So...looking ahead...we have Garland on the mound tomorrow, and Anderson should be in CF for the rest of this series, which cuts out 1+ run per game that the Yankees would be handed. We're facing Johnson, a lefty, and we have struggled against lefties this season, but at this point who knows what Johnson will bring to the table. Garland needs to man up, hopefully he's over whatever was bothering him in Toronto, but I think he can do it. Thursday we've got Vazquez vs. Mussina. And that game will be decided by a simple question; was last Saturday's start by Vaz a fluke or not. If it wasn't, we win. If it was, the Yankees will be all over us. Anyone have an update on Uribe? Ah, here we go.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 08:10 PM) oh, cool. So we all basically have less then a month to live? Good to know. Dude, you know as well as I do the world ends on December 21, 2012. (And we better get a new X-Files movie before then, BTW.)

QUOTE(SoxAce @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 09:59 PM) Mark Prior, AJ Burnett and Kerry Wood should take lessons. Man does that kid have heart. I do agree that it isn't the right thing to do, he was taking one for the team sort of speak and still pitched well if that's true other than his last start even though 4 earned in his case is "bad". Take lessons? Heck, I would imagine that one of the big reasons those 3 guys are so screwed up is that they found themselves on teams that were winning fairly early in their careers, and overpushed their arms/pitched through some pain. Prior in 03, Wood in 98 and 03, not so sure about Burnett in 03.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 09:49 PM) Anyone else suprised at how deep Damon was playing? He didn't have a chance, especially with Tad running. Have to question Torre on that one. If I were a Yankee fan, I'd have wondered about almost as many moves by Torre tonight as I did about moves by the White Sox. Taking Myers out after not retiring a batter for example, when you've got the 3 weak guys against lefties coming up in the 8th, seemed to me like a mistake, but it worked out for them. Playing the outfield back late in the game like that with a RISP. There was something else but it's slipping my mind now.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 09:02 PM) Wilson Betemit with a homer to tie it at 2 in the 7th in LA. Why the hell did Atlanta trade this guy for Aybar and sorry ass Danys Baez? Baez has been good for ATL, but they aren't making the playoffs and he will remember that he blows, and Betemit is a GREAT guy to have considering Chipper is hurt so much. I know there have been talks about Aybar's attitude, but I really do like the kid as a potential player. Aybar is a couple years younger than Betemit, has very similar minor league numbers IMO (High 700's OPS), has higher batting averages in recent years, and much lower strikeout totals.

So, according to ESPN tonight...this elbow has been bothering Liriano for more than just the last 10 days, and he's been trying to do the classic "Pitch through it." In other words, the Twins really ought to be worrying about that kid.

So, according to TPMmedia...the FBI has also started looking into the potential hacking case. The website manager for the campaign has reportedly said that the FBI has asked for all of their files related to the potential hacking. Supposedly they were paying for more bandwith than what Kos and others suggested earlier in the day, and were not involved with the companies that they had invoices with (possibly those were contracts from earlier in the year.) They also claim they have protection against Denial of Service attacks at those pages. The guy running Lieberman's web page still claims the page was hacked, but, and I quote:

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 07:44 PM) Did they file a police report over the website thing? Does filing a complaint with the Conn. Attorney General count?

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 09:17 PM) Great win! Now can we end the Mackowiak in CF experiment??? Please, Ozzie????? I love Mackowiak--he hustles, hits fairly well, and can play many positions. But he should never start in CF unless Anderson is hurt. Had Brian Anderson started this game in CF, I fully believe Freddy Garcia gets the win. Had Brian Anderson not come in during the 8th inning, then it doesn't matter if Neal Cotts hits Giambi, because that run scores on the single by ARod. BA playing shallow and having a good arm (and throwing it well) keeps the run from scoring. And who knows how things go after that. Oh, and we can now officially add Rivera as a notch on that "Closers we've beaten" board this year. What is it now, Papelbon, Rivera, Chris Ray, isn't BJ Ryan on there somewhere, Guardado, Houston Street's on there somewhere, all of the guys in Detroit, I think we got Wickman at some point, Dumpster... We get down late in the season or in the playoffs, and I think we all gotta remember one thing...AL Closers just can't shut us down. Edit: Unless they're named Joe Nathan.

