  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:00 PM) From what I read, he said they were open for business in regards to trading another starter. I for one don't have a problem with the concept of trading another starter, and I've been saying that for weeks, given this market.
  2. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:57 PM) He asked Williams point blank. And the Williams response was that the Sox are still open for business, not that they don't intend to resign Buehrle.
  3. Well, It's not the best deal I could have hoped for, but it's at least not the worst either. So where exactly did that Phil Rogers article get the quote from KW that says he's not going to resign anyone? Or is that just something Rogers is inferring (which, as far as I can tell, is the truth).
  4. QUOTE(shoota @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 05:46 PM) Looking deeper into the statistics, there was a stretch right around the All-Star break when Anderson hit well over .300 after hitting below .200 the entire season. At that time, it was reasonable to wonder if the rookie had started his expected rise to become a good major league hitter. He was certainly on his way. After hitting .313 in July, he continued his improved hitting by posting a .296 average in August. Despite those ample improvements, his manager still continued to start Mackowiak over Anderson. It's rumored Ozzie isn't too fond of Anderson (justified or not), and I wonder if Ozzie's personal approach with BA temporarily retarded his growth and ignited BA's end-of-season hitting slump. And beyond that, all season, including the parts where he did stink, Anderson was a much better hitter against righties than against lefties (as was Mackowiak for the 1st part of the season). But even when Anderson did begin to improve, Ozzie Guillen would throw Mack out in Center probably a majority of the time when we were facing a right hander, especially in key games, and Anderson always wound up with the lefty, except in 1 game, in which we faced Santana, and of course, Mack's defense in CF helped cost us the game. But I'm getting sidetracked. The point is, Anderson was a better hitter against righties all year, and Ozzie Guillen felt the need to play Mack in CF over Anderson against such dominant pitchers as Carlos Silva, Bruce Chen, Vicente Padilla, and a few who were even worse. And in almost every one of those games, Mack's defense led to runs scoring for the opposition.
  5. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 05:48 PM) Well Balta, I suppose I think you have a somewhat more realistic way of looking at our player's value than most... Not sure if I missed it...would you do this Buehrle deal for Young? From the White Sox side? I make them add in a pitching prospect (Danks-level) and have the Sox hold onto Podsednik, maybe more. From Texas's side? I figure if KW is that stupid, I try to bargain for an A ball pitcher or two just to see if he'll bite, but I jump at it.
  6. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 05:37 PM) Knowing that Zito would walk in a year? Knowing that I could hold Zito and get draft picks for him, or that I could make an effort to sign him, or that I could deal him midseason, and considering the fact that Zito's overall value is so ungodly much higher than Crede, yes, I absolutely make that deal, and getting another OF that I could move somewhere else or fill a hole would just be icing on the cake.
  7. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 05:01 PM) Well, let's ask ourselves this question.... If Barry Zito were still with the A's, and was a FA after 2007' instead of this year, would you be in favor of a deal sending Joe Crede to the A's for Zito and Jay Payton? In that hypothetical, I'd make that deal in a fraction of a second.
  8. QUOTE(bmags @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 04:55 PM) can we impeach you after we elect you? We'd need to elect a house and a senate to pull that off. No my friend, a recall election is where it's at. Do we have any steroid-abusing Austrians who post here?
  9. 1 year, $8.5 mil for Piazza. I'm sorry, but I think the A's just got a lot worse compared to the monster they had at DH last year. That' what, $500k less than Thomas will be making? And all they had to do was commit to another year. Anyway, the good news is, this is one less place for Barry Bonds to bring his black cloud.
  10. QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) We are overvaluing our own players. Im pretty sure that Texas fans would laugh at the notion of Danks and Young for rent-a-Buerhle. Then let them laugh as they shell out $100m for Zito or miss the playoffs again.
  11. Jake Delhomme has ligament damage in his thumb and is listed as questionable for this weekend's game (but ESPN says they don't expect him to play). He injured the thumb in the first quarter of the game Monday night but played through it.
