  1. This is the best exit poll ever conceived...
  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 10:13 PM) Because Jim Hendry has naked pictures of someone in the Pirates organization. In all honesty, this would be such a horrendous trade by Colorado. Jason Jennings is a damn good pitcher. He's also a Free Agent in 1 year IIRC, so the Rockies do probably want to get something in return. Doesn't make it a smart deal, but it might fit into their thinking.
  3. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 08:54 AM) If we resign Freddy, I think we could make a move that allows the club to get Pelfrey and Milledge plus one of Humber/Heilman. Buehrle does have that much more value than Freddy/Javier if you ask me and we shouldn't ask for anything less. Remember what he gave up for Bartolo Colon? Now he actually has a team with the resources to trade for an ace and sign that ace to a long term contract (Buehrle or Garcia). If we're giving up Buehrle, I want both Pelfrey and Milledge back.
  4. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 07:33 AM) This one is worse: Possibility: Buehrle to St. Louis for Chris Duncan and RHP Blake Hawksworth As much as I'd love the Sox to get a prospect that plays catcher, Clement won't be able to help the Sox in 2007 and I don't want to see Alomar back there again. Clement's numbers were terrible last year -- was he hurt? Wow, you've found a way to fill that gaping hole the White Sox have at 1st base! Sweet!
  5. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 09:21 PM) How can I have 'evidence' on something that has yet to occur? I expressed an opinion. Interestingly, if you count the VA, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Tax deduction for employer-provided health insurance, it turns out the government is already paying in some way, shape, or form, for 61% of the health care costs in this country. And another 5% is covered through government mandated hospital care for the uninsured.
  6. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 09:23 PM) Any extension would likely come with a limited no trade clause like the ones that Contreras and Garland received on their extensions. It gives them a year or two of stability, but gives the Sox wiggle room at the end of the contract. If it brought down the money or the years, I'd be very willing to make the no-trade clause last longer. Especially on Mark. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 09:26 PM) Well, one thing I thought about with the Carpenter extension was maybe that it was setting a market for Mark more so than anyone else. Maybe something a little smaller, like 5/55, although, I am not personally in favor of such a deal. Mark Buehrle might get $20 million more than that next year if he hits the open market and only signs a 5 year deal. He might get $40 million more than that if he signs a 6 year deal.
  7. Why oh why would you want to be first out of the gate in signing a contract with a pitcher? Chris Carpenter will earn $2 million a year more than Vicente Padilla. God young pitching is so useful.
  8. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 08:42 PM) A thing also about trading for Vernon Wells is that if we don't resign him, we get two draft picks for him, so replacing the prospects is not as hard and JD would be the same way b/c the Sox would undoubtedly offer them arbitration. Just something to think about. But here's the sad thing...we're not the Dodgers or Angels...we don't have 4-5 potential all-stars just about to hit the majors at a variety of positions. A team with a ton of talent just about to reach the pros can afford to let a few people walk and take the draft picks, because they have youth to move in. The White Sox, on the other hand, have a pretty barren system with a few possibles sitting near the top. If the White Sox trade away young talent (the article strongly implies Anderson + more), what the White Sox will wind up with is 2 draft picks in 2008, which will give us players that if we're lucky might hit the big leagues some time around 2012, give or take a few years. Either way, there's a pretty big gap to fill in there. Virtually our entire team aside from Paul Konerko, Jose Contreras, and a few guys in the bullpen will be hitting Free Agency by the end of 2008. If we start trading away the talent we do have, then we're going to wind up with 1/2 of this team walking, and we're simply going to have no choice but to face a few years of rebuilding starting maybe even at the end of 2007 when Buehrle, Dye, Iguchi, Garcia, and potentially others including Podsednik, Vazquez, hit FA. In other words, you're trading for a guy like Vernon Wells with no backup option if he does leave, and if you don't win a trophy next year, you are left with no choice but to start rebuilding from scratch.
  9. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 08:13 PM) If this is so why did Mackowiack play a ton of CF last year? BA will one day be better than Rowand, but as of right now he is not. Because Brian Anderson is a dirty communist, and right handers will strike out 100% of the time when facing rihgt handers and hit home runs 100% of the time against left handers.
  10. QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 05:47 PM) What about Weaver? Ugh, I'm a Cardinals fan, and I don't even know this stuff. I gotta start paying more attention. Last year to start the season Weaver signed a 1 year deal with the Halos, who cut him. He then signed a small contract to finish the year with the Cardinals after Mulder went down. So he's currently a FA, but I think he's out of his mind if he doesn't sign a 1-2 year deal with the Cardinals to try to ressurect his career in a place where he's had success already.
  11. If you only have acrobat reader, then it will be difficult for you to produce your own PDF files. You need the full version of Acrobat, or some other similar Adobe software, to turn files into PDF.
