  1. QUOTE(tealeafreaderii @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 09:41 PM) W00t Juan Uribe worked an 0-2 count full and gets a single! Great AB. Heck yea, good job Juan!
  2. "Juan Uribe singled to SS", how did that happen?
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 09:40 PM) He's pitching fantastic. Cool, care to eleborate?
  4. Is Garland pitching well or just getting lucky? Lots of fly balls from gametracker...
  5. WTF is with all these fly ball outs? Does JG have no sink on the sinker tonight or what?
  6. QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) What the hell was so impressive about thier June? Lose 2 of 3 to Boston. Lose 2 of 3 to CWS. Lose 1 of 3 to Tor. Then kick the livin day lights out of the NL. In May it was much the same story. Lose 2 of 3 to MIN. (not playing thier best ball at the time) Split w/Balt. (1 Rainout) Swept by the Yankees. When they play good teams, they lose. They are about to hit a patch where they are going to run into a string of good (or hot) teams. LOL, they suck, they should have swept the Blue Jays just like the Sox did....
  7. Probalby when I realized how damn good Bonderman, Verlander, Zumaya, Granderson, Thames and Guillen are. They have a good mix of youth and veterans and they should contend for awile. I'm enjoying the change of competition.
  8. Greg Walker has to get some credit here. I'd say 10% All the rest goes to Uribe and BA for putting in the work and getting on track. Especially BA, 'cause he could have just folded after the terrible start, the pressure as a rookie on the champs, etc.
  9. I don't exactly see that as a "brutal stretch" until August. They have winnable series in KC, OAK, and SEA. They are good bets to take 1/3 from CLE, MIN, and CWS. The Tigers will go 11-8 IMO. In August, we'll see.
  10. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 01:16 AM) Reading that almost made my head explode. I might know what two of those things are. Don't take this as an attack on stats, though. I just don't pay attention to a lot of those things so they confuse me. It's pretty easy Milkman and none of those stats requires anything more than basic division. I'll run them down really quick: P/PA -- Pitches per plate appearance. The higher the better. Everyone agrees patience at the plate is good. It tires the pitcher, creates walks, etc. K/BB -- Strikeout to walk ratio. A good indicator of how well a player commands the strike zone, but not the end all. (See Jim Thome!!) ISO -- Simply Slugging minus BA. A good indicator of what type a hitter a player is. Players with good ISO numbers are promising, because the potential is there to be harnessed in the form of increased plate discipline. It's usually brought up more in the minors to project players, but it's helpful in Juan's case to show that he has a fair amount of power, it's just his overall hitting that needs work. BABIB -- Batting average balls in play. Simply a measure of how many hits a player has when he puts the ball in play. If you've played the game or just watched a lot, you know that sometimes rockets are hit right at people and sometimes dribbles make it through the hole. BABIB help tell when a player has just gotten "lucky". FB % and LD % Just the % of fly balls and line drives a player hits. Good hitters obviously hit more line drives and home run hitters obviously hit more fly balls. Players with high LD % (Frank Thomas for example) usually have very good BABIB, and good stats in general. I hope that helped. I wish more people had an open mind about so called "advanced" stats. This is just common sense stuff that is helpful to judge how a player is performing, and how they might do in the future.
  11. QUOTE(TaylorStSox @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 01:04 AM) You can't make everyone your perfect SABR hitter. If you take a guy like Uribe and tell him to take more pitches, you ruin the good things he does at the plate. That's why the logic is flawed. Some guys are made to take cuts. Juan's one of them. reason#23498723 that statheads just don't get it. LOL! I'll never get it! Way to respond to a very reasonable post on Uribe. Jesus, you don't have to be a "stathead" to want the man to take a f***ing walk every one and awile. This isn't "Dusty Baker" base clogging ball!
