  1. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 07:23 PM) Kenny as a personsell/gm is very good. The things that bother me are the way he handles certain situations from a PR standpoint. Basically put I think he could be a bit smarter in the public eye but as a whole he knows his stuff, works hard, has severe passion, and is not afraid to be critisized (and the key to being successful is never being afraid, however, it doesn't mean you shouldn't evaluate and take in the opinions of others and I think Kenny does go to his people a lot). Basically put, I still rank him among the 5-7 best GM's in the game. MF'ing Bingo, my friend! You have hit the nail on the head. Kenny was and still is one of the very best GMs in the game today. To top it off, he's our homegrown guy and played a HUGE hand in bringing us the 2005 title. It amazes me how quick people are to "jump" on someone. Did his plans pertaining to the OF or BP pan out this year? No, they didn't. Guess what though - we still have the core of a great team and KW will build us back into a winner again as soon as next season. Get off the guy's back, sit back and get ready to be in the chase again in 2008.
  2. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 05:07 PM) I believe someone asked what his last name was and it was provided. Ah, my bad
  3. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 04:25 PM) Chris Young, he plays centerfield for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Who cares? Depsite a current hole in CF, Javy is way more valuable.
  4. QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 09:36 PM) Which we both know their payroll won't go that high. I know it's an unpopular opinion around here, but I'm really disappointed with Kenny's decision to retain Mark. Because of the fact that you can't have a $14M pitcher on a team in midst of a complete rebuild, KW will now move forward with this re-tooling crap that he is somehow convinced will work. If a month ago KW would have just pulled the trigger and traded Mark we could then have admitted we were rebuilding (while also getting max return on him). With that, KW could have dealt the rest of the rotation (minus Danks) along with anyone else on the roster. Now he'll look like a fool if he trades JG or Javy because he will all but eliminate any last glimmer of hope for next season. I was one of KW's biggest supporters but I'll tell ya, his work since the championship has really been horrible. Why can't the "re-tooling crap" work? With our strength in starting pitching it's not as bleak as you make it out to be. Should Kenny be criticized for signing Mark to a well below market deal? Should he have traded him for less than he's worth - b/c the top prospects you want him to rebuild with weren't being offered.
  5. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 09:21 PM) Last I checked, there are still 3 weeks of July left. I am 90% sure there will be trades, probably multiple, involving our pitchers. Just may not be today or tomorrow. And if KW has shown anything, its that he would never be building towards 3 seasons out. His target is usually the present, or at worst, the upcoming season (2008). Bingo!
  6. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 08:43 PM) Standing past is absolutely ridiculous. It honestly upsets me to even think about the possibility of not trading any starting pitcher. How exactly is the ballclub expected to improve in future seasons if not for the trade of someone holding value? We've been over the various options for acquiring talent, and this team has practically none of them working in their favor. Since Buehrle's presence on this ballcub is assured, Garland should be traded. This entire scenario with contract extensions and the possibility of not receiving top value (because of time remaining on a contract) in return will only be rehased again next season. We're not winning anything within the immediate future whether Williams realizes it or not. I'd rather have whichever package is received for Garland and Contreras, in addition to the likely struggles of their replacements, rather than have both pitch meaningless games. 2010 should be the goal. Perhaps by then, DLS will be available. 2010 seems a bit bleak given our starting pitching and some of our offensive pieces. Why not just get rid of Jose, see what Richar can do, and retool in the offseason... I think we can put a solid club out in 2008, let alone 2009
  7. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 07:11 PM) So how much cash will we have to send to Boston to offset some of the salaries between Buehrle and Wily Mo Pena?
  8. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 04:09 PM) It's not our national anthem, why show it the same respect? If they play "Courtesy of the USA" or "Born in the USA" would you stand for it? Does baseball think they don't have any atheist, agnostic, or other non-God worshiping religions fans? That is actually a good point. I don't like the song itself, but I like what they're trying to do with it. If there was some better song than God Bless America, I guess I'd prefer that as an alternative.
  9. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 03:57 PM) Please, no more God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch. It's for Take Me Out to the Ballgame. That being said, this guy is good. I disagree. We do both at every Yankees game and I think it's a nice tribute, especially considering what is still going on in the world. It only takes an extra minute and they still do Take Me Out to the Ballgame right after.
  10. QUOTE(briguy27 @ Jul 7, 2007 -> 05:17 PM) NICE BUNT JUANY Just fly out to deep right, center, or left JO. NICE BASE-RUNNING ROB! F*** YOU! What happened?
  11. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 7, 2007 -> 12:24 PM) Buehrle's last start in a White Sox uniform will also be the only game we win in this series. Also, the picks to click today have to be #7 Owens and #27 Fields /meaningless predictions Thanks for the info regarding Mark, KW...
  12. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 5, 2007 -> 05:12 PM) best point: Agreed 100%. This is what I hope to see happen.
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 07:02 PM) Russell is not even close to being a possibility right now. If anything, they should try to make him into a righty set-up man. Yeah, his #'s don't look that hot this year. What do you think of Broadway, Egbert or Gio as a #5 if Floyd was the #4?
  14. QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 06:56 PM) actually I think he will offer them an extension if he signs mark. Most likely he will do this in the off season. Tehn he will get rid of both jose and vasquez. build around Burhel garland and danks. To me, this is the optimal plan. I'd like to hang on to JV too, but if finances dictate it, I'd be fine with 2 of Floyd/Broadway/Gio/Egbert/Russell to go along with the 3 you named.
