  1. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 09:24 PM) How about Buehrle and MacDougal for Saltalamcchia and Yunel Escobar? Probably not enough to get it done, and I don't really know what to make of Escobar. I just know that ATL would probably be willing to trade him with Renterria/Lillibridge and another 18 yo SS that they really love. Salty they want to leverage for a real need, but with Smoltz, Hudson, and Gonzalez hurt, Buehrle will be the best starter available and MacDougal has good stuff. Stark
  2. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 03:22 PM) 1. Delmon Young, of, Devil Rays 2. Justin Upton, ss, Diamondbacks 3. Brandon Wood, ss, Angels 4. Jeremy Hermida, of, Marlins 5. Stephen Drew, ss, Diamondbacks 6. Francisco Liriano, lhp, Twins 7. Chad Billingsley, rhp, Dodgers 8. Justin Verlander, rhp, Tigers 9. Lastings Milledge, of, Mets 10. Matt Cain, rhp, Giants Like I said a lil' while ago...the Dodgers appear to have soured quite a bit on Chad compared to the time that list came out. He just hasn't developed as rapidly in terms of throwing strikes as they hoped. Last year he averaged about a walk every 2 innings or less it looks like...which had him coming out in the 5th inning of most games. If we get him, we're getting him on the "Coop will fix him" grounds, even though he's not in the territory of Floyd, he's no longer a #7 in all of baseball prospect kind of guy.
  3. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 03:01 PM) dodgers desperately need some 3b help. If only crede were healthy you could work out a blockbuster with him and dye to LA. While they do need help @ that spot, it's also worth noting that I believe they have one of the better/best 3b prospects in baseball right now (Laroche), and they may well decide they just don't want to block him for a year and a half. The Dodgers have soured on Billingsly somewhat in the past year. A year and a half ago they wouldn't have traded him for the moon, now he's probably actually available, and he may well be someone Cooper could do some good with; his big problem when he came up as a starter was he'd fall behind way too many batters and throw 110 pitches in 5 innings. Broxton also has a good arm, which KW may like. The one thing I will say is...if we're trading Dye for something like this...a solid bullpen arm and another potentially starting arm...the one thing I want to make sure we do is get at least 2 pieces back for him. Because we'll get 2 draft picks for him if we trade him. Don't just give me Dye for 1 of the guys, give me 2 pieces unless you're getting something really, really, really great back.
  4. And a hearty Congrats to Mark Buehrle. Well done sir. 14 more years of this and you'll be @ 300. Go get em.
  5. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) What happened to all that talk from the end of last year about trading Vazquez and keeping Garcia because "he was our best starter down the stretch"? Do you still want Vazquez?
  6. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) If there was some actual dependable power in the lineup outside of Thome, Konerko, and maybe Pierzynski, it'd be interesting. As is, you're looking at a lineup with the potential to have 4 or maybe 5 starting players put up OPS's of under .700. Add to it that the team might not slug .400 as a team, and I think I'd rather sign Cecil Fielder and put him at 2B than go out there with that lineup. I see that lineup struggling to put up 700 runs. Well, Terrero does so far have an OPS of nearly .900
  7. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) Arguing with the ump, hitting his bat on homeplate, then throwing his helmet. And I believe the throw was in the general direction of the umpire (although not @ him directly)
  8. Link (Is probably a low-alcohol beer, but still...)
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 12:40 PM) Um yeah, Carlos Lee was a true All-Star that season seeing as how the players and coaches voted him in. Podsednik was voted in after the fact by a fan base that seems to love the "Final Man" ballot. 1st half of 2005: Damon: .343/.386/.473/.859 Podsednik: .294/.369/.344/.713 Brian Roberts: .345/.416/.591/1.007 There are others but 2 should be enough. I love cherry picking stats. You'll note how you didn't post Podsednik's dominant pre-05 injury SB numbers (remember that 22 straight streak he had right before the break? Anyone else remember how he almost single handedly broke Cleveland's back on the basepaths right after the break?) And on the other side, Lee was, IIRC, leading the NL in RBI's for much of the first half of 05. Both teams got what they needed out of that deal, I think both of those guys deserved to be all-stars, and let's just leave it at that.
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 12:16 PM) Then who pray tell are some of the better defensive shortstops in baseball? And for God's sake please don't say Jeter...
  11. Lotta stuff via Stark. Lot more rumor-mongering @ the link.
  12. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) Oh yeah... I think were going to give that baseball prospectus record a run for its money this year. So, who projects to be @ the top of next year's draft?
  13. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 09:10 PM) It's pretty incredible to be outspent by the Detroit Tigers, of all teams, for our own player in Magglio Ordonez, as well as Porcello. Not to mention they have Verlander, Bonderman and Andr. Miller. If you were just to forecast the teams with the best future in our division, you have to figure the Tigers would be up there at #1, despite their aging everyday line-up (Magglio, Guillen, Sheffield, Polanco, Casey, Monroe, I-Rod...I think all of those guys are in their 30's or above). How in the world can people still legitimately complain about the Tigers spending more on Ordonez than us? Letting Magglio walk turned out to be perhaps the best decision in White Sox history.
  14. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 08:51 PM) Scary bad. And scarier defensively. Is Eckstein really an upgrade over Iguchi? Right now, yes, and by a surprisingly large amount. Compared to last year's Iguchi, probably not, but Tad seems to have fallen off whatever cliff Ozzie drove the team off of.
  15. Wow...You walk away from a 1-1 game in the 7th inning and get this. Maybe we should be drafting relief pitchers in the first round.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:07 PM) Yeah, didn't know that. I had heard that his splits were big this year, so I figured it was the other way around. Lefties are now hitting .350 against Myers this year. 14/40, with 3 home runs.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:06 PM) Do what you do best, and hit into a 4-6-3. I would be shockingly happy with that.
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:02 PM) If they're bringing in the lefty here, Ozzie should let Hall bat. Lefties are actually hitting .333 off of Myers this season according to Gameday. Which is of course...taunting me tonight, so that could be slightly off.
  19. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:01 PM) According to USA Today, the Sox are 10th amongst all MLB teams for highest % of players to make the big leagues within being drated of the first 5 rounds. I fully believe that data. I also wonder what happens when you start applying additional filters, like %'age of a team's draftees who make the AS game. The Sox have drafted a ton, at least to my eyes, of ok-level major leaguers in the first few rounds, like the guys you cite, but I'm having difficulty remembering many folks we drafted early and developed who turned into legit stars who could carry a team (guys like Buehrles and BMac coming late in drafts)
  20. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 06:53 PM) Can someone please explain to me why we're drafting all pitchers when we need about 4-5 positions on the field to be replaced? Is KW planning to trade all of his pitching prospects to fill needs? Well, that's one way to go about it...as pitchers are the most valuable components of any organization, just not sure I agree with that philosophy or not. I think the answer to why we're drafting pitchers has a lot to do with things like the contracts for Matsuzaka, Zito, Meche, Lilly, Schmidt, and so forth from last season. After another year of jumping, the price for a guy who plays 1 out of every 5 days has gone up to the same level as that of a person who plays every day and challenges for the MVP award. There is just such a demand for pitching on the FA market that it seems impossible these days to actually build a competitive team if you're stuck having to buy pitchers. I think it's a lot easier to find either reasonably priced performers or even bargains if you're hunting over the position players, and I think a position player is a lot more likely to earn $15 mil a year and stay healthy over the course of a contract (depending on age) than a pitcher.
