IMO ,JR and perhaps the ISFA would have more credibility if the Sox ownership group (or possible ISFA) acquired the 78 parcel to get Related the he11 out of there. The Sox could then develop their own plans and avoid some of the developer greed shown in the density of buildings and the site plan. If the Sox owns the whole parcel, now you are talking about something that could make more sense.

I'm impressed by how silly this is.

The White Sox have approximately zero experience developing and marketing the following things: hotels, apartments/condominiums, retail businesses not related to baseball, bars, full service restaurants, outdoor green spaces and parks, parking garages, major city developments, major environmental rehabilitation projects.

Having Related involved in this effort gives it credibility as possible. If they didn't exist, the White Sox would be trying to find other companies to do this.

I can see the headline now: "Sheets, Once a Camp Afterthought, Pushing for Playing Time".

This is already becoming a minor irritant with my interest this season. By the 4th week of spring, he needs to be cut and replaced with the sloppy seconds from some other, better team that has an actual roster and 40 man crunch.

Obviously injuries could change this with as many old players as they signed, but I’m expecting like 5 guys pruned from the 40 man to make room for vetz at the end of spring training. He’ll be replaced by Pillar and Moustakas if they’re healthy.

If I'm Sheets' agent I might just request a DFA. He can go make more money in Japan or something.

He might be there eventually. For now, he can try to have a really good spring and play for a roster spot here or somewhere else, and what are the odds Eloy gets hurt in the spring clearing an opening day roster spot? 1 in 3?

Checking Korea, the average player salary there is like $40k a year. He can make that in like 10 days on a MLB roster:

Sheets has an option as well, so he can just be sent to Charlotte

That assumes the White Sox don't need his 40 man spot. Frankly, after all their signings, they probably want it for a veteran.

I think Sheets might have some trade value, perhaps as a throw in to a possible Baltimore trade, if that is at all possible at some point....since his father played for the O's.  He is faster than I thought in RF and has a decent arm. He can also platoon at 1B and DH or pinch hit late in games when the only hope left lies with a HR to tie or win. Moose has a shot in ST though. It will be fun to watch all of the competition for getting on the roster.

No, he doesn't. He has zero value. Currently he would occupy a 40 man roster spot for a team like Baltimore that likely doesn't have room for one, so taking him back is a net negative for them. He is likely to be on waivers in a few weeks to make room for others, teams can easily see how many NRIs the White Sox brought in to replace him.

Aside from the $1.5 million payroll, I think the difference is negligible. DeJong is probably the more consistent defensive shortstop, right? Rosario's a little better with the bat.

I mean, last 3 years it's 5.4 fWAR vs. 1.7. but yes, DeJong has been a more reliable fielder.

and I get that, but somehow, as nice as it looks, its the White Sox and I don't think it will be a destination place nationally. Really, the only destination MLB parks are Wrigley and Fenway. I'd love for JR to build it. It's also predicated on its being built will spur the other development where companies would actually have to pay. Do you really think this park will get the others built? And if so, what kind of timeline? There are so many stalled projects.

I don't buy this at all. I've done my fair share and have numerous others I'd like to do. Yankee Stadium I haven't done, Pittsburgh is excellent and worth a trip to, I'd like to get Cincinnati, St. Louis, Baltimore, San Francisco is at the top of my list for a game, I've hung out in that area repeatedly on days when there are no games. Dodgers Stadium is a fun experience since it's so huge. Most of the excitement at Minute Maid was due to this weird banging coming from the home team dugout, I wonder if they ever figured out what that was, Danny seemed bothered by it.

The Sox could have had him for free - right? I should say - the only cost the Sox would have had would have been whatever the PV of paying Hendricks now vs. the ability to defer his payment over how many years.

Yes, but only for this year. The Red Sox basically are paying him $10 million for 2025, with a tiny sweetener of "maybe he can throw a few innings in late 2024."

So let me ask you, if you had 1 payment left on your mortgage, and decided you would get another 30 year mortgage  as soon as you made that payment, you wouldn't consider that new?

If they want to extend the hotel tax, by all means do, but redirect the funds to something else. I live in the Gold Coast. My next door neighbor got mugged walking her dog Saturday night at 9 pm. I'd like more cops.

If I had a lease on a car that was ending, and I took out another lease on a new car for similar money, would I consider that a new expense?