  12. QUOTE(daa84 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 04:23 PM) a guy with the upside of harden.....which we dont have Mark Buehrle (yeah, he's older and therefore more expensive, but he also has a much better history of health). QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) It would be completely pointless to trade a starter and not make a net gain on our current team. The Sox aren't going to pay $4.5 million for Uribe to be a super sub, and Uribe doesn't have much trade value to begin with. Young has a career .335 OBP batting #1, regardless, he hasn't led off in a game since 2004. I will remain skeptical of Young until his consistently improves his road numbers. He had a great 2005, and I wouldn't mind having him over Uribe, but I'm certainly not going to trade Buehrle + another major leaguer (Yes, I know it's Pods) to conduct the experiment. Buehrle has a much greater value than Young. But that doesn't mean that one of our favorite pitchers, i.e. Danks, couldn't be attached by Texas to sweeten the deal. And there better be something else attached if Buehrles were to go. Young would also to my eyes be an absolutely ideal #2 hitter, and while his defense at SS isn't anything to write home about, I believe he also does have the ability to play 2nd base, and the White Sox have a 2nd baseman who just happens to be a Free Agent at the end of 2007. If we're stuck with Podsednik at the top of the order, Podsednik/Young > Podsednik/Iguchi.
  13. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) I asked you before, but didn't get an answer. If Piazza is the right handed DH, AJ (who is worse than Thome against LHP) catches leaving us weaker in the lineup. God forbid AJ were to go down in the game, Piazza would move from DH and the pitcher would bat. Obviously not the best option, but for 1 game due to an injury it could have been tolerable. But anyway, doesn't look like it'll be happening, so oh well.
  14. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 03:44 PM) Not calling you out or anything, but Taveras seems to be a very popular name when talking about Houston, and he might be the most similar players to Pods in the league. For as much venom as the "Pods Re-signed" thread had, I'm just surprised so many people seem to have interest in him. The Devil you know vs. the Devil you don't know.
  15. Someone will probably give these their own threads shortly, but I'll stick them here first. Bengie Molina to the Giants for 3 years, $16 million, to replace Mike Matheney who may never catch again. Mike Lieberthal signs with the Dodgers as a backup to Russel Martin. Joe Borowski signs with the Tribe.
  16. QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 03:23 PM) What if he gets another agent ala Uribe? KW: See Joe... I'm a man of my word. Rowand's back. If Joe were to get another agent, I would consider that a worthy enough step. (Rowand is a FA after 2007 btw).
  17. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) One step closer to live on mars....yessss, my land purchase on ebay is looking more and more valuable I bought one of those deeds at a star trek convention like 10 years ago. Anyway, still call me skeptical at this point. Pictures are one thing, especially when coming from the MOC, which is a pretty low resolution. There are probably a bunch of ways that one could make sediment appear to change color during a 5 year period without actually having water flowing at the surface, and it would certainly be an interesting process to get it to flow downhill without rapidly freezing and then sublimating. Anyway, this'll be a great place to see what the camera on the MRO can do.
  18. There were actually one or two whispers that this Soriano might have been involved in a deal for the other Ramirez
  19. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) I know they are friends... but im sure Crede isnt just going to resign because he can play with Rowand. If he had any other agent I'd think it were a possibility.
  20. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 02:26 PM) Oh god, Carl was probably the worst cf of all time coming in on balls, it was horrendous. EDIT: As far as Brian and Mack, they were basically the same offensive player in the 2nd half, you add in the defensive problems of Mack and you realize how ridiculous it was for Mack to be playing so many games out there. Rob Mackowiak, post all star: .258 .307 .398 .705 Brian Anderson, post all star: .257 .301 .393 .694 Rob Mackowiak, by month: August .250 .318 .350 .668 September .194 .235 .355 .590 Brian Anderson by month: August 296 .367 .437 .804 September 200 .235 .323 .558
  21. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:26 PM) He's referring to the one VP debate in 2004, between Edwards and Cheney. Edwards tried to make a bridge comment and brought up Cheney's daughter, but it didn't go over well with everyone. Actually, both Senator Edwards and Senator Kerry tried to bring it up in the Debates, Sen. Edwards while sitting across from the Vice President, provoking Mr. Cheney to thank him for the kind remarks about his family and say nothing more. When Gay Marriage was brought up in the 3rd Presidential debate, Mr. Kerry's first words were to bring up the VP's daughter, provoking Lynne Cheney to give a press conference saying "This is not a good man" for trying to use his daughter as a campaign issue. Yeah it was sleazy, by both of them. I rank it at just the same level of sleaze as the hate amendments themselves.
  22. Linkity. Sad. I thought Piazza might make a decent option for the White Sox as a backup Right handed catcher/DH.
  23. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 12:12 PM) this is about 1 year too late. Anderson, do good next year so we don't have to see Mack in the outfield. Mack in the Outfield is fine. Mack in CF is not.
