  1. QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Nov 17, 2006 -> 09:27 AM) Put me down for wanting to trade the farm for Andruw Jones. I wouldn't care if it costs McCarthy, BMac, and another mid-level prospect. Andruw Jones is a special player. We've cloned BMac? Well I'll be, trade him twice and keep the 3rd one, I like it!
  2. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 17, 2006 -> 09:25 AM) Santana is not better than Freddy and if he came to the Sox he would be even worse. Look at these splits: 2006 Home: 10-2, 3.02 ERA, 1.10 WHIP 2006 Away: 6-6, 5.95 ERA, 1.40 WHIP Career Home: 19-5. 3.09 ERA, 1.14 WHIP Career Away: 9-11, 6.46 ERA, 1.53 Just some perspective, here's Garcia's numbers at USCF 2006: 4.11 ERA, 1.26 WHIP 2005: 4.38 ERA, 1.39 WHIP 2004: 5.37 ERA, 1.40 WHIP Freddy gets a lot of flack for being "terrible" at home, but Santana's road numbers are much worse than Garcia's numbers at USCF. Just say NO to Santana. He's another one of these guys that ESPN talks up and has splits that tell another story. (See Blalock and Young.) I would take those #'s from a 24 year old who has 2 years of ML Service time and is making the league minimum.
  3. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 17, 2006 -> 09:10 AM) Good news....Levine reports the Sox weren't the team that offered this deal. So, in other words, it was the White Sox?
  4. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:31 PM) Yes he does, but remember he also doesn't like to leave guys in only for 1 batter. Cotts vs Arod...ugh. Even worse than that was Cotts vs. Kevin Mench.
  5. If it costs anything other than McCarthy, I'm game, unless the offer is just insane. Atlanta will want pitching, that I can say with confidence. Problem is of course that Jones got 10-5 rights last season, so he can veto any deal.
  6. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 06:17 PM) So he can't hit well because he doesn't get on base at a great clip? Is that what you're trying to suggest? You don't have to have a good eye to be a good hitter. And it's not like he's old. He's played 3 years while also missing 1 due to injury, and he'll be all of 25 next year. People are declaring Carl Crawford a god among children, yet fail to see how good Baldelli's numbers actually are, and how much time he still has left to develop as a hitter. I for one would only see a problem with Baldelli on the White Sox if it cost the Sox McCarthy to get him, or some other unreasonable amount, which dealing with Tampa sometimes does.
  7. "....which will be a welcome change from our annual 'Do as we say' festival...started by German immigrants in 1946."
  8. QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) Cotts won't be a SP. Not even in the NL. That doesn't mean the Cubs won't try. Or won't be forced to try.
  9. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 05:02 PM) About this Vasquez character; Isn't he eligible for the Rule V draft? It's very possible we could lose him leading to more people flipping out about this trade. Ok, now that would piss me off. Or if we lost someone like Philipps because we were holding onto this guy. But then again, we do still have open 40 man spots.
  10. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 12:12 PM) Once he owns a media company he will become a liberal, they always do As I'm fairly fond of pointing out...Mitt Romney is also the only potential frontrunner for the Repub. nomination who hasn't cheated on his wife. Gingrich, McCain, Giuliani, etc.
  11. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 12:31 PM) I don't know who was feeding Murtha information that he was winning, but he got beat pretty soundly by Hoyer for the #2 job, 149-86. Karl Rove said the Republicans would win based on their ground game until the very end. It's a pretty standard campaign tactic...never admit you're losing.
  12. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 02:49 PM) If, you mean when Mac spends time on the DL. That alone is why I don't want us to have Haeger in our pen. I'd rather have Haeger pitching every 5 days ready in case a starter goes down. The nice thing is...just like last year, where we had a guy at AAA who was almost-ML-ready but not quite, next year, we'll have another guy at AAA who's almost-Major league ready and who is pitching every 5 days, Broadway.
  13. So today, Clear Channel Entertainment, #3 on my list of world's most evil monopolies, was purchased out by a consortium of Thomas H. Lee Partners LP and Bain Capital Partners LLC for about $19 billion. Link. Why is this in the Dems only thread? Because the interesting part of this story is that "Bain Capital Partners LLC" was founded by 3 men in 1984, one of whom, and I believe the key one, happens to be Mitt Romney, current Governor of Massachusetts and presumptive 2008 Candidate for the Republican Presidential Nomination. I guess that's one way to make sure you get good press coverage...buy Clearchannel.
