QUOTE(qwerty @ Sep 22, 2005 -> 04:32 PM) At this point i would put him in the bottom third of the league. But we do have to sacrafice something, in this case it is defense for offense. Three million is what he will get on the high side per year... we have to remember he will be 35 before the start of next season. Having a good IF defense is invaluable for a team that's not built on K pitchers. We have some damn good starters but 3 of them really rely on a strong IF. The positions that I would look to upgrade, offensively, are DH, CF and LF. In actuality, both Crede and Uribe have been more productive than Rowand, hitting in the 8th and 9th spots. If Pods can't run, he doesn't have much value to us. Of course, we'll still be looking for a lead off hitter. The bottom of the order hasn't hurt us nearly as much as some would like to think. The 3-seven (broken seven key) hitters haven't produced enough. The only time somebody's carried us for more than a few days was Konerko's August. If we have money to spend, I'd look to possibly sign PK to an extension (which I've been opposed to for a long time, but with this market, we're in a bind) and work a trade for Delgado. That shores up the DH position and Delgado could produce enough at the Cell to make up for the lack of production from Rowand. Or, we could add Pierre to that and move him to CF. Then, we could get rid of both Rowand and Pods while still having a lead off bat. disclaimer: that post was insane

how we learned to stop worrying and love fathom
TaylorStSox replied to Chifananthony's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I love this thread. It's full of people trying to out do each other. "We suck because of this." ..."No, we suck because of that." lol "We suck so bad that we aren't going anywhere." ........ "No, we suck so bad that we will never go anywhere." It's quite entertaining. -

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 9, 2005 -> 04:10 PM) It also means that Pk won't see anything to hit....... And AJ batting 3rd?? Please. Jesus christ!!! 846 posts in a month. That's unreal.

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 11:07 PM) you know what i used to really hate Torri Hunter (because of some of his comments and stuff) but i have really grown to respect him. Did anyone read that article about his dad in Sports Weekly. his dad is a Crack addict and the article was very powerful. Also if he was on the Sox he would be a fan favorite. i really respect how he plays the game. Agreed. Hunter's the kind of guy you'd love to have on your team. We've seen it time and again as an opponent. It's too bad for him. I'd like to see the Twins make the playoff's. That way we could wipe the floor with their asses on national TV and show the world that we've become everything they were, but better.

Judging a hitter solely with .OBP is idiotic. This is especially true when the hitter's a free swinger. Is Uribe producing like we expected him to? No. However, he's still more productive than alot of hitters on our team. His RBI's are comparable to Dye and Konerko's, out of the 9 hole. Now, what is the goal of all hitters? To create OR drive in runs. Uribe has excelled at one. If you consider the OBP of the guys that hit ahead of him, his RBI's are almost remarkable. AJ and Crede are both free swingers as well. AJ walks about as much as a horse with a broken leg. Therefore, Uribe's had fewer RBI oppurtunities than most 9 hitters. He leads the team in sacrifice fly's and is second IIRC in sacrifice bunts. That's productivity. Re: Uribe's defense... If you think Uribe is a s***ty fielder, then you don't know s*** about baseball. Give me all the stats you want. I'll tell you how f***ing meaningless they are. Do you even watch the games Mr. Hibbard? Anyone who uses defensive stats is worse than a FOBB. You have to judge defensive ability with your own eyes, not some home made statistic that BA thinks is adequate. Zone rating my ass. Uribe's the best defensive SS we've had since Guillen. He's got excellent range to the hole and adequate range up the middle. The positioning of our MIF is suspect at times, but that's a result of coaching. He's got an excellent arm and has saved 2 games this year, with that arm, in the late innings. Can we upgrade? Of course. We always should be looking to. Honestly, I'd like to see upgrades in alot of areas. Rowand leaves alot to be desired. However, he's good enough that it's not an immediate concern, just like Uribe.

Thomas wouldn't mind ending career with Sox
TaylorStSox replied to greasywheels121's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I wouldn't be surprised if JR did something similar to the Jordan contract. JR overpaid Jordan in his last year as a show of respect. As cheap as JR is, he's fiercely loyal to his guys. Frank is definitely one of his guys. Don't forget, The Sox are due to make a big profit this year. JR does have a history of awarding profit with an increase in salary. 10 years ago, the park was packed and we were winning. We were amongst the leaders in payroll. -

QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 02:06 PM) Milkman, if a bad start to a year made a pitcher's career "over", where would the MLB be today? LMAO. A bad start doesn't make a career end. That's illogical. Shoulder problems, an inability to throw your breaking ball for strikes and a big drop in velocity does.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 12:08 PM) With his numbers, he definately deserves to get in. I don't know if he'll be first ballot, but no question, he was one of the best power hitters of his era. If Puckett makes it, then Belle should make it. They both had to leave the game early for health reasons unrelated to baseball. Belle was a better player (hitter at least).

