolutionized big-game baseball, or should have revolutionized it, in his letting the starters do their thing so deep into games the whole way. Aside from that, he engineered a program that allowed his players to believe they could beat all those good AL teams en route to the Big Dance where we took care of a good but not great Houston club. He put a team on the field golden with the glove that amazed me with its efficient, professional, incredible baseball. That kind of a run thru the postseason??? Remarkable. It's belief, baby!! HO-LEE s***!!!

Is Lawrie really a big enough upgrade over Gillaspie to warrant trading a cost controlled 2-3 LH starter? His numbers don't look great. Is this just because he was a highly rated prospect? I'm seriously not following.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) Same age. Wrist injury zapped his power. Quad injury hurt his speed and range. If Beckham is healthy and can stay healthy, admittedly big ifs, he'll still be a really good player. Beckham has been a really good player once in his life. It wasn't even in this decade. The last time he was good, Sizemore was good. Morneau was good. Lincecum was good.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 02:12 PM) Well technically Beckham's ass...
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 01:59 PM) You do realize Beckham was hitting.309 when he went down with a quad injury in August. Gillaspie was no better than Tank at 3B the last 3 months of the season as well. Quad injury my ass. So the alternative to awful Beckham is a slap hitter with no power, that doesn't walk and has no speed. Sweet. Beckham has had 1975 more PA's than Gillespie to prove he doesn't belong.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) Frankly, if we're just looking for a short-term solution, run Gillaspie and Keppinger out there and wait until a solid long-term option presents itself. I've been watching Beckham fail for 4 years. Gillaspie is better right now, has far better mechanics and a far better approach. Do you realize how screwed up Beckham's mechanics are?

I think Conor's potential is similar to what I'd expect out of Headley, 270/340/420ish with 20 HR's. Admittedly, I don't know much about Headley's defense, but the GG doesn't impress me.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 07:19 AM) Headley is really a perfect fit for us. 2012 was clearly a fluke, but he's still been a productive player every other year since 2010. Get him away from Petco and into the Cell and 20 HRs seems very attainable. He's also a switch-hitter and gets on-base at a nice clip, which addresses two of our largest offensive concerns. On top of that, he's a pretty good defensive player. People need to look at how weak the 3B position is right now and reevaluate Chase Headley. Now, I'm not suggesting we go out and trade the farm for him right now. I fully expect the asking price for him to be too high for our blood. However, if you could acquire him for a reasonable price AND lock him up long-term I'd be all for it. He'd be a huge upgrade over what we through out at 3B last year. I think Gillaspie can be that guy.

QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 06:33 PM) Chase Headely for Tank Neither lived up to there potential last year. Yet Viciedo hit more HR's and had more RBI's in about 120 fewer PA's. Not that it means anything.
-
I'll add that I still like Gillespie and would like to see him get another year as an everyday player. There's no way I platoon him with the corpse of Keppinger.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 03:23 PM) Thing is you have to start somewhere. If you use this thinking the only reL way to get there is through ground-up development, which I think is not in the cards for us. I would be interested if he had more than 1 year left on his contract. It would be foolish to trade young talent for such a player.
-
I'm generally against mega contracts in baseball. Even impact players don't get enough opportunities to justify the disparity. I'd rather sign 2-3 good players instead if 1 great player.
-
I'd consider it if we were an 85 win team, but we aren't, so no. Even if we do have a good first half, he's the type of player you pick up in a mid year deal.

Easily the best directed and most emotional episode of The Walking Dead ever. I like the show, but this was the first time that I've ever felt like I was watching great film making since I've followed the show.
-
I don't think Xavier Nady, John Olerud or Jim Abbot played in the minors.
-
I can't understand why they would want to replace Dunn with a worse RH hitter. It makes absolutely no sense. Dunn still hits a lot of home runs. You can't win at the Cell without hitting a bunch of homers.

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 11:40 PM) I think Konerko is perfectly capable of hitting MLB pitching through at least the end of the 2014 season. Assuming Dunn doesn't get moved, Konerko would be a great signing for the right amount of money. That's a nice bat to have as insurance in case Dunn falls into one of his patented "doesn't belong anywhere near the game of baseball" stretches over the course of the season. Omar Vizquel was signed for a similar role and ended up being a nice antidote for the Mark Teahen signing in 2010. Konerko hasn't been perfectly capable of hitting MLB pitching since the first half the 2012 season.
-
Nobody actually goes to the park to see Paul Konerko, do they?
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 11:50 PM) Yes. But he is also just a bad analyst. He's comically biased too. "Never forget!"

Law was a part of the Jays during the Sirotka deal, right?
