QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 01:41 PM) No other team in US sports has those opportunities. Do you honestly think if the Braves had the Yankees resources, that the Yankees would still have 27 World Titles? Do you honestly think if the Yankees were in Pittsburgh, they would be doing what they have done? Combine the teams with next highest payrolls, their total WS titles don't match the Yankees. Face it, the Yankees are what all other teams aspire to be.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) The Mets aren't in the conversation because they don't generations of fans the way the Yankees do. They came about in the 60's. Even when the Yankees were a "joke" they were still the highest revenue and most valuable team in all of baseball. On their worst day they have more opportunity than any other major league franchise on its best day. Those opportunities mean everything. True, and they've capitalized on those opportunities better than any other team in all of sports. 27.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 12:15 PM) No one else has the economic advantages of being the original New York City team. The Cardinals are a joke to have listed when you think about where St Louis is at both in terms of population and wealth. The Red Sox are the closest to the Yankees, because they are an original team, and they have the Boston market to themselves. The Cubs and Dodgers are sharing much smaller markets. The truth is in the payrolls. The Cardinals own a significant part of the South and Midwest. I'd be willing to bet there are far more Cardinals fans in Illinois than White Sox.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:57 AM) The Rangers also play in a market a fraction of the size of NYC, and have revenues to match. The perfect example of the differences between Texas and NY? The ARod trade. For my two cents, Atlanta would be the best organization in baseball. They have the best combination of production with limited resources of anyone in baseball. They are there every single year, despite not having $200 million to blow on payroll, or even $100 million. They have got 14 division titles, and 5 world series trips since 1990. Over the same span, the yankees have 13 division titles and 7 world series trips, despite spending something like $2 billion more in payroll alone. You're dismissing the significance of the number 27. The Cardinals, Cubs, Red Sox and Dodgers also have enormous fan bases and potentially unlimited resources. Their accomplishments aren't even in the same stratosphere.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:45 AM) It takes money to compete in baseball. They can afford to make gigantic mistakes that no one else in baseball can. Being able to outspend your stupidity isn't admirable, it is Donald Trump. They've been able to channel their advantages to the tune of 27 world championships. 27! Somebody mentioned the Rangers earlier. They'd have to win every WS til 2025 to be in the discussion. I've heard of the Rangers before. They used to be called the Broncos.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:40 AM) It has nothing to do with the product. It has everything to do with being the original New York City team, in the biggest market in the USA. That's a cop out, bulls*** excuse. Compare the Yankees to the Cubs. The Yankees win, sell tickets, sell merchandise and dominate on a global level. I root for the underdog too. That doesn't mean I have to bury my head in the sand.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:39 AM) This is like saying Microsoft is the best technology company out there because they have the highest market cap. There's a discussion here and you're missing out.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:20 AM) They are actually run quite poorly. If they only had $100M to work with they'd be screwed. Just look at how many free agent signings have completely blown up on them You play the hand you're dealt. 27 world championships don't lie. If you want to have a discussion sans the Yankees, it's easily the Cardinals. Winning the whole damn thing is the end game, nothing else. You guys can pimp your prospect lists and organizations that overcome adversity, but the Yankees compete every year and have won more than anyone, period.

QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 11:11 AM) Replace Yankees with Rangers, and you've got it. 27 world championships Most recognizable team in all of sports. Packed house every night. Off the charts merchandise sales. Their own TV network. Come on. They're the best organization in all of American sports and it's not even close.
-
The Yankees, and it's not even close.

It would be interesting to the the success rate of other GM's. Then, we'd have to take into account draft position. I suspect the "Kenny can't do anything right besides for continually lucking into great staffs who happen to pitch in a bandbox" crowd would be disappointed.
-
Considering KW's draft allotment, having 11 make the show isn't bad, especially considering only 1 was a top 10 pick. Next...

