  1. Just wanted to lol at the Royals for having 2 first round draft choices in the bullpen.
  2. QUOTE (Cali @ May 2, 2013 -> 11:16 PM) What memories are those? '08? Haha. He didn't really have any stand out games that I can remember in his Sox tenure. Just a lot of frustration followed by intermittent stretches of dominance, followed immediately by more frustration haha Yeah, it's called pitching. Not everyone can be lights out.
  3. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:48 PM) that's sad... i really actually liked Gavin. For once, we agree. I always liked him a lot too. Hopefully he can recover and we'll give him a shot at the minimum. Man, that sucks.
  4. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 2, 2013 -> 11:04 PM) Hector as a starter: 5 Games started - 24.2 innings, 5 ER, 13 BBs, 13 hits and 32 Ks. That comes out to 1.82 ERA, .813 WHIP, 2.462 K/BB and 11.68 K/9. He obviously can't keep up the k/rate and will get hit harder, so he needs to throw more strikes. I haven't seen enough of him this year to know if he's just effectively wild and hasn't been figured out yet, or if he's just getting better.
  5. I couldn't have written the script better. Flowers wins the game. Young Sox pitcher comes through. AJ gets clowned in the 9th. Reed looks so much better when he's not trying to light up the radar gun. Even when he reaches back, he's way more nasty at 93. He has a ton more movement than he does at 96. That change was nasty tonight. Crain looks like he's going through one of his dead arm periods. There was no tilt on his curve x2 tonight. That's nothing new to him though. He goes through way more than most pitchers.
  6. The best thing about this thread is that you guys are basically arguing with nobody. It's like a case study classic intrawebz arguments. Nobody has said AJP wasn't a hard playing, smart, durable ball player. I just didn't like the guy because he's a bat flipping, pop upping, temper tantrum throwing, s*** talking, cheap shot giving, Affliction shirt wearing, vodka shot drinking, WWF watching, douche who throws like a girl. That doesn't mean I didn't appreciate him. Though putting him in the same paragraph as Fisk and MB is kind if insulting, but I get it.
  7. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 2, 2013 -> 05:59 PM) When did he ever do that? If you are referring to the Barrett incident, let me refresh your memory. Barrett was blocking the plate. AJ bowled him over with a clean hit on a clean play - no cheap shot. Barrett got up and sucker punched AJ in the jaw. AJ took Barrett's best shot and hardly flinched. Both benches cleared but AJ wisely did not retaliate. For one Barret's punch didn't even phase him, and for two the Sox were in a pennant race and couldn't afford to lose AJ to a long suspension. Even though AJ did absolutely nothing wrong he still got a one game suspension. Of course Cubs fans were happy and rumour has it someone in the Sox front office "lost respect for AJ" for not being stupid enough to retaliate. That's an example of some people not appreciating AJ. You really need to lighten up.
  8. QUOTE (flavum @ May 2, 2013 -> 03:42 PM) AJ is in the lineup tonight. At least we know that if there's a brawl, AJ won't fight back. He'll start it and run.
  9. So it is possible for me to dislike AJ and still appreciate his contributions to the Sox? Glad we got that cleared up. I've disliked several Sox players throughout the years, but only refused to root for one, Wil Cordero.
  10. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:45 PM) Without AJ we're down 0-2 to the Angels going back to SoCal in the ALCS. Without AJ our pitchers may not have thrown almost 5 complete games in a row. sit down. Only AJ would have been smart enough to make the fundamental play we were all taught in little league.
  11. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:35 PM) Uribe, Everett, AJ, Rowand, Contreras, El Duque... these were the heart and soul of a winning baseball team. These players were winners, brought a championship to this miserable city and there are a great many "Sox fans" who ridiculed these players and were happy when they left. Yes, they were. Outside of Everett, they were all really nice guys too. Even Everett was said to be a great teammate while on the Sox. I don't think they were plunked after leaving. That should tell you something. It'd be pretty lol if Reed wasn't even trying to hit him.
  12. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:22 PM) Sox wouldn't have even made the playoffs with Jamie Burke or Ben Davis along with Widger as their catchers. Uribe/Crede>2005 AJ It's a dumb argument anyway. AJ's teammates didn't like him. Retaliation was due from last night. Shut up and take your base, AJ.