  12. QUOTE(Bbigdogg29 @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 05:39 PM) If the Brewers are willing to dangle Kevin Mench...what do you guys think about him??? First of all, if we play the Cubs, and Cotts is pitching...put him in. But anyway...I just don't see how he solves the club's speed/leadoff type issues. Decent power bat, but we have power covered. Probably pretty poor on defense, and we've already got that. Slow on the bases, and we've got a ton of that.
  13. QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 05:37 PM) Oh, wait. I may have to correct myself. Aren't both Suppand AND Mulder free agents? Yes. Their pitching staff is currently Carpenter, Kip Wells, and presumably Reyes and Wainright until they sign someone else.
  14. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 05:18 PM) Oh, and if you're still on the fence... just remember - I'd vote for you! "...(to music) It's not Rex KickA**'s fault that the stadium collapsed. Vote Rex KickA**. If you were running, he'd vote for you"
  15. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 04:25 PM) As much as everyone here wants to talk about the mashers we had in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 that we didn't win with, the failure was not their fault. The failure was that we never developed any great pitching. Now I understand many of you think Brandon is the first time we have done that, he hasn't shown us that he can be a great young pitcher on any consistent basis. Remember in 2000 and 2001, when we had a top farm system that was stacked with arms? How many of them panned out? What happened to all of them? Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland are wearing nice, shiny rings.
  16. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) Vince Young = Steve McNair II He needs what, 1 more yard?
  17. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 01:50 PM) What the heck is that a statue of? It looks like an alien coal miner. I assume it's a gigantic platinum statue of something commissioned with city money that was supposed to be used for 9/11 recovery under Rudy. But then again, as corrupt as those folks turned out to be...what isn't?
  18. QUOTE(SoxnGiants @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 01:39 PM) I know it's a broken record with Sox fans... but Crawford is the guy we should target. He's exactly what we need. Wells is great but will be really expensive while Crawford is signed long term to a reasonable contract. Yes his contract is reasonable, but that doesn't mean the price is reasonable. A team with 3/4 of its players 2 years or less from Free Agency can simply not empty its minor leagues entirely for 1 guy. If KW learns hypnosis, then it's a smart move. Otherwise...
  19. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 12:21 PM) But does Anderson really have the skills that Crede did, even when he struggled? Yes. If not more. It took Crede some time to develop into the defensive monster we have now, Anderson already is that. Anderson's numbers in the minors are quite comparable to Crede's in his first stops at each level, and I would say BA is a better athlete in general.
  20. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 11:20 AM) This is what I was getting at. I remember reading a Time or Newsweek article on him a while back. Basically it said that he was upsetting people and cited a meeting where everyone was arguing over something trivial and he basically yelled 'why are we wasting our time with this.' I think he shocked the culture that was there and people didn't like that. About 2 weeks ago, a group of Carribbean nations wanted the U.N. to say something to recognize the 200th anniversary of the ending of the Slave Trade. Simple commemorative resolution, the sort of thing that every Parliamentary body does all the time. Guess who created the hangup. John Bolton. Why? As far as I can tell from the copy of the letter he sent, he insisted that the word emphasizing needed to be changed to the emphasis. And for some reason, he decided this was so worthy of a fight that he stopped the whole thing until a bunch of people from the Congress noticed what he was doing and basically told him to stop being a moron.
  21. The Reds are closing in on a 2 year deal with 37 year old reliever David Weathers. Also,The Reds are going to file a grievance over the Gary Majewski trade, claiming that he was already hurt when the Nats traded him. Tanyon Sturtze signed a 1 year deal with the Braves. Kevin Millar, 1 more year with the Orioles. Roberto Hernandez and Aaron Fultz to the Indians. Texas offers arbitration to Padilla.
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 10:24 AM) What if we get back the 2004 version of Rowand? Why shouldn't we think he can accomplish those numbers again? There are three things I like about Rowand more than Anderson: - Ability to hit LHP - Leadership - Ozzie's confidence in Rowand compared to Anderson Rowand's numbers last year vs. LHP: .222 .304 .444 .748, 5 home runs. He hit about half his home runs against lefties, but it was either home run or he gawn.
  23. I think Aaron Rowand has become the White Sox fan's version of cocaine. Yeah, getting rid of him brought a guy who hit 40+ home runs and should hit 500 next year, yeah he spent half last year on the DL, and yeah, his offensive numbers simply aren't good, but PEOPLE JUST CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT HIM AND WILL GIVE UP ANYTHING TO GET MORE OF HIM.
  24. Tom Daschle will not run. Evan Bayh will form an exploratory committee to start raising funds, and will announce his final decision (=yes) in January. Michael Bloomberg is also seriously considering a run as an independent. John Kerry has significantly delayed making a decision about running in 2008, in no small part because of the fallout from his botched joke.
  25. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 09:55 AM) Sure. I guess I just like Rollins too much, because I think he gives us a better lead off hitter and a long term SS who isnt so frustrating to watch hit. Maybe its just me. I agree Rollins would be a nice fit given what we have...but I am not interested in just giving away these pitchers, nor do I want Rowand back that much at all, and I want to give Anderson away when his value is almost at its lowest even less.