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 09:26 PM) Uh, this is what a Top 20 list of K-Dub's offensive draft picks from 2001 to 2009 might look like (and no, he did not draft Michael Morse). Chris Young Gordon Beckham Brent Morel Jeremy Reed Brian Anderson Ryan Sweeney Chris Getz Chris Carter Aaron Cunningham Josh Fields Donny Lucy Brandon Allen Clinton King Robert Valido Jon Zeringue Jay Mattox Tyler Reves John Shelby Jared Mitchell Josh Phegley Trayce Thompson I've never heard of some of those guys - I mostly just included players who were drafted in the first 5 rounds. This is probably the worst offensive run of any GM in baseball, correct? Like I said before, he's getting by on payroll. Anybody can bring in a Dunn, Thome, Dye, Rios, etc if they have the financial backing. You seem like a pretty intelligent guy - it's shocking to me that you don't understand this. I counted 11 that made the show. Not bad. Not bad at all.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 07:21 PM) You just called headiness a excuse for a bad player. AJ is about the headiest player in baseball. Uh, there's a discussion here and you're missing out.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 07:03 PM) AJ is a bad player? When did this thread become about AJ?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 06:53 PM) He's an average baserunner. Wouldn't call him good, he's somewhere in between. He's made quite a few mistakes on the basepaths the last couple of seasons. AJ and Jose Valentin, for example, are/were much better, despite their lack of speed. I'm not sure where this "headiness" thing comes from. It's an excuse for a bad player. You see it used all the tine in basketball for s***ty, white players, especially PG's.
-
QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 06:15 PM) Beckham has been my favorite player since he came up, he just carries a lot of swagger in his game and whoever said he is an awful baserunner is well... we'll just say misinformed. Just because he doesn't swipe bags doesn't mean he isn't one of the smartest players on the paths lol. He just got rushed honestly, and I don't know if the bat will ever come around again. Seriously? He makes Lillibridge look like a good baserunner. I don't care how much swagger a guy has if he can't get the ball out of the IF. Admittedly, I'm biased. I've met him and let's just say I don't really jive with the backwards hat, Affliction shirt wearing crew.
-
Remember when we had the CF version of Beckham and everyone hated him? Isn't he pitching in the International League now? There's still hope.
-
You guys will probably continue to believe til he's 30. Has a kid ever had more rope and excuses? Nice glove, awful baserunner and worse bat. You might as well hang on to him. He won't get more than a High 5 in arbitration.
-
QUOTE (Special K @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 05:37 PM) I think KW is a decent GM, but that's pretty brutal if that's who Kenny is hanging is hat on offensively. BTW, did he draft Rowand? Speaking of which, KW has also been a phenomenal GM at selling high on players. The only player that truly hurts that I can think of that KW let get away is Gio Gonzalez. Don't forget that season and a half of CY Hudson and that kid who hasn't had any success above A ball.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 12:36 PM) Jerry talked tough to Mark saying he wasn't worth that kind of money at this stage of his career? I wonder what Jerry thought of Rios' deal and Dunn's deal last year. Not many players are "worth" the exact dollar figures they get. It's all relative. The Rios and Dunn contracts are fair market value if they perform to their career standards. MB's contract is awful. At Mark's best, he's not worth $19M. Those last 2 years are Soriano bad.

The Sox would be foolish to shuffle their line up for Beckham. He doesn't have the upside to justify that move. Sox fans need to face reality. Beckham pretty much sucks.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 07:13 PM) A.J. swung just fine last night... I heard he pulled it closing down The Continental.

If he can't swing, DL him. At least Flowers is better behind the plate.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 08:52 AM) My pup (7 months old) came down with something yesterday. He has diarrhea and can't keep food down. Our vets office is closed on Sundays and I don't think this is something that requires a trip to the emergency vet (he's in fine spirits otherwise and we're making him drink water to avoid dehydration). Reading on the internets, I see boiled chicken and rice consistently recommended as a good food for dogs with upset stomachs. Any thoughts on that? As usual, I'll hang up and listen. Parvo has a very unique smell. Obviously, the diarrhea will smell bad, but there's also a battery/iron type of smell associated with it. If there's no muccus or blood in the stool, I'd wait it out. Make sure he stays hydrated.