  13. If people are going to choose the name over the jersey, can they at least do it for somebody who was really good?
  14. I was always open about disliking AJ.
  15. I'm just going to guess that Sale was around 92-94 and much more effective than early in the game when he was 96.
  16. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 1, 2013 -> 10:03 PM) This is going to need its own thread. Meatheads enjoyed it for what reason? He's an asshole, hot head and bully? I'd bet good money no more than 5 White Sox actually liked the guy.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 1, 2013 -> 04:36 PM) I don't think he got figured out, I think he lost any consistent release point and that's murdered his control. Winner. He's got too good of stuff to get figured out. He can't throw strikes right now and isn't being given the opportunity to find that release point. He needs to face both LH and RH batters to become more consistent.
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) Perhaps the way to compare them is command within the strikezone versus command of an at bat. I watched both pitch extensively, but in their advanced age. The numbers indicate that they stuck to a lot of the same principles that got them 300+ wins. Just by looking at the numbers (and what I heard/noticed while watching) is that Glavine primarily stuck with going outside, outside, outside. It was a rare day when he'd come in on you. Meanwhile, Maddux just had absolutely pristine command within the zone and could throw any pitch at any time for a strike, and they moved too much to be able to touch them. That, and they both got pitches 4-6 inches off the plate prior to QuestTec. I still don't think comparing Axelrod to an older Maddux is a bad comparison. I don't think it's that bad of a comparison either. I was addressing the idea that Maddux thrived with average stuff, command and moxie, which just isn't true IMO. A stat I'd love to see is swinging k's in 2 strike counts. That would be an excellent way to show how good a pitchers stuff really is.
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) I think he was referencing old Greg Maddux - the one, who, from 2002 to 2008, had a K/9 above 5.4 just once. Beyond that, Maddux wasn't proficient about striking people out. In the prime of his career, from ages 25 through 32, he struck out 7 batters per 9, but he was never really much above 6 an inning. Maddux had the best command of any pitcher of his generation, and he was one of the best of all time. Getting calls 4-6 inches off the plate helps too. The fact that he threw 5008 innings (13th all time) contributes just as much to that. I really don't think a late career Maddux is a bad comparison though. I guess it's pretty subjective to how you define "stuff." Maddux had moderate velocity and movement on everything. That's having good stuff. Glavine didn't have good stuff, but excellent command.
  20. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 1, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) Please don't take this comparison the wrong way, but Axelrod is a pitcher in the sense that Greg Maddux was a pitcher. Not over-powering stuff, but he pitches with a lot of movement and deception. I think he's still got room to grow and improve. And he's shown some real grit on the mound. Dude's a competitor, and he may surprise us all. That's one of the biggest baseball myths I know. Maddux was nasty. Maddux was a Grienke better stuff. Maddux is 10th all time in k's.
  21. It only took 1 day for #TWTW to not be funny anymore. Way to ruin a funny thing.
  22. Even the idea of giving the government the power to make that distinction is scary. You're basically taking away common rights. Imagine if the government had the power to deem Malcolm X a terrorist because he was both openly anti-establishment and Muslim.
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 01:09 PM) Why do you feel domestic terrorists deserve the same rights as regular U.S. citizens? More importantly, why should we take the moral high road with known terrorists? This kid brutally murdered and mutilated dozens of people, destroying numerous people's lives in the process. He did so with the intent to create as much pain and suffering as possible for these innocent people. Why does he get your sympathy when he took none on his victims? How would you feel if you were left a cripple or lost a loved one? I'm guessing you'd be singing a different tune. The moral high ground is always easy from an outside perspective. I'm not for prison rape or torture or anything else you may refer to barbaric, but unfortunately prison is a dangerous place and bad things happen to inmates all the time. If something bad happens to poor little Dzohkar, I will feel no sympathy for him whatsoever. Pure evil doesn't deserve our sympathy. How do you differentiate between a "domestic terrorist" and a normal citizen? Where does it begin and end? Is a gangbanger a "domestic terrorist?"
  24. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 07:12 PM) Ticket sales wise at least the Sox benefit from when the Cubs are drawing 40,000 per because if you want to see a MLB game you have to buy a Sox ticket. I don't believe this at all. Can you prove it? The success of the Cubs has little to no effect on the Sox. The Sox won't lose fans to the Cubs. The Sox have a pretty good core of fans. Motivating them to come to the ballpark is the issue. Watching a boring team in cold weather isn't going to do it. The Sox need to worry about the Sox and figure out what it's going to take to get that core out to more games.
  25. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 20, 2013 -> 12:44 PM) Menard is a maximum security prison. A federal super max is much different.
