  1. QUOTE(The Critic @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 04:37 PM) Yes he did, and I thought that was very funny. He came off great in the press conference, but we'll see what a couple losing seasons do to him. Didn't we already see that?
  2. Mark Prior saw a doctor yesterday. In other news, I just ate an altoid. Wintergreen. Good stuff.
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 03:27 PM) Ok, that's not even funny. Then, think about what Ozzie would do when there's a lefty on the mound.
  4. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 07:46 AM) I would guess that Lou will at least reconsider ALL of the coaching staff. I am sure that Rothschild will be on the list for Lou to think about possibly removing. Tribune says Rothschild just got a 2 year deal.
  5. I just wish that somehow our team could actually focus on finding a leadoff hitter who actually fits with the makeup of the rest of the team. We have a murderous 3-4-5 with a ton of power. We hit a sh*t load of home runs. Stealing bases in front of those type of guys does not have nearly as high of an impact on run production as simply being on base. It's not a bad thing if you're not thrown out a lot, but it's not going to be the end-all-be-all. If you could find me a LF/SS with an OBP somewhere above .350 or .360, I'd be very happy...and spend the rest of my money on pitching.
  6. Here's the other issue for the Tigers next year; the same issue the White Sox faced in 2006. This division is just going to keep getting better and better and better for the next few years. Cleveland is just loaded with young talent everywhere except their pitching staff. The White Sox pitching collapsed last year and they still won 90 games. And Minnesota has the S & L if they stay healthy. Right now in the AL Central, if you want to win it more than one year, you have to get better in the 2nd year. The White Sox offense got better, but its pitching took a step back, so the team lost ground relative to everyone else. The White Sox's pitching staff will be better next year, and hopefully we'll have a leadoff hitter. It's the Red Queen in the AL Central right now; everyone's running as fast as they can just to stay in the same place.
  7. The Associated Press is reporting that the DOJ/House Page board are now looking into a trip taken in the mid 90's by another member of Congress, Rep. Jim Kolbe. Maybe also worth noting, Rep. Kolbe is the same person who says he first saw some of Foley's electronic communications in 2000.
  8. Here are some more details on the investigation. And Weldon's defense: CREW did in fact file a complaint which seems to have led to this investigation, so he is right on that. Although, CREW does file a ton of complaints, even some about Congressmen and their problems with pages, many of which are not acted on by the DOJ, so it's questionable whether that is important.
  9. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 10:26 PM) I really doubt Dusty would get the A's job. He doesn't really subscribe to the moneyball theory if that makes sense. I don't think he'd be a good fit there. ""walks are no good if all they do is clog the basepaths so the faster guys can't run"
  10. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 08:18 AM) Can Arod steal bases? Because what we need is more speed. ARod was 15/19 in stolen bases last season. In 2004 he was 28/32. He had 46 SB in 1998.
  11. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 06:27 PM) Nuke, Who should lawyers defend? Only the really innocent. Those who the President deems "Non-terrorists". Anyway, if this person did what she's accused of doing...then yeah she crossed the line. By a lot.
  12. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) Correction: his daughter's home. Correction, it was about 6 sites which included his daughter's home, her business partner's home, their offices, and offices related to a Russian energy company they did business with.
  13. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 01:43 PM) When I saw the quotes after game 3 from Chavez and Bradley conceding the series, my first thought was, What the hell kind of a clubhouse allows that? Then you read Melhuse's comments, and you still want to say this is just Beane being an ass? C'mon -- the last thing he wants to do with his budget is waste $2 mil. It sounds like Macha just lost his team. With guys like Milton Bradley and Frank Thomas...they did have a lot of guys who weren't exactly your classic wonderful clubhouse people.
  14. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 01:03 PM) Also starred in the best SC ad ever. Follow me to freedom!
  15. Man, after that whole deal of him leaving and coming back last year, I figured he was there for a while.
  16. QUOTE(whitesox1976 @ Oct 16, 2006 -> 12:25 PM) Last I read, the Sox weren't making any comment on it yet. We may end up with a new shortstop. Uribe and Urbina for ARod...get it done KW.
