QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 02:45 PM) Im not taking it personally, I just get tired of ad hominen statements/arguments. Present a good argument for why Xboxone is better than PS4, maybe people will take it seriously. Like I quoted, the PS4 is arguably the more powerful machine, so the argument is just perplexing. I stated why I think the Xbox is better for me and why I'm interested in it. I'm not going to try to convince anyone else. To me, it's more if a discussion than an argument.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 02:06 PM) Nope. I don't want to talk to my game/TV. I can take the extra .25 seconds to hit a button on my controller. And I realize the technology will get better, but the original Kinect didn't work very well. If it was 100% accurate all the time when you said something like "xbox on" or "play HBO," MAYBE i'd use it. But it's not that accurate and it becomes more of a pain in the ass than it's worth. That, and I don't feel like paying 100 bucks for it. That's great if Microsoft wants to push this voice activation stuff. Just don't force me to pay for it. The fact is Kinect is a marketing gimmick and I really wish people could see that. Get your teen girls and your old people to buy in and it's a business success but it doesn't advance the gaming experience for real gamers. Just like motion controls. Name me a "best game of the year" candidate that successfully integrated either technology to make a significant improvement in the game. The best example of motion control was the latest Zelda game and that was fun for all of 30 minutes. For Kinect, what, Dance Dance Revolution? Why wasn't there a game of the year that implemented technology that was being developed at the same time the game was being developed? You don't need me to really answer that, right? You know how long it takes to make a good game, right? Last year's game of the year took about 4 years to make.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) I don't blame them for making Windows 8 and moving toward a touch interface...I do, however, blame them for prematurely trying to convert people that weren't using touch based devices. It was a terrible implementation for non touch, and all they had to do was give users the simple option of defaulting to a start bar to rectify it. There is nothing to defend here. I definitely agree that implementation was bad and the lack of education was worse. Ive actually avoided buying a new laptop because of 8. I'm not going to pay a premium for a touchscreen and some of the programs I use don't play nice with the OS just yet. When the price comes down on the hybrids I'll jump in.
-
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 12:12 PM) Apple did this hybrid OS mind meld before Microsoft did it, but Apple didn't force you to use their new interface called Launchpad (which is more suitable to touch/looks like an iOS launcher/desktop), where Microsoft did exactly that. I think a lot more people would have noticed if OSX suddenly defaulted to Launchpad instead of their standard UI. And it would have been equally annoying. Microsoft realizes they've messed up on older desktops/non-touch, which is why in Windows 8.1, the start bar returns. Please tell me you haven't defended Apple forever and now complaining about Microsoft forcing you to do something their way. They have to push Windows 8 on non touch to gain more market share as they try to expand 1 OS for all devices.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) I dunno that it's creepy, I just think it's incredibly stupid and useless for gaming. You don't think voice activation would useful? How about voice or gesture activation for pulling up a HUD in a first person shooter? Switching through maps? Pulling up apps without going through several menus? You don't even know what it's capable of, but you're saying its not useful? Ok.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) And nobody is even talking about how creepy the Kinect sensor is. I don't want a Kinect. I'm not going to play Kinect games, I don't want it noticing me when I walk into the room, I don't want to pay $100 extra to have it come standard with the system. Seriously? Jesus.
-
You never had to be connected 100% of the time. Why are you guys taking this so personally? Badger, I was joking about your $400 blu ray. My god, man.
-
Adding a $400 blu ray player to your array of dated toys is definitely a wise investment. But I have Smart TV!!!

I thought it was interesting insight to what they were thinking. With the PS4, you're basically buying a new console for no good reason. The hardware isn't good enough to make a dramatic difference in gaming experiences. I'm sure most companies with a 90% market share wouldn't consider themselves to be "fighting for their lives." I'm actually surprised Microsoft shifted because the XBox division has never been all that profitable.