  12. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 12:46 AM) I still want to see what his stat line is at the end of the season. I just went over to fangraphs to check out his trends, and it's pretty crazy what he's doing right now. Prior to this year, his BB%, P/PA and K/BB had all been trending up, which was very encouraging to us Juan fans and stat heads. Now, they are almost all down. However, his ISO, and FB% are WAY up. He's having an AJ like 2005 almost: lots of fly balls with plenty of HR and doubles, few walks, lower BA and subpar OBP. His BABIB is down, as is his line drive percentage. His ISO is over 2, which is very, very good. If he can start taking soem damn walks, he'll be a damn fine hitter. I don't expect it though, and I'm a big Juan supporter/apoligist.
  13. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 22, 2006 -> 07:54 AM) This is a REAL important time in Juan Uribe's career right now. I think most people around in baseball would definitely say he's among the best 3 or 4 defensive shortstops in the game .... So I still think Uribe is gonna be the starter when it's all said and done, and at some point, he will hit. The only question is when. Good and prescient post there DBAH0!
  14. Jesus, if he could just learn a little plate discipline, he'd easily be one of the most dangerous hitting SS in MLB. He's a good bet for 20 homers every year though, not many SS can say that. He's got his OPS at .702 now, which is actually respectable with his defense included.
  15. WALLACE SIGNS WITH BULLS! 4 YEARS 52 MILLION! Sorry. Had to get that out. Breaking news on ESPN.com
  16. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 06:31 PM) Sorry, I'll forgive you if you forgive me. I don't make a new thread too often, but I have been here awhile now and love the board and post when I have something to say. I think we should have a reunion in the future and all have a beer. It's all good, and I'll drink to that:
  17. QUOTE(PJBMD @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 06:31 PM) It's called hypocricy. It might be called that, but it's spelled hypocrisy.
  18. QUOTE(PJBMD @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 06:03 PM) I still don't understand why this poll and thread are not trolling? It says, "these players have done well and these players stink." I find it offensive on a Sox talk site. It does no good to chastise posters and then do the exact same kind of thing with a thread. It also does no good to chatise one and let your buddies slide. If we can't talk about what players have done well and what players stink, we might as just well close the forums. Your opinion is way, way off base here.
  19. It's wierd, right now I have more faith in Garland and Garcia than Buehrle and Vasqeuz.
  20. My biggest disapointment is Garland. I thought he turned a corner last season with his improved BB/9 and better use of his sinker. He can still have a good season, but I was expecting more. My biggest surprise is Thornton. This guy was junk, a scrapheap claim that probably would be out of MLB if the Sox hadn't traded for him on the advice of Cooper. Thornton has performed very well, and he needs to be seeing more high leverage innings. He is pitching aggresively and has confidence in himself. The team is slightly ahead of where I pegged them. I predicted 93-95 wins before the season started. The offense is certainly outperforming expectations, and the pitching underperforming. According to various metrics, the team D is still very good.
  21. QUOTE(Sox It To Em @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 12:37 PM) We're halfway through the season and our ERA has rose like nearly one point since last year. So yes, I don't see it as being overly pessimistic to be concerned about our starting pitching. Nobody is heralding the s***ty way the SP have performed over the last month, but many of us thought that a number of guys--Buehrle, Count, and Garland--had career years last year and that it would impossible to duplicate. So we're not that surprised. KW thought this too, which is why he beefed up the offense. Roll with it, it's a long season and we're just at the halfway mark.
  22. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) Please clarify your comments. What is wrong with considering we have some TV heroes? Looking at some of your past comments it seems you like one sentence replies to jack up your post total, but they don't have much positive comment to them if any. I see that we have some bad games to go along with a lot of good games and am just making mention of a real good one that kind of makes it a bit easier to have a bad one. Jeesh, give me a break. During the offseason I had several multi paragraph posts over 500 words on player previews, team previews, thoughts on possible trades, trades that did go down, etc. Besides, everyone knows the game threads are the best for getting up a post count. My point was that I thought AJ was being cast in a Hollywood film. He's not; I'm dissapointed.