Well, I'll admit, I was wrong. I called this game over in the 8th inning. Hell of a game, 345.
-
Well...that's all for me. I'm gonna just assume this game is over, since I doubt we're getting out of this with just one. I'm going to go play some super nintendo. Yes, super nintendo. It's so much less painful.

Last night we lost on a balk, tonight we lose on a HBP. Brilliant!

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 07:32 PM) 95 low and away and the knees with sinking action for strike one. 94 running in fouled off for strike 2. Then a dumb 0-2 pitch. Jesus f***ing christ. Is this team filled with people who dont know what do to with and 0-2 count. Now here comes the apendage obsessed manager who brings in Neal Cotts who has a hard time with lefties to face a lefty. Here we go kids. Lets see how far Giambi hits it. Giambi is hitting .212 against lefties. That's the good news. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 07:34 PM) This has all the makings of a walk. Nope.

It'd be so nice if Neal could find his Marbles. But based on recent events...I think this ball flies 420 feet.
-
Mackowiak in Center...Jeter scores.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 07:28 PM) I think we're actually going to escape this jam, I really do. In 2005, I'd have been shocked if we didn't. In 2006, I'll be shocked if we do. Then again...we do have the right guy at the plate.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 05:25 PM) McCarthy has averaged 180 innings pitched per season over the last two years with no issues. Liriano has had prior arm troubles and throws a slider with a velocity over 90 mph. Throwing the slider while moving your arm at that speed puts an enormous amount of stress on the elbow, and he uses this pitch a lot. Up front this doesn't look to be an issue of being overworked, moreso a issue with mechanics and Liriano's frame. There is no way I would look at this incident and limit McCarthy's work had he been a starter or choose to use him in a bullpen role because of it. I understand your points, but I'll counter with this: BMac also has a very slender frame which has not yet had a lot of time to develop. He's thrown 180 innings over the last 2 years, but he's done so at ages what, 20 and 21? And his mechanics, well, we don't know fully y et, but his delivery is quite violent to my eyes. So if nothing else...I can't complain about keeping his innings low for another year. And I think that it makes sense with a lot of young pitchers...Verlander, McCarthy, Prior, Wood...etc.
-
Argh. Our starter actually gives us decent innings...and bam, bullpen manages to find a way to fall apart right away.

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 07:21 PM) I really want to see a walkoff homer in the 9th. Give us some life.. seriously, let's keep it tied until the 9th. Lefty in to face Podsednik, Iguchi, and Thome? It's already written, my son.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 06:42 PM) Tex, we're talking about a country that has let its current administration convince them that the pursuit of "tactical nukes" and both ethical and necessary. That technology is not being pursued for the results to remain unused. And they may not pack the megatons they bigger siblings do, but they are still bombs, are they not? Actually, use the correct term. Congress keeps calling them "Usable" nuclear weapons. Usable.
-
Dang, closer than I'd hoped. Might be enough to convince Joe to stay in as an Indep. Unless his campaign gets charged with filing a false police report over today.
-
Remember that thread I made about how opponents are able to bring in a Loogy to pitch to Podsednik, Iguchi, and Thome, and they can use that same pitcher for all 3 of them and get 3 good outs?

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 07:07 PM) Brian Anderson Oh, this makes the entire night so much better! Great, I'm doing dishes, and the guy I've been begging for all game comes in and makes a dynamite play that I don't see.
-
Has anyoen else realized that if Brian Anderson was in this game, Freddy Garcia could come out of the game right now and still have the chance to win it with a quality start?
