  1. Which is of course why Ichiro is on his way here next year...familiarity!
  2. I read the title of this thread, and thought..."That's the answer...tetrahydrogestrinone!"
  3. QUOTE(dasox24 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 07:30 PM) The D-Rays should have never gotten Kazmir for a guy like Zambrano, but I agree with everything you say. In fact, in another thread, I said I would prefer a package of something like Pelfrey, Humber, and a young OF like Fernando Martinez for Buehrle if we traded with the Mets, for example. Or something similar from another team. I can't imagine any team giving up that much.
  4. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 04:48 PM) Again, I have no disagreement with this argument. My concern is forming of the perception of "Fast Kenny" dumping tired and broken pitchers on teams. So if KW tries to shop Jose this winter, I suspect he need not even call Philly. Even though Philly should have ordered the physical, the Philly GM can try and go to the press make KW look bad/get sympathy because he got a broken Freddy Garcia. If the networks like say ...ESPN, run with it, it could damage our ability to trade in the future. I think the first line of the ESPN piece sums things up well:
  5. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 12:06 PM) Remind me not to go swimming in that area... Earth?
  6. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 01:03 PM) So, we know now why KW jumped at the phils offer. He was probably going to deal him to the first team that wouldnt do a physical before the trade. As soon as the Phils said they wouldnt, he pulled the trigger. The more time that passes, the more happy I am with what we got out of this deal, especially now that Floyd may be showing the occasional sign of life.
  7. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 11:54 AM) It would be asinine to trade Dye for anything less then 2 good prospects/young ML players because it is a guarante that we get the 2 draft picks in free agency anyway. Unless you get 1 really, really good player.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 11:35 AM) Well lets think about this: If we can swing for another just about ready for the bigs SP like Danks/Gio. We could swing some of that saved cash, deal one of our other starters and big an even bigger splash this upcoming offseason. If we could keep Buehrle, insert either Gio or another young guy into the rotation and take some of Dye, Gooch, etc's sal to land maybe Ichiro or something like that, we keep fans, get younger and move forward. I hate to say it, but if we're swinging a deal for someone, I really don't want us to swing a deal for starting pitching unless we're moving someone like Vazquez, Contreras, or Garland in the deal. Amazingly, I think we're holding our own pretty well on young pitching. Danks, Gio, Russell, Broadway and maybe something salvageable out of Floyd and Haeger give us at least 3-4 good young pitchers who can/should be in the rotation within 2 years, and maybe you throw in something useful in 3 years out of this draft like Poreda, and we may well have enough starting pitching talent to survive even if a couple guys blow up. We need position players. Desperately. We need 2 infielders and at least 1 OF, if not 2-3, and another decent catcher/1b wouldn't be a bad thing in a year or two.
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 11:24 AM) Yep, the 2005 and 2006 team were World Series caliber teams. This year, it's just not. That's fine though....as many have pointed out, most teams would do anything for two straight 90 win seasons. Admitting that this team just lacks "it" this season doesn't diminish what KW and Ozzie and company achieved the last few years. We've been destroyed by the injury bug this year....and that's after seemingly a 5 year span where we had fewer injuries than anyone (besides Frank). That Ordonez injury in 04 was murder on that season as well, although it probably helped us win a title. It also cost us a couple draft picks.
  10. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 05:45 AM) If you really want to get Ichiro, I think you keep Iguchi around, although I would peg our chances at getting Ichiro at about 10-15%, because KW will point to the decreasing attendance and expected lack of season ticket renewals and say that he can't go out and spend money he doesn't have. I think Kenny's smart enough to know that getting Ichiro alone would bring back revenue to nearly pay for the signing in terms of ticket sales and added media exposure. Seattle's seen the same thing for years. The problem is...right now, the Sox look like they're pretty much screwed for a year or two, with a couple major OF holes, a couple rookies being forced into service, a weak bullpen, and a couple of vets about to walk. In other words...if Mr. Ichiro were to look at this team now, he might think that it resembles a lot the 2003 Seattle Mariners; coming off a couple of really good years, but also looking over the cliff at a couple of really down years. And I really doubt Ichiro wants to go to a team he thinks may struggle to remain competitive for his last few good years.
  11. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 09:29 AM) Plus think of it this way, what better way to sell a firesale than by moving Dye and Contreras yet in the process giving Buehrle a 5 year deal worth a minimum of 70 million. Jose continues to have a full no trade clause this season.
