  1. Man, there's no other option other than Yes or No? Half of me despises the death penalty, for 2 reasons. 1...it is clearly not administered fairly under many, many circumstances. Race is clearly a gigantic factor. Economics and ability to afford quality legal respresentation are others. The odds are, quite simply, that somewhere in this country, probably Texas, several people who were actually innocent have been executed, just based on the sheer number of people released from death row after having convictions overturned. Secondly...all evidence suggests it simply is NOT a deterrant. States with it simply do not, on average, see major decreases in crime due to its presence. You can cite a few places where it is associated with drops, but you can cite instances where it is associated with increases. As a deterrant I don't believe it works at all. On the other hand...first, there is some level of closure involved for many families when the death penalty is administered. That should be an important factor...it is not the case for every family, but it is for enough families that it should be considered. And secondly...if I were to truly say I were anti-death-penalty, I should be able to look at every single case and say the death penalty isn't warranted. Put Bin Laden in our jails after a fair trial and clear guilty verdict...and I simply cannot say that. If I cannot say that, I cannot say I oppose the death penalty. So I guess my answer is a very guilty feeling yes, if I have to give one. But I really hate the fact that the system is so broken in this country that I feel terrible in that answer. And y'all can call me "Brian".
  2. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 06:38 PM) Tyson with 10/9 @ the half. f***. Yes. Dude missed 1 shot from the floor in the 1st half. Had some damn nice looking dunks too. Throw in 2 assists too. Hinrich's having a damn good half too, but I think we're all noticing that the key to this team winning is Tyson. He keeps doing this and they look like a playoff team. This is what, his 4th good game in a row? By the way...it's nice when WGN actually carries these games out here.
  3. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 06:17 PM) I dont want her to win.........just siphon off enough votes to get a Republican in there. I was talking about her actually winning a primary race, or screwing us up in our efforts to remove another person in a primary. She won't win in a general...and even if she ran in a general, Di-Fi's support out here is so vastly strong that the Repubs still wouldn't have a chance.
  4. LOL...at least she's picking a seat that she won't have a prayer in Hell of winning. I'm glad she's not challenging Liebermann and screwing us up on that one, or running for a seat where we actaully have a pickup chance.
  5. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 04:22 PM) (Hopefully I was accurate to put that in green). But yeah, Farmer basically sold out Rooney and took the cheap-o deal so he can do the pbp all 9 innings, or that's surely what it looks like from a distance. Is it possible that Farmer actually took less money to try to make it easier for the Score to pay Rooney, and Farmer's mad that JR left?
  6. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 08:49 PM) Yah. And if he thought Marte could have been a definite star in the league, he would have gotten a stopgap. Obviously both Schuerholz and Epstein thought Marte was expendable for good, but not great players. There is a reason for that. Especially considering that Schuerholz has no probablem with letting young guys play. I think the Renteria move was a damn good one on Schuerholz's part. They got Chipper Jones to reduce his yearly salary total in exchange for an extra guaranteed year to save them money. Then they traded a top prospect not just for Renteria, but for Renteria AND CASH, in classic KW style. But they needed a place to put Chipper, and he's always been at his best when he plays 3rd. They have a ton of outfield talent, and it's all very young. Francoeur, Langerhans, Johnson, and Mr. 50 home runs Jones. They are stacked in the outfield and had to move someone, so they moved one of their guys for cash and a player. I think it'll wind up being a great move for them, especially since it frees up their outfield for more youth.
  7. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 01:26 PM) I like the deal for them as well. Crisp is a great offensive CF, but he sucks defensively at CF. His arm is a noodle. The Indians got Marte, a backup catcher, a decent RP when healthy and a OF who gets on-base at a great clip while giving up a decent OF, a nice RP, a bad backup C and a another bad RP. The indians were trading from a position of strength and Boston was trading from a position of desperation. The Indians would have to be fools to come up with a deal that people didn't think they came out of in good shape. It's the same deal as KW with Contreras...they didn't need to trade Crisp, so Boston had to do something to make it worth doing the deal for Cleveland. And hell, Boston had a wet noodle for an arm in CF last year and got by. This trade probably saves them money that they can spend next year since Crisp only made the minimum last year...he's younger than Damon so he'll probably wind up being healthier, and Boston doesn't have to worry about his range decreasing as his legs get older. All they need is for him to put up numbers like he did last year, and they'll be all right. They have a good enough offense that they can live with an extra ball or two falling in the outfield, as long as they have a good bat there and find a way to make Ramirez stop the trade requests.
  8. QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 05:09 PM) Vegas Rays? When you have a team that's the 2nd or 3rd most profitable in baseball every year, why the Hell would you move it? In Vegas there might be more pressure to win. Besides, somehow I get the feeling we'll be seeing the Vegas Marlins first.
  9. I think this kid's going to make a legit run at the ROY award this year.
  10. Konerko was, before last october, the most underrated guy with 40+ home runs 2 years in a row IMO. If he's overrated...it's only because his october was THAT DAMN GOOD. And he gets a nice shiny ring out of it.
  11. Can I still call him Shaggy?
  12. NYT Link. I believe that several agencies within the administration instituted this policy a few months ago - every single public statement by any scientist in the government had to be approved by a political appointee, whether it was from the FDA, EPA, NASA, etc. Good to see someone with a little bit of a name behind them is finally calling them on it.
  13. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 05:09 PM) Her joke is technically a violation of Arkansas law and is punishable by ten years in prison. Oh you've got to be kidding me...will someone please try to prosecute this just to see what happens? (Sure whatever law it broke is probably unconstitutional...but I would just love to see it happen anyway.)
  14. Aside from the unsourced rumor about Arafat dying of AIDS, that last post is actually very close to right on. With the amount of money lost to corruption by that government...it's not surprising that the people want new leadership, nor is it that surprising they're turning to the only people who are offering answers.
  15. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 05:39 AM) So, did you flirt back . . . Um...I think you're thinking of the previous governor.
  16. None of this of course takes into account the massively higher OBP we'll be sticking in front of Konerko...which may very well give PK a shot at the MVP if he avoids a prolongued slump and hits with RISP. Put Thome in front of PK instead of Everett and Paulie probably drives in 20+ more runs last year. I still think up and down the lineup we're a stronger team. Thomas's numbers inflate our DH home run and RBI totals without hurting the total DH batting average that much since he wasn't there for long.
  17. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 05:54 PM) I didn't see a website listed in my post. But if you would like a reference try Stephen Hayes. He writes for the Weekly Standard. And I could direct you to Michael Moore for facts also...but there's a reason I don't.
  18. QUOTE(Cknolls @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 05:57 PM) But he was back in Washington today speaking on the floor of the Senate. Quick turn around don't you think. You couldn't do that flying commercial, in coach no less. Yes, how dare that elitist John Kerry dare take a private plane! Our wonderful President would never even consider taking his own plane! He's too much of an average American!
  19. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 04:14 PM) Once again you go on some looney leftist website and parrot their rediculous accusations as if they're fact. :rolly Well...you have to admit, it was a fair response to CKnolls doing exactly the same thing from the other side.
  20. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jan 27, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) microsoft doesn't make computers It destroys them.
  21. Dude...do you not see the irony between you finding a problem with her joking about poisoning Stevens and you saying someone should poison her?
  22. Priceless video clip... Conan O'Brien and Stephen Colbert... "I shot you very near the heart!"
  23. The next time a Republican or a media person misled by RNC talking points tells us how Abramoff infected both parties equally with his slime...Here's where you need to send them. The Dems have plenty of Problems...but Jack Abramoff is theirs, not ours.
