Bill Veeck said it best, you don't make any money operating a baseball team. You make your money selling a baseball team. An owner, considering they all have such deep pockets to begin with, just doesn't want to take a bath in any given year. Year-to-year, the intent isn't to squeeze out a couple of pennies. Over time, you build value by having a big fan base, good TV contracts, strong revenues, etc. But the best thing about Jerry is he just wants to win. That's it.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 17, 2005 -> 04:15 PM) I was thinking last night about how long you could track the paths of some of these players back to the Sox, and how amazing of a job was done assembling this team. Konerko...traded for Mike Cameron. Uribe...Aaron Miles. Joe Crede...draft. Aaron Rowand...ditto. Pods...Carlos Lee trade Jon Garland...Matt Karchner Jose Contreras...Via Esteban Loaiza, who was signed as a FA himself Cotts...via Keith Foulke, who came via the surrender deal Mark Buehrle...whopping 38th round draft pick Freddy...Reed, Olivo, and Morse. Free Agents: AJ Gooch Hermy Jenks Dye I think it says a lot about this organization that our highest paid free agent signee is Jermaine Dye. My argument, especially to Yankee and Red Sox fans, has been that this whole team is made up of either guys nobody else wanted or guys we acquired via trade or the draft. Who wanted to sign Dye? The Sox and the D-Backs. Who wanted A.J.? Nobody. Who wanted Gooch? A lot of teams looked at him, including Boston, but wouldn't pull the trigger. Nobody was beating down the door trying to get at Cliff Politte or Dustin Hermanson. Bobby Jenks was waived by the Angels. But none of this matters now. They're all OUR guys now.

I seem to remember that book making the white sox look like fools. That Beane and friends raped the White Sox by getting Bradford, Durham, etc., for a steaming pile of snot. But the players we got in return have become incredibly valuable. Cotts has been a lefty stud out of the pen, and Olivo, while he gave us some decent seasons, was part of the group that brought Freddy Garcia. Seems to me that these trades worked out pretty good, seeing as Bradford and Durham are no longer in Oakland, and the A's never made it this far. Now, that Todd Ritchie trade, that's a different story.

QUOTE(NYSox35 @ Oct 17, 2005 -> 04:32 AM) Nice work on the curls...You should really be in "shape" for the World Series now! Awesome on the movies...I've been listening to thunderstruck a ton too and have obsessively watched the ALCS Game 2 video set to "winning it all" by the outfield. It's awesome! Are you in FL? Making it to chicago at all? I'm gonna try to head in for game 6-7 (Even if I don't get tickets)...do you see a 6 game series happening? I'm gonna try like hell to get tickets on the internet on tuesday. I already told 'em at work that if I get my hands on some, I'm going to disappear for a few days.

QUOTE(NYSox35 @ Oct 17, 2005 -> 04:23 AM) UGH!...haha, yep 9am Corporations and 11am Professional Responsibility... it will not be a fun 3 hours, but I just cannot sleep... I tried and everything! Don't you?!?! My college days are a good five years behind me, but I'm getting back into shape with some 12 oz. curls this evening. There's no way I could sleep, between periods of damn near crying while watching highlight movies and listening to Thunderstruck about 74 times.

Tears of all the White Sox Fans in Heaven
FLsouthsider replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Awesome, man. I know my great grandpa (Papa) and my grandpa are looking down and smiling on all of this, like so many Sox fans before us. -
QUOTE(The Critic @ Oct 17, 2005 -> 03:01 AM) My Dad ( damn, I miss that dude ) was a diehard Cub fan. He used to call Comiskey Park "The Boneyard". It would have been fun to debate this season with him. Here's to ya, Dad!!!! I know you're happy for me!!! My Dad is also a Cubs fan. Needless to say he's more than a little nervous right now. Luckily, my Mom is a Sox fan. Their house is like World War III right now. There was talk of a remote control being shoved in an unclean place the other night....

QUOTE(The Bones @ Oct 17, 2005 -> 02:51 AM) Down at Illinois State there was a few thousand people that marched down the streets into the quad, the football field, the library, pretty much all across campus. Anyone else got any stories of taking it to the streets anywhere? I just about s*** myself. Does that count?

The Sox haven't lost a playoff game when I've been at work. ALCS Game 1? Sitting on the couch. And, yes, I'm working tomorrow.

QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Oct 14, 2005 -> 04:17 PM) This is a crappy photo I know, but our scanner is out of order for now, so I just took a photo of it. The text above the pics says, strike 1, foul ball, etc... The last shot of him pointing says "Bases no longer loaded"... Hopefully someone else with a scanner can get it up. nice sheets.

How the umps will call the rest of the games
FLsouthsider replied to Texsox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 09:45 AM) I think the umps believe it was the right call. During their press conference last night, they were pretty adamant about that. This was not an umpiring mistake. It was a cathers mistake. Yeah, but there's no way an ump on that crew second-guesses the home-plate ump. At least not five minutes after the game is over. The umps are going to stick together, right or wrong. -
Konerko is a huge reason why we are where we are right now. By all accounts, he's a clubhouse leader and no question a great representative of the organization. On a side note, I got into a baseball argument with a buddy of mine during spring training. Even to my loud objection, he insisted that Mike Sweeney was a better ballplayer than Konerko. After yesterday's game, my friend apologized and admitted his ignorance.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 10:25 PM) why don't you post his cell number and I'm sure some of us would be happy to give him a ringy dingy. Hmm... it's tempting... very tempting. who wouldn't want to be woken up by a "YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOAAARD" from a 708 number at 4 a.m.?

A good friend of mine is a huge Red Sox fan (and one that talked a whole bunch of trash before the series started), and he's going on a roadtrip tomorrow. I happen to have another friend/accomplice who will be in the car. Now, I have Nancy Faust's version of "Kiss Him Goodbye" in real audio format. Who knows how to either burn this directly onto an audio CD or convert it to mp3 format? My accomplice will be slipping it into the CD player, courtesy of yours truly, about an hour after departure. Thanks in advance.

I jumped out of my chair at work and screamed, "wrap that around your fat ass you tub of s***!" and then high-fived everyone in the room that didn't think I was insane.

Best excuse you've heard from a Red Sox fan

One of my good friends is a huge Red Sox fan. Haven't heard from him in the last two days. Wonder why? -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 12:56 PM) ESPN cut to a commercial, of course. I have it saved on the Tivo, but it's only about three seconds worth.
-
I was at work and we had the game on the TV. When Francona yanked Clement, I leaned over to the guy next to me, and he made a remark about the crowd going nuts. I told him, no, no, no, wait, they're gonna serenade him now. Sox fans sure didn't let me down. I Tivo'd the game at home and listened to those three seconds about a hundred times. That joint was about to freaking explode. Here's hoping the juice gets turned up a notch tomorrow.
