  1. Rob Mackowiak never, ever starts in CF again, barring injury to Anderson.
  2. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 11:18 AM) I thought that I heard that he passed through waivers. Yeah, upon 2nd thought, I was thinking Olney said exactly that last night.
  3. Interesting... Olney also noted that in about 11 days, Andruw Jones will get 10/5 rights, so if the Braves hold onto him for another 2 weeks, he gets the right to veto any trades, including next season, which is the last year of his deal. I really wouldn't be shocked to see him moved. Olney also noted last night that a lot of names were hitting the waiver wire and being called back, so the waiver deadline deals might not be as active this year.
  4. The deal is finished, with some cash going to Boston along with Lopez and a PTBNL going to Baltimore. Link
  5. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 10:52 AM) The problem is that a Primary loss is going to hurt him more in an independent bid. He WILL lose labor. He WILL lose CT party manpower. If he can't get enough paid volunteers to mount a GOTV operation now, what makes you think he'll be able to do it then? The question is not what makes me think he can do it then. The question is what makes HIM think he can do it then. I for one don't think he'll be able to, but now that he's realized he's in a fight, he has plenty of time to go back to those banks, big businesses, and so forth, and dredge up a bunch of donations before the election to still make it interesting, and he may well think that'll be enough. The one thing that is coming through about Lieberman in all this is that to him, it is all about Lieberman. He thinks that he's done a great job for the state and the party and everyone who doesn't agree with him has made a huge mistake, and so he may very well decide to go for it anyway, despite all the support he'll lose when Lamont beats him. One of his defining trends throughout this campaign, after his folks realized it was a campaign, is Lieberman being really bloody angry, from repeating "Who is Ned Lamont" over and over in their debate (and not thanking Lamont for showing up to the Debate, a normal courtesy, and one extended to Lieberman by Lamont) to the ridiculous godless killing machine ad that they came out with, Lieberman is just really pissed off about having to deal with this whole thing, and that alone may drive him to stay in, even after the battering he looks to take next Tuesday. He could also salvage the election by taking Colbert's cocoa puffs.
  6. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 10:30 AM) Lieberman has scrapped his GOTV program for the primary - apparently more and more convinced of a primary loss. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6080300597.html Makes me look like I was wrong in what i suggested the rumors were a little while ago...he's putting more money into TV ads to try to rebuild his image before the General. You know, even if he wins the general, it'll be nice for Fox to not be able to have him on criticising the position of his own party every week, and it'll be nice to not have him be the one holdout who prevents the party from coming up with a more unified position on Iraq.
  7. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 09:40 AM) ticktockticktock??? That's the sound of the innings bomb about to go off in Verlander's arm, turning him into Mark Prior.
  8. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) Javy Lopez is a need trade. This isn't a Varitek vs. Lopez argument, it's a Lopez vs. Mirabelli/minor league catcher argument. Lopez is better than Mirabelli. I don't know who the Sawx have in the minors, but they don't have Shoppach anymore. the issue they are going to have is if Varitek comes back this year...are they going to carry three catchers? Mirabelli is Wakefields personal catcher and Varitek is better overall than Lopez and they already have one of the best DHs in the league so... Where Will Javy Play? My money says DFA/try to send him to the minors. They need him for a month or so to try to keep the Yankees from running away with that division. They have enough money where they can do things like that.
  9. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 09:28 AM) Yeah, his inability to throw strikes will keep him from that stage. It will take him a few years. I agree on that, but I don't know if he's going to learn that lesson the way it needs to be learned if he's not facing big league hitters. He gets into Washington, or Pittsburgh, San Fran, or even Tampa/K.C., gets to deal with a ML pitching coach, gets a routine, and gets to face guys that can really hurt him, and I bet he'll pick it up pretty quick.
  10. Kerry Wood opts not to have another reconstructive shoulder surgery, and to instead just rehab the thing. Yet another reason why no sane person should ever suggest signing him to more than a AAA, league minimum deal.
  11. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 08:49 AM) Neither are ready for the show. Look at more than their ERA to determine their worth. I still think Haeger should be starting in the big leagues...not with us, but with someone, preferably (for him) in the NL. If not this season, then certainly to start next year.