What's the percentage of people tha don't have access to high speed Internet? Access, not affordability. As far as checking in, it's a small amount of data, so you can tether to your phone to check in. If you don't have the ability to tether or have high speed Internet, the system is not for you. Such is life. All games you buy go into your account which is in the network. You always have access to them and so do your friends, if they're on your family list. Sure, a physical copy is nice to have, but not a necessity.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 10:58 AM) Record to 6 track to tape to cd. In each of those cases they were replaced by another item that I could physically buy. I dont buy music from itunes. I still buy cds of albums I really want. I want to know I have the physical media, even if it costs me a few extra dollars. You're such a small demographic that you don't matter. Sorry. Best Buy is struggling. Record stores barely exist. A company trying to drive innovation can't worry about people that refuse to change.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 10:51 AM) does not compute, wouldnt a SSD eventually replace your normal HD? Why would you want 2 types of HD and no type of optical drive? This now just seems to be an argument into absurdity to try and justify the fact that you called a Steam system (available in 2003) the future, when in fact its old tech that most gamers are seriously on the fence about even after 10 years of use. Maybe you just dont play a lot of computer games and thus arent well versed in Steam like systems, I dont know, but I personally would not buy a system/computer without an optical drive. Seriously? Having 2 drives is becoming the norm. You run applications from the SSD and use the SATA for storage. Any disc based storage system is quickly becoming dated. Of those people that don't have the Internet...how many can't tether to connect once a day? Of those people, how many can even afford a $500 console. It's a demographic that doesn't exist. Mercedes doesn't make a s***ty version of their cars for people that can't afford them either.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 10:37 AM) You need to install a program that is only available on disc? I buy physical copies of all my computer programs. Unless steam is considerably cheaper, I always just go to the store and buy the game, install it and then have the disk if anything goes wrong. Steam has been around since 2003, Ive had many steam games (its exactly the future system you are referring to), I just prefer to have the physical game and run it from my own computer. In fact one of my favorite games (Civilization) was kind of screwed up when it went to Steam, because Steam regulates the amount of modding, thus it was more difficult for 3rd parties to create new scenarios/etc because it was all regulated by Steam. Let me ask you a better question: Outside of cost, why would you not want an optical drive or to actually have the physical media? Why would you want someone else to have complete control over something you paid your own money for? (edit) Buerhle, I didnt realize that. All of the Civ modders were complaining about how Civ going to steam ruined it. I dont program or mod, so I just took what they said as true. And yeah, even Steam allows you to play your game offline. But that is because you dl the entire thing. Why wouldn't I want a drive? It's taking up valuable space that I can use for an SSD that would actually be used everyday and make my computer run incredibly better.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 10:39 AM) 75 million Xbox 360s 46 million XBL users How many of those consoles are still in use? There's no way of knowing. That's taking into account every machine that's collecting dust, or broken.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 10:20 AM) While Taylorst and Capn can insult everyone in the thread, it just does not make logical sense what they are arguing from a consumer perspective. Most reasonable people agree that choice is better than no choice. So why would anyone want to have no choice to buy a physical game and instead have to rely on a steam like system. And even though I have a steam account, I prefer to buy the games in the store and have the physical media. That way I dont have to worry about steam not working, steam screwing up or steam going out of business and not having access to the game. So yeah, there are plenty of great reasons why I would actually want to have something tangible in my possession. And if Xbox wants to make systems with no optical drive, all online, what is stopping them? Its not impossible. So you can go buy that if you want. Ill keep buying my computers with optical drives, on the off chance I might need one. Because it doesnt slow my computers performance, it doesnt make my computer all of a sudden go from good to bad, so I have no idea why it would at all impact the Xbox performance. I guess Steam has been around so long I didnt realize that was any sort of future. I thought the gaming industry realized that while some people may be okay with a steam like platform it wasnt for everyone. Saving $5-$10 per game isnt worth not having my own disk to put under my pillow at night, especially as an optical drive does other things like play dvd, blue ray, etc, so I would still rather my next generation machine could do that. Call me old fashioned though. Why would you ever need an optical drive on a computer? Boot disk in a pinch maybe?

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) About 40% of the Xboxes in the world are not connected to an XBL account. That's a pretty big chunk of their customer base to alienate. I definitely call BS on that. There's absolutely no way that that's true. Even if it were, how many of those people don't have the capability to connect to the internet? 5%, at the very most.

QUOTE (Capn12 @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 09:34 AM) These aren't 'next gen' consoles, they're just Xbox 360.2 and PS3.2 now. I have no idea why people want to rail MS for the connect every 24 hours thing and the games 'in the cloud' components. That IS what makes the console 'next generation'...the fact that physical media was being phased out, playability from anywhere you can log into XBL.... But no, idiots hear 'DRM' and go bats*** crazy, or just jump on the bandwagon. Oh hey, Sony fanboys, you DO remember that Sony was the lynchpin behind rootkits in your music, years ago, right? And by all accounts from what we've heard, the PS4 AND the XB1 were both supposed to go the way of 'cloud/digital media', but something made Sony back down late in the game, or they saw the flak that MS was getting about it. Something happened there in the 11th hour. Sony doesn't have the network to phase out physical media. To put thing's in perspective, when's the last time you used the optical drive of your computer? A lot of people are just taking the drive out all together. They're no longer needed. Microsoft intended to drive retail down on new games. No more pre-orders for games. No need to head out to the store to buy them. No need to take them over to a friend's house. Everything would have been in your account. Everything from the games you play, to the music you buy, to the TV and movies you watch would have all been through the Xbox network. People really are stupid and fear change.
-
Really stupid move from Microsoft. It's a shame that apparently the majority of gamers seem to be short sighted idiots. "Used games. Derp!" In fairness to those morons, Microsoft couldn't market water in the desert. Now the next generation of consoles won't be much different than this generation. Hardware can only take you so far when you're pushing it to a 55" "Smart TV." Really, Sony and Microsoft are duping everyone by making you buy a console that barely outperforms your old console. "But, but DDR5!" For those few without Internet connections, it would have taken seconds and its called, "tethering."

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 17, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) I'd have to imagine you have very few "friends". I'd never screw over someone I consider my friend who's already giving me a deal. And then brag about it on the Internet, as if being a s***ty person is impressive.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 17, 2013 -> 10:43 AM) We get it dude, you are real pissed everyone is making fun of you for loving the Xbox. You can kindly get off my nuts now. How old are you?

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 17, 2013 -> 08:45 AM) TL;DR Version: He ripped off his friend some guy, but insists on calling that guy his friend. You aren't his friend. Friends don't knowingly rip each other off. If it's just me that felt this way after reading this, fine...I'm a dick. Wouldn't have it any other way. It's not just you. He's bragging about getting over on his "friend."

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jun 15, 2013 -> 06:32 AM) Anybody remember when I always blasted alexei for his lazy, fancy and stupid baseball? When I was blasted for it , and given the he should have won the gold glove story by the stat lovers here? Time proved me right....... You've been proven right? Gtfo. He's been the best SS in the AL for years and he's still among the best. That's like saying you predicted PK would be a s***ty hitter and you think you've been right because he sucks this year. That was such a stupid post that its kind of blowing my mind. Lots of players are called brain dead. Most of them are short stops. You know why? They have a lot more to think about than any other player on the field. They have to make more snap judgements. Sometimes they make stupid plays. There's no doubt that he's kind of a dumb baseball player, but he's more than earned his salary throughout his career.
