That 80% projection on Vaughn is wild. And by wild I mean puke.
-
Honestly surprised ZIPS has that rosy of a 80% percentile projection for the SP. That gives me a little hope.
-
They will do a good job limiting it to a 6-3 loss. It would be ironic in a year they just say "f*** it" that a bunch of random guys they got for nothing outperforms Hahn's 50 million dollar pens.

Grifol: DeJong, Lopez, Maldonado are good on offense

I think it's pitch recognition and zone control against MLB pitching that has a scouting report on you and will attack every weakness without mercy. You just don't get that in college ball or even really in the high minors. It's a unique sport with the batter and pitcher battle. Defensively there's probably a bunch of guys that could play at 18, but there's no way they can control the zone well enough to hit much more than 200/220/300. -
Soroka and Kopech "breaking out" would be turning into decent 3rd or 4th starters that can actually pitch 150 innings. That would be awesome, it would still leave us short 3 starters once Cease is traded and about half a dozen decent relievers.
-
Yep, that about sums it up. Those three dudes being awesome gets us from "awful" to merely "bad" (mid 70s wins). Even if every position player hits their 80th percentile projections that pitching will be bad enough to keep us well under .500 This isn't a team you squint and see winning 80, this is a team you squint and see winning 72. It's a bad team with a low ceiling and a low floor.

A good team will need about 40 WAR. Say absolute best case scenario you get 5 from Moncada, 4 from Eloy, and 6 from Robert -- now find 25 more on the roster. There's no way bro.
-
Vaughn gets way too much leeway. He's as much a face of the failed rebuild as any of the other guys, including Yoan, Eloy, TA, Giolito etc. You trot him out there for 150 games at 1st and see what happens. If he doesn't hit this year, he's another guy that will have to be replaced if we want to win. Can't carry a replacement level 1B that hits righty.

Giolito to the Red Sox, 2 years $38.5 million, Y1 opt out

His second TJS, that sucks. At least he got a little cash tho. -
Yes, that would be epic, honestly.
-
I know it's work, but bump. Soxtalk traffic seems up this spring, might as well let the new faces see 5 actual White Sox for the 2024 season when they hit that like and subscribe.

Brutal. Mort gone this week too, although at least he made it to a reasonable 72.

2023: MLB news not AL Central-related
chitownsportsfan replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
That's a helluva deal for Philly. Those AAVs around him are just the new normal for superstars, and getting him on a three year deal is chef's kiss from the club's POV. -
With 4 lock down starters and a bevy of options for the 5th behind them that's a great strategy. We'll probably win 92 or so games. Wait, that's not right.
-
We need an "on the spectrum" tag for some posts.
-
We're going to have to unless we just want to win 70 games into perpetuity. One thing Getz has to do is impress upon JR that you have to pay for pitching in a contention window.
-
If given the choice I'd probably have Soroka staying healthy and turning into a solid 3rd starter as the nicest "win" of the year. We're so thin on pitching top to bottom just filling in a couple rotation slots with 2-3 WAR starters looks daunting after the deal Cease. Lopez ain't gonna hit for s%*#, but he'll play a decent middle infield I guess.
-
Solid outing for Soroka. One hard hit ball for a HR and some soft contact otherwise. Struck out two and and walked one in two innings.
-
A JR team? Bare minimum? No way!
-
I dunno but would it kill the Sox to innovate a bit and produce a fan friendly product?
-
Why the f*** can they not just stick a home plate feed up? f*** this franchise.
-
Don't see any path in 2025 unless every borderline SP they've brought in as a rehab project somehow stays healthy and pitches to a 2-4 WAR level. Even if the bats emerge in Colas, Colson and Ramos we're going to need at least 2-3 decent, league average or better SP before we compete for anything other than 90-100 losses.
-
I mean I've said it a few times, Getz has done a decent job doing what needs to be done to field the next good Sox team. None of it is sufficient so far, but all of it is required. We're in the early days of his tenure and much harder decisions will have to be made starting probably this summer -- but the steps so far have been the right direction.
-
Meh. Given where we are at the MLB level I don't really think it's worth celebrating some increased depth in an overall mediocre system. I'm not going to bemoan it, but that's (increased depth) pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a team that has bottom quintile MLB talent and isn't going to be trading away fringe prospects, at all (at least as part of deals to get MLB ready talent), until that MLB talent improves.
-
They will let him lay on the sword this year. So for the media and us fans, at least we'll get some comedic relief over his clownery to go with our 100 loss season.
