  1. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) Last I checked, fans are already paying way more than they used to for the exact same thing. In other words, 4 seats, four meals and 4 drinks are a lot more than they were 10,, 20, 30 years ago. Press seats have been and probably will always be free. So, I see nothing wrong with moving them down the line. They are still free, they are still warm and I thought the food was free too, but that may have changed since I worked Bulls and 'Hawks games. So again, I say...if you are up in arms, stay at home. EDIT: Plus, the press already has "picked sides" as to who is for and who is against the White Sox, Reinsdorf, Williams and Guillen, I don't think this will change anything. Baseball and the media work symbiotically, for better or worse. Do you not think that the organization gets anything in return for these "free seats?" Are there writers that show up just to go? Probably, but the beat writers have a job to do, day-in, day-out (and that includes, obviously, visiting media. what a great way to represent the city). I think reducing things to "free seats" is a terrible argument. Writers are there to write. They don't charge me $15 to walk in the door at my job, I don't see why baseball would, either. And if they made some changes at my office that made it more difficult to do my job (and against what every other business in that industry was doing), I'd probably complain, too.
  2. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 02:31 PM) Its because they are getting in free, why shouldnt they get the worse seats? From where they are sitting they can still see the game and they no doubt have TV's in there and they are still allowed to see/interview the players afterwards, what more do they need? The point is that they (the White Sox) are the only team to do this, though they probably won't be the last ... selling out the baseballl writers for a few bucks. Maybe the team should start selling beer for $15 each so they can re-sign Dye. And I still fail to see what any of this has to do with coal mining.
  3. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 06:37 PM) Soxfan101 said all I needed to say. That still doesn't explain why writers at U.S. Cellular should have the worst view in the majors becuase they don't work in coal mines.
  4. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 07:10 PM) And their work is a physical grind like working in a coal mine. Pardon me if I lack sympathy. And how is that even remotely relevant?
  5. QUOTE(Shamrock4Life @ Apr 7, 2007 -> 02:34 PM) well i know that the press get free food at bear games so i would imagine baseball would be no different. Unless the policy has changed recently, media meals are not free. According to the 2005 media guide (which has been in my study aka bathroom for way too long), media meals are $7, with $3 hot dogs in the press box. If anything, they're probably more expensive now. I think I've read that media guide front-to-back about a hundred times. Maybe it's time to invest in a current one.
  6. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 07:28 PM) They should all line up so I could slap them individually with the upper stratosphere chair that I sat in during the playoffs. Free Food, Free attendance, and Free Heat on Cold Days. Most of them are not even fans. This post would be great to send to the Saturday Sound Off section in Sports in the Trib. I certainly hope the writers aren't fans. That's not what they're there for. Free food? Nope. Free seats? I guess you could spin it that way, but keep in mind that they are there in a working capacity, not to sit around and slam beers.
  7. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/pre...sp&c_id=mlb Cable comes through in the end.
  8. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Mar 21, 2007 -> 03:00 PM) Article This is genius. Either cable keeps EI, it makes MLB look evil (and blows their PR ruse to bits) or the whole thing winds up in court and everybody gets screwed! Horray for MLB and it's shady dealings. Here's hoping that MLB stays on cable (and the cable operators sue MLB and DirecTV for a cut of the baseball channel). This is all in the lawyers' hands now. Cable called MLB's bluff. It could get ugly.
  9. You calling me a liar? Seriously, traffic in Phoenix is AWFUL. Anyhoo, if anyone is going to be around Tucson this weekend, traffic will probably be backed up on I-10 around Marana, specifically the Tangerine Road exit. The PGA Tour is in town, so be forewarned if you'll be north of the city. Tiger lost today, so I already blew my chance to run into him at the Circle K. But if you are in town, and you like pro rodeo, La Fiesta de los Vaqueros is going on, too. It's at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds, which isn't too far from TEP. I'll be at the game Wednesday, probably in the lawn seats.
  10. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 23, 2007 -> 11:07 AM) Linky. Good news on Uribe if true. Prinz seems low risk. I went to high school with Bret Prinz, before his family moved to Arizona.
  11. Sorry, I'm chiming in late here. Make sure to visit guero canelo for a Sonoran hot dog. Mmm, Sonoran hot dog. Caramelos are also fantastic. It's on 12th Ave., take Ajo west (toward the 19) from TEP and go south on 12th. http://www.elguerocanelo.com/ Also, if you're looking for a nice place to eat with the missus, Cafe Poca Cosa (it's downtown) is HIGHLY recommended. http://pocacosatucson.com/ Seriously, there are TONS of fantastic places to eat in Tucson, especially if you like Mexican food. If you're in a hurry, there's a Los Betos fairly close to the stadium at Ajo and Palo Verde (east of TEP on Ajo). It's middle-of-the-road Mexican food (certainly nowhere close to Tucson's best, but a big step up from craptacular Taco Bell), but it is kinda hard to screw up a carne asada burro. As a side note, I was at the U.S. vs. Mexico soccer match in Glendale a few weeks ago. It took longer to drive from Sky Harbor to Glendale than it did to drive from Tucson to Sky Harbor. So be careful what you wish for, Sox fans.