QUOTE(THOMAS_KONERKO_BACK2BACK @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 05:23 PM) There is no way we should even consider trading him or ever leting him go until he retires. He is the reason many fans have stuck with the White Sox. He won 2 MVPS in the early nineties and led this team to success. He is headed to the HAll of FAme and jut to make noi doubt he is gonna reach 500 home runs while hes at it. HE is sitting at 440 right now. He is still an elite hitter. Right now he is 7 for 21 batting .333 and has 4 homeruns already. He needs to stay a white sock. ON the other hand we do not need to get rid of carl everrett either. I think he has realized that he isnt gonna play every day. ITs late in his careeer but still is a very good hitter. We need a good bat off the bench and he is it. I think he wants to stay here and realizes the potential this team has. KEEP THEM BOTH THERES PLENTY OF ROOM IN CHICAGO FOR BOTH OF THEM!!! Agreed. BTW... The singular of White Sox is White Sox. A "White Sock" is something you wear on your feet.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 15, 2005 -> 11:28 AM) I agree with the post that mentioned the next start after leaving COL is the toughest. Garcia, Contreras, & El Duque have all looked tired in their starts since. I think they will bounce back in their next start. I would like to make 3 moves: - trade for Huff to platoon with Koney at 1B. Koney 05: VS. LEFT: .185 / .769 VS. RIGHT: .266 / .863 HOME: .232 / .782 AWAY: .258 / .884 Huff 05: VS. LEFT: .269 / .707 VS. RIGHT: .252 / .703 HOME: .284 / .796 AWAY: .235 / .620 Huff is earning $5M w Tam & not likely to be w them in 06. His trade value is bargain basement right now. Not worthy of BMac or Anderson. He amounts to being a salary dump for the DR's. He might be exactly what the White Sox need. His SLG numbers are sure to rise hitting in Koney's spot in the White Sox lineup. It's impossible for them not to if he continues to hit .269 vs LH. It's a night & day difference between the guys hitting in front of him in Tam & what he'll have with the White Sox. With Gload not expected to return until Aug the need is greater now. Timo sucks. - trade for Guardado. EG 05: VS. LEFT: .240 / .760 VS. RIGHT: .153 / .453 HOME: .192 / .640 AWAY: .156 / .388 Cliff Politte is the only arm in our pen that has better #'s vs LH this year. We are weak vs LH in the pen. This move shores up that weakness, furthers our dominance vs RH in the pen, & opens the door to trading Marte to shore up 3B. - trade for Mueller. Crede 05: VS. LEFT: .279 / .777 VS. RIGHT: .224 / .700 HOME: .165 / .607 AWAY: .291 / .807 Muellr 05: VS. LEFT: .318 / .900 VS. RIGHT: .266 / .729 HOME: .337 / .896 AWAY: .230 / .665 Not much needs to be said here. If you can get Mueller for the price of Marte & a mid-tier ml arm it's a no-brainer. Boston has no need for Crede so he likely would become a bench player. Post-trade: Bench: Widger, Everett, Huff, Crede, Harris Crede provides that RH bat off the bench the team needs, Everett & Huff provide good options vs LHP. With Crede on the bench Harris means more to the White Sox then Ozuna. Ozuna is a better hitter but Harris a better runner. With this bench you can use Harris as a PR for either Koney or AJ in a game & then replace him with Huff or Widger. The same can be said for Mueller. These trades will improve the offense but make the team slower. Harris's value rises under that scenario. Bullpn: Guardado, Hermy, Politte, Cotts, Shingo, Viz vs LH: Politte (541 OPSv), Cotts (643 OPSv), Guardado (760 OPSv) vs RH:Cotts (317 OPSv), Politte (377 OPSv), Hermy (397 OPSv), Guardado (453 OPSv), Viz (618 OPSv) Here's the problem I have with this. The whole idea of platooning everyday players based on splits is wrong. Guys need consistant AB's to succeed. This is especially true with a guy like PK. PK's an extremely high maintenance hitter. Everything has to be perfect for him. He's not a guy like Vlad, Soriano, or to a lesser extent Uribe. They can all guess wrong on a pitch, adjust, and still smash it. PK has to know the pitch. He has to be in a groove. His swing has to be perfect. He can't make quick adjustments. This is why he goes into prolonged slumps when he's off. Also, you can give me all the numbers you want. PK is uncomfortable in the box against alot of LH pitching. I see it with my own eyes.