  17. Linkity. Well, anyone who wants Soriano...are you willing to beat that price by quite a bit?
  18. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Oct 12, 2006 -> 05:52 PM) People wouldn't give up Brandon McCarthy for A-Rod? Wow. This guy better turn out so good that they change the Cy Young Award into the Brandon McCarthy Award. JMO, just another example of people way overrating Brandon McCarthy beyond belief. If it was McCarthy straight up, and there was enough money included in the deal, I'd consider it. But on the other hand, consider this. How good will the $200 million team be when their stockpile of young pitching finally appears? Think about facing this rotation next year: Matsuzaka, Wang, Philip Hughes, Brandon McCarthy, Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, and maybe something resembling the unholy offspring of Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano. Suddenly their starting pitching goes from expensive, old, and broken, to young, fireballing, healthy, cheap, and deep. They've already shown they have enough money to overcome any deficiencies on their offense, but the one place they haven't been able to do it is on their pitching staff, because the older pitchers who get paid the big bucks have a habit of breaking down after a lot of innings. If suddenly the Yankees got themselves a boatload of young pitching at the start of that rotation, which they're already on the verge of doing with Wang, Matsuzaka, and Hughes, then, well think about how the Tigers would have done this year if they had the Yankee offense. Remember, even if we were to get ARod from the Yankees, we still have to beat the Yankees somewhere along the line. Yes, we can help ourselves here, but we shouldn't do it while simultaneously giving the Yankees the one thing they need to be even better: young quality starting pitching.
  19. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Oct 12, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) I figure you watched this on PTI as well. I have to imagine the starting pitcher the Yankees would be asking for is Brandon McCarthy. On that note, no deal. Realistically, we'd have to include him to beat the Angels offer. Not worth it. I'll deal brandon if they give us Hughes back along with ARod.
  20. QUOTE(fullcollapse @ Oct 12, 2006 -> 03:08 PM) i just quickly scanned the last page or so of this thread, so if this was already brought up, sorry for being lazy. what dosage of anabolic steroids is considered abusive? what amount would be considered to be "safe?" and how much steroids would you need to see a significant difference in muscle mass? would a safe amount of steroids cause enough of a difference to really beef someone up? Normally, anabolic steroids are given to some patients to treat certain conditions. I've been put on them before for an asthma attack if I recall correctly (was like 3rd grade). The doses that athletes take in order to increase muscle mass are generally 10 to 100 times the doses prescribed by doctors for actual treatment. Athletes will also often combine multiple steroids, or will combine steroids and something like HGH (as Bonds did), because the different chemicals may affect the body in different ways. Generally, anything taken outside the supervision of a doctor would be described as abuse by the law, so even small amounts would qualify if not done with a doctor's approval, and with athletes, we're talking about orders of magnitude larger doses.
  21. So, I get the feeling I'm just going to be throwing gas on a fire here, but since I'll be in Death Valley all weekend, why not, I'll be hot enough anyway. The new Chief of the General Staff in the United Kingdom (he took over the position in August) had what I would only call startling words about the Iraq war, at least coming from such a high ranking official who still actually holds an influential position in one of the 2 governments running the Iraq debacle. Linkity.
  22. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Oct 12, 2006 -> 02:28 PM) Hey SoxPride56 I like your lineup; my only beef is: do we want the Brian Anderson experiment back? I'm not sure I can live through another season with the nine hole. 100% absolutely. His defense alone makes him worth putting in the 9 hole, as long as someone amputates one of Rob Mackowiak's legs so Ozzie doesn't decide to platoon them.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 12, 2006 -> 09:44 AM) Wouldn't that qualify more as attacking the messenger? Which is of course, somehting that never, ever, EVER happens here. Seriously, what exactly is Reid accused of having done wrong in that AP piece? He's not accused of using his position to make the land more valuable, he's not accused of using his position in an improper way, he's not accused of covering up anything, as far as I can tell, he's basically accused of having made $700k on a land deal. And remember, this is the same reporter who tried to Smear Reid in the Abramoff case while somehow casually failing to note that Reid never actually supported the position Abramoff wanted him to support.