  12. God, if Eaton can shut us out...I'm just terrified to think what Hamels can do.
  13. If Jerry Owens could hit .300 and take a few walks, with his speed, I would have no problem at all with him manning a corner OF spot. He fills a need, and with the talent we have at say, DH, we can sacrifice a few HR's to put some balance into the lineup. Unfortunately, Owens has shown nothing so far that suggests he'll be able to turn into a .300 hitting slap hitter like we need him to.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) Since when have you been in a position to criticize other people saying negative stuff? I even admitted later on that I hadn't seen the article....I just wanted to make sure that Ichiro wasn't referring to the cold....you know, since people have already started to pencil him into the lineup. EDIT: We know very little about what Ichiro is looking for in terms of his next team. We do know that he's looking for a team that can compete for the World Series next year. Between our likely .500 or so record this year, and him complaining about the cold, I didn't think it was a good sign for us. That's all....not much more to it. I don't think we'll get him next year, as he's going to get a ton of money and we'd be better off trying to get someone younger and save some of the money to upgrade in other positions like SS. Yeah, at this point, it's starting to look difficult to believe that Mr. Ichiro will be that interested in Chicago's AL team, given the draft position we'll be looking @ next year and the fact that Buehrle, Dye, and Iguchi are probably not long for this side of the city.
  15. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 08:03 PM) hey balta...do you have any idea about whether iguchi will be type A also? its an interesting thing to consider... i mean i would love to trade buerhle this year (mainly cuz i believe he will bring back 2 major league calibur prospects) and keep iguchi and dye and get 2 first rounders and 2 sandwich picks for them...that way we get some young players ready to contribute in the next year or two for buerhle, that hopefully woul be sure things, and some young players for later down the road in 09 and 10 It's really difficult to know whether Iguchi will be type A...because only the %age of free agents who get compensation matters, and to know that, we need to know how many really good FA's there are who actually leave their teams. For example, if Ichiro winds up staying in Seattle, Big Z stays in CHC, and Dye stays with whoever we trade him to, then those guys are removed from the list of possible type A free agents. Last year, here's what the list looked like for 2nd basemen, for comparison.
  16. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 04:29 PM) I agree -- Dye & Cintron for Betemit would be fine with me. I doubt the Sox could do better by waiting. IMO, that's just a terrible return for Dye. I'd much rather have the 2 draft picks. And yes, we get 2 picks if someone signs JD: his performance last year counts when they determine whether he's an A level FA or not.
  17. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 11:07 AM) Better than Vladdy? In 06, yes, by quite a bit too. 1.007 OPS last year for JD, .934 for Vlad.
  18. QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) I wouldnt call them "ok" starts. 2 ER in his last 15 innings. Thats pretty good. Is he on his way I dont know, but his last two starts we're far from just "ok". I would say his numbers for the past 4 starts actually haven't been too shabby. Date OPP W L SV IP H ER BB SO May 26 OTT 1 0 0 6.0 7 2 1 5 May 31 LOU 1 0 0 6.1 7 4 2 6 Jun 05 @LOU 0 0 0 8.0 7 1 0 6 Jun 10 IND 1 0 0 7.0 5 1 3 8 6+ in each game, WHIP around 1.17, worst start gives up 4 runs, 5+ k's per game, etc. I think that's basically his numbers since recovering from that little blister issue he had a while back, IIRC.
  19. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 08:44 AM) I guess other bad teams can hit an 87 mph straight fastball after all. I refuse to believe that's possible.
  20. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 06:16 AM) Yeah, it was ridiculous. At first he just warned both teams, then after Renteria was walking up the baseline he turned around and threw Lily out. It was really poor umpiring Given that there's been a bean-ball fest in that series though, I really can't say I blame him. If I were him, I would have passed along a message when the managers came out to hand out their lineup cards.
  21. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 08:34 AM) terrero and gonzalez looked awesome yesterday. gonzalaz is huge, is he a big time spect or just crap? Minor League Totals - 6 Season(s): .262 .354 .361 715, 29 home runs, 66/101 in Stolen bases.
  22. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 08:31 AM) I think people are crazily overestimating Jermaine Dye's value. He can't run and his OBP is below .300. He's shown some power this year, but that's all he brings to the table right now. There are a lot of guys that will be on the market with at least that skill set, and maybe more. The Reds alone will likely be trading Dunn and/or Griffey both of whom are more attractive. The Sox won't get either Billingsley or Broxton straight-up for Dye. They might be able to get Betemit for Dye, but that's it. I think people are going to very disappointed in what the Sox firesale brings back. In that case, take the 2 draft picks, end of discussion.