  14. QUOTE(ptatc @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:46 AM) Lefties hit Aardamaa at a .196 clip last year. Maybe he is our option against lefties????? Dude, Ozzie Guillen is still our manager. Lefties could hit .600 off of a lefty pitcher and righties could hit .050 off of him, and Ozzie would still still use that pitcher as a LOOGY.
  15. Wonder if they'll wind up DFAing Shelton.
  16. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:24 AM) Cubs fans also think that Cotts+Cedeno will bring them Westbrook from the tribe. You know, with Cleveland's bullpen...drop Cedeno and stick in another reliever and they might be open to it.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:58 AM) According to my source, this Vasquez guy isn't a prospect at all. So um, what exactly is he? Cyborg?
  18. Why does that response make me think of Mayor Quimby's response to an issue where his method of placating a mob is to appoint a "blue ribbon" committee? (Blue ribbon? Why that's the best you can get!)
  19. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:10 AM) I would like to increase our current benefits for family and early retirement. The money would come from the cuts made in excessive pork barrel legislation. This simply doesn't work. The total amount spent in all earmarks in 2005 was $47 billion dollars, and that includes all of them, including I believe many projects that are actually worthy of funding. While this money would be useful if it were saved in the lockbox where it should be, it is no where near enough to significantly increase funding for Social Security. It's not even close to enough money just to pay for the White House's proposed Social Security private accounts plan. So the question deserves to be asked again...more specifically than just saying "cutting pork", give us examples of where you're going to cut spending, and how those spending cuts are enough to offset the price tag, which would certainly be in the $100's of billions per year, of lowering the retirement age or increasing benefits.
  20. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:16 AM) I have no reason to think Williams didn't try and find the best possible deal for Cotts, and this is what he found. This is a deal swapping two back end of the bullpen guys. I dont think this tells us where this off-season is going, at all. I think it's a decently strong suggestion that KW isn't that interested in playing the Free Agent market at the prices people are getting. There were probably better options as a righty reliever than Aardsma, but they were going to cost a lot more.
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:16 AM) Logan's offspeed stuff is twice as good as Neal's was. I think that Logan can be much more effective vs LHP than Cotts was. Funky motions also work damn well, if a.) you throw strikes, and b.) you have no one else in your bullpen like that guy. Logan and Haeger fit in pretty well with a group of 4 fireballers just as a change of pace...the key is for them to throw strikes.
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:14 AM) No, not at all. I was one of the first on this site during the season last year that said he would be gone. I just thought that we'd use him as a bigger piece of a trade, and I thought we'd be more active in the FA market than it seems we are. At least so far, the Free Agent market appears to be insanely through the roof, to the point that it's going to be damn hard to find anything that would qualify as a fair deal. That does help this make a bit of sense...if KW decided it was going to be too expensive to find that 2nd righty as a free agent, then you have to make a deal, and with 3 Lefty relievers, one of them seems like a good candidate to move.
  23. QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:13 AM) I have no idea what where getting in return. On that issue, I guess I'll just trust Kenny. I'm quite certain he's earned it. Hopefully, there's at least 1 other man helping KW pick out bullpen decisions. Because the last time he did, it seemed to work damn well.
  24. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:10 AM) Oh yeah -- what does this mean for the Sox bullpen? It could be one of... a.) Haeger doesn't have a lock on that sixth bullpen spot like everybody thinks. b.) The Sox will give their "David Riske" roll to someone within the organization, such as Oneli Perez or Aardsma. Meaning the Sox won't be going after Speier. c.) The Sox go to to a seven man bullpen even though they haven't done this the past two years (I hate this option). I sure think it looks like B. The only way this trade makes sense is to fill that Riske "3rd short relief righty" role well before the season starts. Haeger still fits pretty darn well into that bullpen, because I don't see anyone else whou could be a long man.
  25. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:11 AM) Boone, lol, don't get me started. As of right now, I think it's time to get started with that, because he's our 2nd lefty until other things drop. And it's not like he was bad at AAA last year either. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:11 AM) On the other hand... Vasquez was suspended for roiding. So there's that... Oh great, another pitcher I am obligated to dislike.
