Will the Sox prioritize Moncada over youngsters?
Balta1701 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
“Everything” with Kopech? I think a much smarter organization sending him to AAA in 2021 and then stretching his arm out to start would have been the biggest change possible in his career and that set of ludicrous decisions isn’t on him. -

Moncada was the number 1 overall prospect though when acquired. Those guys are Trout, Ohtani, Harper, Rutchsman. Those guys aren’t supposed to wash out after about 10 career WAR. -
With him not having that much control remaining, taking anything for him isn’t a bad move. There’s a substantial risk the White Sox would nontender him even after a good second half. Kopech for Vargas makes sense, you get something for him that has multiple years of control that the Dodgers don’t need. Frankly that’s basically the deal the Dodgers got.

Sizemore was SO FAR DOWN THE LINE that this still works as a springboard for him. He was literally on a $15 an hour internship with the D-Backs last season that he had to talk himself into, if he parleys this into a minor league manager position for a couple years or a base coach slot for some other team, that's a pretty solid move forward. You could literally think of him actually managing again in 5 or 10 years and no one would remember this, all he'd have to say in an interview was give it as an example of how a GM and manager should not work.

I recall people scoffing at me last year when I said that if Getz was smart at all he would turn this job down. Now a year later he’s the personal laughingstock of the league. An Ohio congressman who covered up sexual abuse of wrestlers is scoring points by dunking on his team online. He’s the guy being quoted in the Onion. He will have a couple years of employment if Reinsdorf is alive, but if either Reinsdorf passes or he gets tired of 100 loss seasons Getz will never work in an MLB front office again. His reputation is in the Reinsdorf and this is the end of his management career.

Will the Sox prioritize Moncada over youngsters?

The young guys will be on the bench so that Sheets and Lopez can play. -
The upside for the White Sox is that they have almost no money on the books next year, and most of the arbitration guys and options they have are guys that will be cut loose. I could easily see them being at $50 million in 2025 committed payroll on November 15. If they want to run their payroll at $75 million, they're going to do another season like last year of finding "leadership" and "domestic abusers" because there's not many ways to spend only $25 million while fielding a decent roster. If they're willing to push back to a $100 million payroll there's room to think about adding someone significant. They might find a Fedde type, but I kinda doubt they would look to spend >$10 million a year for multiple years on a pitcher as they. have a lot of young arms and at least a few will be coming up next year. As a mostly DH, Santander seems like the kind of guy the White Sox would sign to decent money, although I might not think it wise. Maybe a Teoscar Hernandez as well. There's not a lot on the FA market though, so who knows how this will go.

They kept them on through the trade deadline and didn't replace them beforehand, so they valued their feedback enough to keep paying them.

Will the Sox prioritize Moncada over youngsters?

They’ve also been a place where numerous guys have complained about the expectation to play through injuries and still others have kept their mouths shut when they could have spoken up (I swear to god my phone corrected shut to Luis while I was typing that last phrase). We’ve also gotten a very strong impression that guys get frustrated with the coaching style, game plans, and lack of information that they receive compared to other team. -

While improving things like advanced scouting or training techniques might help, that's never going to be anything that someone decides a contract on unless the contract offer is already competitive. For all we know it might have contributed to a decision by someone like Wheeler to go elsewhere, but there are very few times the White Sox or any team lose out on a player while making a strong, league-leading offer. If you don't bid on an Ohtani or a Soto you will not sign them, and this team is no where near bidding for those players nor are they seemingly interested in doing so. Could I imagine a scenario where Alex Bregman or someone like that doesn't get the contract he wants, hangs out until the end of the offseason unsigned, gets an offer from the White Sox, and turns it down to take less money for a year literally anywhere else? Yeah I can, so the general awfulness of the franchise could play into that setup if it happened. The White Sox really didn't try for any of those type of guys last year though, they went to San Francisco. -
So if I’m doing this right, he was +8 DRS in his first 107 innings and +2 in his next 102 innings? With it having been 0 until the Tuesday and Wednesday games?

Wait what?

Note that everything here is the stuff that Billy Beane complained about in Moneyball. "Look how short he is to the baseball, you see a guy taking a good swing on the ball, you're working from your notes you're working from your memory and that's where the video helps, how hard of a worker is he, how does he overcome adversity." They never talk about guys being intelligent, they never talk about guys approach at the plate, they never talk about how guys have different positional value, no one has ever mentioned statistics translating, no one is actually taking any data from their performance and interpreting anything based on these hundreds of independent scenarios, it's 100% classic scouting. Guy writes a report and it gets filed somewhere so they decide their draft based on that. They have more video, and they can file their reports electronically, but there's no Paul DePodesta in the room saying "He gets on base" every time he's pointed at.

Has anyone mentioned yet that one of the reasons why Vargas might be struggling even more, and one reason why he might be extra concerned, is that he went from an organization where he asks for help and gets "here's our 400 page textbook on this pitcher, would you like to spend 3 hours in our virtual reality simulator seeing his pitches" as a reply, to an organization where he asks for help and gets "We think this guy might throw a fastball you should be ready for that" as a reply?

Before the pandemic as in the mid-2000s, yes, I believe that. By 2015, not even close.
-
Yeah, I can't think of any reason why the White Sox in 2024 would have their fans being selectively miserable. Buck up, nothing unusual happening to this team right now.
-
The GM doesn't have the authority to choose the people who work beneath him, and this is supposed to make White Sox fans feel confident in their GM.
-
With the defense the White Sox have seen from him so far?

Chris Getz should have to date Mike Clevinger.

There are 30 managerial jobs. There are far more than 30 qualified managers who would take a job like this. Even losing for 2 years and being fired, it’s good money and can be a stepping stone to a better job (the AJ Hinch path). There are not more than 30 qualified manager candidates who will tell Jerry Reinsdorf and Domestic Violence Enthusiast Christ Getz that they're doing a great job and nothing needs to change. There are likely zero.
