2023-24 NFL Season Thread

Look, no one is saying that Fields hasn't been part of the problem. He is definitely holding the ball too long. People have identified specific plays where he has had time, people have been open, and he's been unwilling to make the throw. No one. understands what is going on in his head right now but it's not a good place. If it isn't fixed, then he will struggle to be an average level QB. At the same time, it is also equally true that the coaching has been a part of the problem. There are multiple layers to this - bad and plain dumb play calling - in week 1 my video was "What the Hell was this play, he rolls out and there are no WRs on this side of the field", in week 2 the video was "exact same screen pass called 3 times in a row 3rd one turns into a pick". These are just blatant. We are seeing the problem in the stats - lack of designed runs, lack of rollouts which we know can be effective with him and which will impact the way the defense is defending them, lack of plans designed to give a WR a chance to make a play downfield. Now here's the hard part - how much does the coaching staff influence what is going on in Justin Fields's head right now? He seems to be in a worse spot than he was last year, has he done something wrong or has the coaching staff gotten into his head somehow? If it's the latter, what happens when this same franchise gets another QB next year, if they're already unable to take advantage of this QB's skills and to put him in a position to grow? -

Is he running 50% right now? He's had 4 designed runs right? So he's had 4 runs and 4 passes in 2 games? -

First of all, they traded away the #1 pick on a big gamble that "Fields was the guy". So you better find a way to put together a system that works for him. Second, offenses change all the bloody time. Many teams have to run different offenses if their backup QB comes in, because their starter often has skills that the backup doesn't have. Offenses change when teams change coordinators. Offenses change in the offseason. The idea that the Bears have an incredible offense that's been in place for 10 years and which has performed so well it shouldn't be adapted to Fields...is Nuts? -
2/3. We have a Fire a GM thread that has yet to show progress.

Naw, they're a little low on HR but still close to the middle of the pack, 20th overall. They have the fewest walks in MLB and it isn't even close, they have 10% fewer walks than any other team in the big leagues. This is their biggest weakness. The Dodgers have nearly 2x their number of walks. They are less patient than the royals. Furthermore, this isn't just affecting the OBP, it's also telling you what their approach is at the plate, it is super aggressive and vulnerable, so starting pitchers are able to last longer in games against them and can get players out with strikeouts or weak contact early in at bats. They don't see teams' weakest middle relievers because they never work up the pitch count, they never beat starters because a manager tries to stretch a guy out into the 6th or 7th inning with a high pitch count.

6, one fewer than the future Nashville organization. 1924 1925 1933 1965 1987 1991

At least they’re emphasizing patience and a good approach at the plate, right? (Disappointed Padme Amidala face).

Didn’t they literally do this two days ago? -
They’re being very clear, these aren’t priorities, athleticism is.
-
Oh so you see tons of promise for this team next year?
-
Yeah I mean they were appointment viewing until this trade. Who wouldn’t want to see this team with how they played in the first half?
-
They were what, 20 games below .500 at the trade deadline? If that’s interesting baseball to you, then more power to you.
-
Yeah I mean think of where they’d finish in the division this year with him. They were rolling with him, right? Totally dismantled an unstoppable force. How they could give up on a successful offense like this one I don’t know.
-
1. Still has no concept of getting on base more as a priority for the worst team at it. 2. Where does he plan to get these more athletic players before next year? They have a handful of trade resources but not a lot, they have some money to spent, but they are already talking about their bullpen needs when they have about 0.75 starting pitchers out of 6. Presumably this would involve trading all their tolerable prospects considering they’d need like 15 players.

The fact that MLB did not deal with this promptly as is required by the text of the CBA is consistent with this. It very much seems like the league was hoping this would go away between last summer and January, and suddenly got serious and dealt with their requirements in a few weeks once the accuser came forward in the press. Which has absolutely made me wonder if there are other ones where the accuser did not go public that we never heard of around the league.

The only innings Crochet ever pitched in the minor leagues were a half dozen rehab innings this year.

Exactly.