It will come from (originate) from taxes which come from taxpayers. Are you saying whoever, Bears or Sox, asks for less is the good guy and whoever asks for more is the bad guy?

Extending the hotel tax is very different from creating a new tax or asking for funds from the current state government. A TIF, as on this site, is very different from extending the hotel tax, and that is also very different from creating a new tax.

You can find the gory details of the last version of that here: https://www.lib.niu.edu/1988/ii880851.html

If what you're saying is true about the White Sox putting up $600-$700 million, I would think the deal will get done.

I literally can't tell. They haven't put out anything that justifies or supports any number. They could be asking for the full $1 billion, no idea.

Then there is the land he owns by the current GR.  What becomes of that?  I think that is what the city and state want.

I do not believe Reinsdorf owns this land. However, I do think that they had this as part of their proposal that they outlined when they released the renderings, they noted that this land could go back to the city for Redevelopment - either a different sports venue with logistics already built up, or alternatively redeveloped to be part of Bridgeport (housing, businesses, etc.)

So, when the Bears go begging Springfield with their new stadiums public financing ask, will the media outrage be as great as it is with Reinsdorf or will the media sugar coat it.

Depends on how much they ask for, from who, and where the money is going to come from.

It was the whole deliberately playing at 75-85% effort that caused the problems.

Same debate as that not going all-out in the NBA All-Star games and playing conservatively or hesitantly might even lead to more injuries…although that would be incredibly difficulty to quantify.

Oh no there were many, many, many things that caused problems.

So a man who wants no information on his team or activities out there leaked that he is asking for a billion dollars because why?

There’s your answer, he knew it would leak this week anyway so he was hoping it would be a non story by Monday.

Assume he’s an out of touch businessman stuck in the 80s and surrounded by yes men. He doesn’t believe the public can help him, he only wants every cent he can get, and. He expects to bully the state government into caving with threats of leaving like he did last time. So we play the 6 months ago charade or meeting with Nashville for leverage, we put together a plan with some positives, but we don’t do our homework or try to get the public on board at all because they don’t matter. We will threaten to leave and they will cave. You leak stuff like this on a Friday so that it’s a non story by Monday, after all it appeared in the Saturday paper and that’s how people get their news.

Fits as a nice version of events to me.

I don't disagree. But until it's official no one with any authority is going to comment. There is just advantage to it.

There's a big advantage to getting out in front of this and giving people who think this is a good project what we need to make a case for it. I'll do the work, I'm excited for the concept, I understand that this is how big projects get done to grow modern cities, but I can't defend $500 million or $1 billion unless I actually know what number I'm defending and where it came from.

The key there is if they come up with it through reasonable means. These are just leaked numbers nothing official and there are people all over the place.

They can't explain how the numbers were reasonably or unreasonably reached until the numbers are finalized. Nothing has been officially announced so the numbers out there are speculation.

Once the final numbers are out there then you can reasonably decided if they should go to Nashville. But until then it's speculation.

It's not clear who leaked it...but if someone were trying to kill this project, they wouldn't' leak it at 4:00 on a Friday. They'd leak it on a Tuesday, for maximum press coverage.

  18. 46 minutes ago, ptatc said:

Why would they report what's going on in the middle of negotiations? I don't see how it benefits anyone to reveal the numbers until something is finalized.

If the current prospective contributions of the Sox are lower than than the final deal everyone here will have added info to crucify the evil billionaire. Not something the Sox want.

The number is out there. There are articles being written saying "not one damn penny". I'm sure sports radio in Chicago has had this today. I don't care how broken democracy is, if there's a strong, negative response from the constituents, money does not get spent on a project like this.

Being upfront and open will help get people on board. If they came up with a number through a reasonable means, tell us what that number is and why giving it to them is a good deal for the city.

If they didn't come up with that number by reasonable means, and they can't justify it, then those who say "Nashville is that way" are correct.

That doesn't make any sense. That would mean they only need $500mm for the park, which we all know won't come close.

A $500 million ask would mean that the White Sox would be putting up probably the other $600-$700 million cost of the park.

This would be more reasonable and plausible than the city paying a full $1 billion for the park and the White Sox chipping in like $100-$200 million or whatever.

This is also why the White Sox should be out in front of this, because if we're not understanding things correctly, it benefits them to make everyone understand the numbers!

    What a steal. wow.

That's basically a 1 year, $10 million deal for a reliever coming off TJS. That's pretty decent money for a guy when you don't know what you'll get from the guy.