  12. QUOTE(MichiganBorn @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 08:39 AM) Should have but this "last place team" put 19 runs on the first place team in the East so I think I can live with the losses. I don't like them but I can live with it. Plus we only loss half a game on the Sox (He wasn't insulting the Tigers, he's insulting the people who were pissed on this page that the White Sox, without Thome and Konerko, only managed to take 2/3 from the Royals)
  13. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 06:48 AM) Lieberman is running a sort of Anti-Walmart theme in his campaign to be fair. Thus once again proving how idiotic our campaign finance system is. Running an anti-Walmart campaign, yet getting donations from Walmart and owning Walmart stock? Yeah, that makes perfect sense to me. I'm sure Walmart actually wants the greater restrictions on their company, and that's why they're giving money to him.
  14. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 12:11 PM) There is always good reason for rage when talking about modern SNL. That show hasn't been funny since the mid 80's and it just keeps getting worse and worse. Terrible show. That Prospector thing was stupid. I think that SNL has currently a habit of being dragged along wherever society has taken it. The more pre-packaged, dumbed down, and sold off for marketing society has become, the more SNL has become dumbed down and loaded with pop culture jokes.
  15. No one's said it yet, but Joe Girardi = NL manager of the year. Without any doubt.
  16. Hopefully the extra day of rest has helped Garland feel better. He's going to have to be on tonight. And hopefully we can welcome back 25 and 14 into a reconstituted murderer's row. And I hope to God Mack doesn't start in CF, but against a tough righty, I'm betting he will, which of course guarantees that Garland won't be able to pitch a shutout.
  17. QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 08:20 AM) So one story can complete wipe out media bias? I know people here prefer to ignore media bias, but it is still prevalent. Not as much, but it's definitely there. This is just the beginning of th eventual switch to this city being owned by the Sox. Not that it bothers me being the 2nd team, but this is just the reality of the situation. When this shows up in the Tribune, it's more than the beginning.
  18. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 08:12 AM) Even last year I would have made a couple of arguements against that... First of all almost all of those teams had Hall of Fame players in huge rolls, which we don't/didn't. Also their #1 and usually #2 pitchers were very dominant, where our trademark was just very good pitching 1-5. I think in this day and age we have the potential to be in the playoffs on an annual basis with this team, but dynasty is a whole nother story. Jim Thome? And it's still early, but a young Mark Buehrle (if he stays healthy and makes a run at 300)?
  19. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 10:14 AM) First, I'd like to say that the season isn't over. I didn't say that. As for the bold part, we're in a tight race here with 3 or 4 teams for 1 playoff spot. We're going to have to sweep some bad teams if we plan on playing baseball in October. So, we should start "expecting" some sweeps, especially against these AAA teams. Yeah, and the team with the best record in baseball ought to expect to be able to sweep AAA teams also! If not, then they're just pretenders! Oh, wait.
  20. QUOTE(WCSox @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 05:49 PM) Israel is no slouch when it comes to technology. They've been rumored to have manufactured a nuclear weapon for quite some time. Which, interestingly enough, they might not have gotten during the 60's without the active support of Britain and France (france helped build the Dimona reactor, the rest is covered in that page). QUOTE(WCSox @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 05:49 PM) Given that Israel has fallen under attack from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, etc. over the years, I think that our support is more than justified. How many nations have instigated attacks against those Arab states, or Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, Hamas, or the Islamic Jihad for that matter? So, given that Israel has launched surprise attacks on Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt in the past, would your argument then grant that those countries are allowed to ship weapons to organizations fighting Israel? (I sure don't believe this, but I'm just trying to show you the hole in your argument here).
  21. And all I was saying was that a reasonable chunk of Nader's cash came from Republican donors. Here's numbers to back it up. July 04, several tens of thousands of dollars going to Nader by people who also gave to Bush. Why is this something i'm getting hammered on? I can't even figure out what you people are trying to argue.
  22. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 05:24 PM) Buehrle would say otherwise. Not this year.
  23. QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 05:10 PM) Maybe I should have prefaced it and said if he "consistently threw 95 mph". BMac mostly sits at 91, correct? I'm pretty sure that the one clocking at 91 is his 2-seamer that he was working on last offseason. When he goes out with the straight 4-seamer, at least most of the times I've seen it, he pushes 93-94.
