QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 6, 2012 -> 06:01 PM) We'll see. Remember when Jenks came up in 2005, he didn't know how to pitch yet either but his raw stuff carried the day. Same catcher as today. With AJ likely gone, we'll find out the affect he really had (or didn't) on this pitching staff in 2013, in all likelihood. Jenks had some of the best stuff I've ever seen. 100+ FB, 2+Curves, +Slider, +Change and a Cutter. Dude was just flat out unfair. There are too many variables to determine how much of an effect a catcher has from one year to the next. I do know that his pitch calling was predictable and he didn't like to change eye levels enough. He also didn't call for enough pitches in the dirt with 2 strikes. I'm not going to speculate why, but I have a feeling of what it was.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 6, 2012 -> 05:52 PM) We're talking starters, though, at least I thought. Jones still has struggled against RHB'ers and while he pitched well in stretches, he also doesn't get nearly as many swings and misses on his fastball as one would expect. He throws a very "light" fastball. You watch lots of other guys throwing 97-100 MPH, they're totally dominant with the fastball alone. Jones can't get away without having a breaking pitch he can get over. Crain's lost something off his fastball from 3-5 years ago, probably due to overuse by the Twins. Jones doesn't get swings and misses on the fastball because he doesn't know how to pitch yet. He needs to elevate it more. AJ's pitch calling isn't helping either. Crain's lost some velocity, but his breaking stuff is nasty when he's on and he can throw it for strikes.
-
Jones, Crain and Veal have the best "stuff" on the team IMO. Obviously it's subjective though.

I'd change... AJ - B Thornton - B Crain - A Reed - B Floyd - C Konerko - C Santiago - B The only thing I know about coaches is that their roles are incredibly overrated.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 5, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) From a winning perspective, with money aside for a minute, is having Peavy and Floyd as your primary RH weapons enough to contend for a championship? Even if you ignore all injury risk, the fact remains that we are talking about 2 guys with diminished fastballs, both sitting around 91. Now I didn't watch Floyd's last few starts but I doubt he was up at 93-94 like old Floyd. Think about that AND THEN add injury risk. I just don't think 90-91 gets it done from the right side against good hitters. Do we need a stud from the right side for 2013? In a perfect world for me, Peavy returns as our 2nd best RH starter. I think they're the type of guys that can get you into the playoffs, but not win you a championship.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 4, 2012 -> 05:12 PM) That's the same thing people say about Dick Vitale. Vitale has done great things for college basketball, but people outgrow him. That doesn't mean he's still not bringing people into the game. I don't understand how so many Sox fans can hate Hawk Harrelson. He IS the White Sox as far as I'm concerned. I'm not the "throw my remote" kind of fan. I don't get too up or down based on one play or one game. Hawk doesn't really jive with me. It's compounded by his arrogance, cliches, refusal to adapt, senile, grumpy, rude etc. Driving yet another broadcaster out of town is the last straw for me. It's seriously to the point where I don't think I can listen to him anymore. I don't want to hear about the umps, the dreaded lead off walk, the your what hurts, the Frank Howard's, the stretch on routine flyballs etc. It's just time for a new era. He's getting bad enough that he's going to say something stupid enough to tarnish his legacy or piss the wrong person off. The awful stretch of baseball broke him. He's should remember that he has a job to do. He's lost perspective. White Sox baseball is a lot more to me than Hawk.

I'm all for rebuilding, but i think you wait until the deadline to move Floyd. His value should go up then, same with PK.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 4, 2012 -> 04:04 PM) His enthusiasm is great for younger viewers. Put your hate aside. This was probably true 20 years ago. Enthusiastic isn't what I'd call Hawk these days. Obnoxious is probably a better adjective.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 4, 2012 -> 03:40 PM) Hawk attracts more fans if anything. Based on? I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. I don't know any non-die hards that like him. He's the punchline of jokes. Most of the diehard fans I know are fed up with his act.
-
Why do people want Hawk to return if they don't like him? It's like staying married to a girl you can't stand for the kids, even though the kids graduated college. I grew up listening to Hawk too. I used to like him. At this point, he makes watching a broadcast a miserable experience. There's no way I'm going to subject myself to that for another year. But, what are the alternatives?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 3, 2012 -> 10:18 PM) I've been thinking more about this. I wonder if they had some sort of incident at some point? Some of you guys said one game they didn't speak the first two innings. You have to wonder if Hawk treated Stone lousy and Stone called him on it at some point. Have you never listened to them? It's been obvious for a long, long time that Stone has no respect for Hawk. Stone's not stupid. He knows Hawk's nothing but a muppet. You can just tell he's biting his lip every time Hawk says something ridiculous. Compound that with Hawk being flat out rude and it's easy to see why Stone's leaving. It's a shame. Stone's good and Hawk's a sham. I'd love for the Sox to do something like ESPN and HBO are doing with boxing. They have 1 pro pbp guy, 1 throwback old school pro and 1 young, new age kind of guy. I'd love to have a traditionalist accompanied by a SABR guy. It'd make for great conversation throughout the game. All of us would learn about baseball philosophy and probably come to respect the different factions of it.

In Dunn's defense, I've never seen a player robbed of more line drives due to the shift.

This scenario has less chance of happening than one of Ozzie's kids making a major league roster. Off season stupidity has started early.

Hawk and Stone, most biased announcers

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 25, 2012 -> 10:49 AM) I think if Hawk had been broadcasting the WS, he would have had a stroke on that last play. Either that, or he would have just started yelling, "f***, yes!" and "Holy s***!" The radio broadcast was good. John Rooney's voice cracked as he yelled, "Out! Out! A White Sox winner and a world championship!" Does anybody have an mp3 of Rooney's call? -
That was relieving. Hopefully that win gives us some momentum.

QUOTE (MAX @ Sep 23, 2012 -> 08:21 PM) Actually, Albuquerque is a Spanish surname, so it is a plausible name. Don't ruin my fun!

Does anybody want to guess what Al Alburquerque's real name is and why he's hiding his true identity? There's no way a guy from DR's name is Al Alburquerque.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 23, 2012 -> 04:45 PM) Players follow the money. Just like the guy playing RF for the Angels today, right?

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Sep 23, 2012 -> 04:37 PM) That pretty much describes every team in Chicago besides the Cubs and the 2010 Blackhawks It's the reality of being the second team in the second city. In reality, we're a mid market team with mid market results. We don't draft in the top 10 often. FA's don't want to come here to play for the second team in the second city, and never have. Hey, at least we're not the Brewers!

The ball's not carrying at all through that smog ridden air. There are few things I hate more than California.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Sep 23, 2012 -> 03:13 PM) What's hilarious is if Rios WOULD have struck out earlier in his at bat it would've been a passed ball and the Sox WOULD have scored. Instead he fouled it off and then struck out. Unreal. How would it have been a passed ball? The catcher would have caught it if Rios didn't get a piece. lol

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 23, 2012 -> 03:10 PM) Actually he only said 'that ball hit hard!' 'right in front of the fence' He did the "That ball hit deep!" home run call. He's in rare form today. He's got the crying, anger and bully thing all going at once.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 08:56 PM) Let's be honest, a healthy Verlander, Scherzer and Fister is a great front 3 for a playoff team. We have Sale pitching courageously on fumes, Peavy on fumes, Quintana on fumes, Liriano and Floyd inconsistent/erratic...you could make an argument with the flashes he has shown that Hector Santiago, even though he's not even in the rotation, could be our 2nd best starter at this point. Sale isn't pitching on fumes. You and fathom take all the fun out of game threads. You're in China. Go and have some fun and get laid dude. Jesus.