  15. QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 06:41 PM) You missed nothing. I said the same damn thing last week and I was laughed at. The offer to help Mark pack still stands. Doesn't seem so far fetched now, does it... Why would he sign at such a discount only to risk being shipped out?
  16. QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 06:29 PM) Well then i would completely advise mark not to sign any contract with the whitesox. In addition i think that kind of money would hand cuff our team from getting better. Therefore I would start the trading forum immediately. Buerhle is no ace and that to me is ace money. In addition, I do not think the cardinals will give him a ton more as well. The economics are what they are. The two teams Buerhle wants to play with won't give him the kind of money your talking about. The sox with or without buerhle are still a fourth place team. Time to unload the guy. I can certainly see buerhle giving up a fifth year at 14 million to sign with the sox. Although thats alot of money its a caluclated risk that he will be healthy after the fourth year and will be young enough for a another contract. Again its a calculated risk, but I do not believe he will get more than 5 years on his next contract.Just my opinion. I see your points, I just think that at the start of this, most of us thought it'd take 5 years $75 million to get him signed (at least). When the #'s about 4 years 56 million came out, I couldn't believe my ears and thought it was a great deal. I understand the idea of unloading a pitcher, I just think it should be JC or JV instead of Mark like many on the board have suggested. Why not build around Mark, JG and Danks going forward? That's just me though.
  17. Whoopy! We extended our term from 3 years to 4. Well, I guess that should just about do it there then. For the record, I think $14 million a year is a fair offer, but while it's fair from the Sox, it's certainly also fair from Mark's end of things. Also for the record, Zito's contract is 7 years at 18 million per. I don't think I or anyone else thinks he'd get that on the open market, but should mark hit FA, I find it exceedingly hard to believe that 4 for 56, or even 5 for 75 is what he'd go for. Someone would step in and come up with a 6th year or 16 million for 4 or 5 years. Given that, we should give this guy the FULL NTC. The whole fiasco is a joke... QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) WELL...it would mean 3 more years of more money guaranteed. Not sure I understand your question. What am I missing here? someone said he is passing up 30 -40 million dollars moe to stay with the sox. Do you beleive that? If so how are you calculating it? Most likely by adding 3 more years. 30 to 40 is probably on the high end, but it's certainly in the range of 20-25 million (5 for 75 would be 19 million)
  18. QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) I sincerely do not beleive that anyone would give up 30 or 40 million. There is just no way ANY agent or pitcher does that, so I think comparing him to Zito is a complete mistake and a wste of time. Now if you want to say he is worth an extra year at 14 million then I would understand, but he will not get barry Zito money. I certainly don't think 5 at 16 = 80 or 6 at 15 = 90 is that out of the question for Mark. It's not so far-fetched that he's leaving a ton on the table.
  19. This whole thing is a joke and the wool is being pulled over our eyes by Sox management. Letting guys in the past go has worked with mixed success, but this one will be a complete and utter failure on our end. Four years, $56 Million....are you kidding me? Could any of us have thought this was possible? Mark is being more than reasonable - NTC clause or not. Give him the damn clause and let's go to war with MB and JG (and maybe JV) going forward. This is beyond an easy call...
  20. I have started thinking about this, and I now think I am in the camp of Keep/Re-sign Mark and trade away Jose and/or Vazquez. I don't know if the "Mets interested in Contreras" thing has any legs to it, but if so, I say get that one done. Even if we get only one top prospect, I can live with that. I don't see how Jose fits into our plans. Javy I could go either way on. For the right deal, I'd say let's move him. That said, I'm leaning towards keeping him. MB $15, JV 11.5, JG 12, Danks minimum, Gio/Floyd/Other minimum = about the 40 million our rotation cost in 2005 I think that'd leave us enough room to go after one big star for the offense (A-Rod? Ichiro?) to pair with Konerko and Thome, or some solid parts (Castillo, Rowand and a good FA SS?) Anyway, just thinking out loud here...
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 04:58 PM) So....now that we've lost 9 series in a row and 24 out of 30, I ask this question: why does Ozzie Guillen have a job? God that paints a grim picture. I mean our record is bad, but I didn't realize those 2 stats regarding series.
  22. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 04:52 PM) To sum it up for you. Garland pitched amazing. Uribe's (although is hitting the ball well today) fielding cost the Sox at least 1 BIG run. Jenks (our only reliable guy from the pen) is getting hit hard. Nothing surprising here... nobody can come up w/ that clutch hit and the relievers are continuing to not RELIEVE the starters. Thanks for the summary, Scott. Sure sounds ugly...
  23. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) Listen online. I'm not watching it either yet I was able to tell it was a solid hit, not to mention the guy is having a great day at the plate. Common sense. Is there a free way to do that? I already shelled out $160 for MLB extra innings for when I'm home, so I don't want to pour more $ into this lost season.
  24. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 04:45 PM) Oh hell no.. Have you read any of the previous 9 pages..? There is NO room for common sense in this thread. Again, have no access to the game right now...
  25. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) I hope you are kidding. That was a hell of a swing he put on the ball there. Get your head out of your ass. Also Josh Fields> Joe Crede. Uh, I am in NY with no TV...just following online in the library. I'm pissed he didn't come through...