Sorry fantasy GM's, Sox not ready to deal
TaylorStSox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 12:48 PM) I think everyone wouldnt mind cruddy if he was a bit more consistant. When he bats great for two weeks, then goes into a month or more long slump where he hits under 200, then hits good for a bit, then goes into another long slump. That is our problem. If he hit 260 I would be happy. But I havent seen him hit 260 yet. He is a .255 career hitter. That's pretty damn close to .260. -
White Sox possibly looking at Sean Burroughs
TaylorStSox replied to Cubs Suck23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sean "4 extra base hits all year" Burroughs is an upgrade for Crede? Where do you ppl think of this crap? -
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 14, 2005 -> 01:30 PM) I don't want to see the Sox ever try to make Cotts into a starter. A big reason why a lot of guys have more success in the bullpen than in the starting rotation is because they can get away without having a lot of pitches in their arsenal. Cotts has a fastball and slider right now, that's all. That's fine when you're in the pen, but as a starter, it could equate to problems. Also, Cotts will likely never have great control. For those games in which Cotts can't find the plate, it's a lot easier to pull him after two batters when he's in the pen than it is to have to pull your starter in the 3rd inning. Cotts doesn't throw a slider. He throws a fastball, curve and change. He doesn't need to feature the change because his fastball and curveball are dominating right now. I'd like to see him cut his fastball. With that, he'd be a starter. he definitely has the arm. In the future, he projects as a 3 imo, and always has.
-
If somebody would have said last year that people would be crying about a 7-2 5th starter, everyone would have hung him. He's kept us in almost every game he's started. That's all we can really expect from him.
-
Why would we trade Joe Crede for Joe Crede Sr.??(Randa) Making trades for the sake of trades are only fantasies of arm chair GM's who chat on message boards.

QUOTE(Dam8610 @ May 31, 2005 -> 10:53 PM) Two words: HELL NO! That is quite possibly the worst trade the White Sox could realistically make. Take Buehrle and Hoffman out and replace Anderson with a lesser prospect, and I'd do it in a heartbeat, because Jake Peavy already is what we're all hoping Brandon McCarthy is going to be. I'd do it if Uribe wasn't involved. Greene's going to be a hell of a player but Uribe already is IMO. Anderson probably won't be a stud. Hoffman would be great for our pen. BMac is going to be a stud but wont be better than Peavy. It hurts to lose MB though.

QUOTE(beck72 @ May 25, 2005 -> 01:25 PM) The question is, could BMac throw better than some guys in the bullpen, ala Walker, cotts, Vizcaino and even Shingo? Probably yes. The question isn't whether McCarthy can succeed in the pen. He can. The question is what the best thing for his development is. He moved to AAA and struggled with the long ball. He had a 4.72 ERA down there. Obviously, there's things to work on. His change, while having a great motion, tends to stay up in the zone. His curve, at times a snap dragon, has the tendancy to hang. He gave up 9 long balls in 8 AAA starts. He needs to work on consistancy with the hook and keeping the change down. His development will be hindered by pitching sporadically in the majors. We can use him every now and then and it may hurt him. Or, we can have him pitch every 5th day and continue to develop. What if he gets hammered while pitching in Coors east off a good hitting MLB team? They'll dominate if he makes the same mistakes he made in AAA. The win now attitude is fine and all. But, not if it's at the expense of a 21 year old kid who might be a CHEAP top of the rotation starter for the next 5 years. No thanks. Cotts is doing fine.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 4, 2005 -> 09:53 AM) McCarthy might not pitch until 2 years from now when El Duque and Contreras' contracts are up. We might keep Contreras for way cheaper money, but I see El Duque retiring after his contract. Insert Brandon McCarthy there. But BMac isn't having such a great season in Charlotte now. No need to rush him for this year or next. His K/BB ratio is still good. He's facing the same thing he'll face at The Cell, pitching in a bandbox. Homers are killing him right now. That's just a fact of life when you pitch in small parks. There's no need to rush him. There's no need to worry about his performance thus far either.
-
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 3, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) Sheesh -- 2.50 ERA, Cy Young award winner? GMAB -- he's off to a hot start, and he'll most likely do better this year than in past year's, but that's awefully high praise for a guy who's been average his whole career. I'm excepting better things out of Jon this year (as opposed to years past), but I highly doubt he's in the top ten in AL Cy Young votes, and I doubt he's within a run of a 2.50 ERA... Being "average for a career" when you came up at 20 is high praise IMO. He's developing at the pace that should have been expected the whole time. He's always had number 1 stuff. He's had to learn how to pitch at the ML level. He's done well at that IMO. I don't think he'll win the Cy Young, but 19-8 3.81 ERA is definitely in his reach. He'll only get better.
-
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ May 3, 2005 -> 03:15 PM) I think you are depending too much on all of our prospects panning out and the attrition rate of such guys says that not all will Agreed. That's why I said, "if it all goes as planned." I'd also add Hernandez to the untouchable list. We always seem to lack depth at catcher, like everyone else.
-
If everything goes as planned, which it never does, I'd work on moving Contreras next year. I can't see anybody taking his contract, but there are stupid owners in baseball. That makes a place for BMac. Also, it frees up money to sign a FA 1st baseman or extend Crede. If we extend Crede, Fields moves to 1st or becomes trade bait. Then, you don't extend PK. He's expendable IMO. Maybe Fields and Anderson for Overbay. Or, Fields and Tracey or Liotta for Overbay. I'd keep Sweeney over Anderson. The only 3 untouchables are Sweeney, Bmac and Gio. Next, I'd use the money saved to ink Garland to a 4 year extension. After that, El Duque will leave. That makes room for Gio. It's all simple really.