  12. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 06:02 PM) Tucson is not happy about this at all and I think Governor Napolitano might end up vetoing this measure because the Arizona sports commision is meant to get extra sporting money from the other states not from cities inside the Arizona. And Pima county also is her biggest supporter which doesn't hurt. http://www.azstarnet.com/dailystar/156117 I don't know if there's anything for the governor to veto. I think the commission is a Maricopa County group. This sounds like it's pretty much a done deal, but it's going to have wide-reaching effects. Spring training in Tucson might die forever because of it, and it very well could have a significant impact on the Grapefruit League. Cleveland still needs a partner for their new place in Goodyear, and the White Sox will need someone to take over their lease at TEP. And the Diamondbacks will most likely want to share TEP with an AL team. One possibility is the Marlins, if the franchise moves to a western city (Las Vegas, San Antonio, Portland), since they'll have nothing tying them to spring training in Florida. I know Cincinnati isn't all that happy with Sarasota, though there are talks for a new stadium there. Although it said in the Star article above that Cleveland will not be moving back to Tucson, the article linked below says that Arizona might not approve both stadiums (the one in Goodyear and the Sox/Dodgers park in Glendale). http://www.tcpalm.com/tcp/pro_baseball/art...5144750,00.html
  13. just threw in an hour's worth of votes....
  14. QUOTE(tealeafreaderii @ Jun 24, 2006 -> 04:28 PM) He could move AJ to DH... I think if you put the DH spot in the order in the field, you forfeit the DH and have to hit the pitcher.
  15. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ May 27, 2006 -> 03:47 PM) Thought I would pass on the games I know of for Sox fans that need that National TV to watch our Sox Monday, 29 May (Day Game) on WGN as Sox take on Cleveland Tuesday, 30 May (5:05 PM MDT) ESPN has the Sox and Tribe I have read something about the Sunday, June 11 game being changed from a day game to a night game for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball as the Sox are home vrs the Tribe See you on the television If you, or any other out-of-towners such as myself, have an extra $150 stuck in your couch cushions, I would highly recommend the MLB Extra Innings package. You get a good chunk of Sox games, plus a truckload of other MLB games. You won't get every game, but it's well worth the investment, IMHO.
  16. Hawk: "One thing people don't realize is Pierzynski hit Barrett a hell of a lot harder than Barrett hit him. "
  17. Thome would snap Zambrano in half if he hit him.
  18. Barrett - AJ was walking toward me and I didn't know what was going on. So I guess I'll just grab him and throw a punch. Umm, dude, he was walking over to pick up his batting helmet.
  19. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 19, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) Why not bring a sign that says something. Such as: I just wanted to see what it felt like to be a loser. Seconded.
  20. I called the Trop for tickets and asked what time the game was. They said, what time can you get here? Thank you, thank you, be sure to tip your waitresses and bartenders. Seriously, I'll be at the game tomorrow night. Got some ridiculously sweet seats down the first base line.
  21. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ May 16, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) FLsouthsider, thank you for mentioning the Milkman. There's really not enough love for him around these parts. In every boy's life, there's a summer of 2000. OK, so I was 22, but still.
  22. Favorite 80s player (and overall) is Fisk. It's part of the reason I played catcher in little league. That and the first things the give the fat kid on the first day of practice are shinguards and a chest protector. 90s... gotta be Frank. Best player in franchise history, easily. The 00s ... gotta be Buehrle. He cracks me up. Some other favorites ... Guillen, Kittle, Grebeck, Black Jack, Konerko, Herbert Perry, James Baldwin, Ventura, Karko, Lance Johnson, Steve Lyons, Danny Pasqua, Don Pall, Richie Dotson, Ivan Calderon....
  23. Oh, and don't be surprised to see Kyle Lohse dealt somewhere by the deadline. I think the GM would rather eat a light bulb than lose another arbitration case.
  24. I could be wrong, but I don't think it's a $12M bonus Hunter is due next year, but a $12M club option. And with the Twins being what they are salary-wise, it's kind of difficult to imagine them spending that much on one player. But if Radke retires (and his $9M salary goes off the books) maybe they make a play to keep him. The thing is, Hunter *is* the Twins, both to fans and especially in that clubhouse (and he's a heckuva nice guy to boot). There is no doubt who the pack leader is on that team. Here's a hint, it ain't Joe Mauer, at least not yet. Terry Ryan is about as shrewd as they come, but I suspect it would take an overwhelming package of prospects to get him to deal Hunter. You can multiply that a few times if you want to gauge a trade within the division. Then again, Luis Castillo is in his free-agent year, and I believe same for Shannon Stewart. Batista is nothing more than a gamble to fill a hole, Rondell White isn't the solution to anything and Punto and Bartlett just don't look like everyday ballplayers at this level. And the Twins are still hoping that Jason Kubel can get back to the form he showed two years ago before he tore his knee to shreds and give them a productive, steady right fielder. The Twins are always better when they field a team guys brought up through their system, and Hunter is a prime example. When they get away from that, tap the panic button and start loading up the lineup with Tony Batistas, that's when they get in trouble. And now they have a lineup of stopgap solutions and several key pieces that are free agents after the season. Really not an eviable position. One thing is for certain. If the Twins lose Hunter, through trade or free agency, it will be a devastating blow to that organization. Without Hunter, I think that teams just falls to pieces. Sheesh, I think I know more top-to-bottom about the Twins organization than I do the Sox at this point.
