  1. Just to ask...do I have some reason to believe that Talabani is a truly 100% reliable source for this? No one else has leaked it, and suddenly an Iraqi politician who would probably like nothing better than to have his name in the paper associated with good news leaks it? I'll buy it when more sources say the same thing. There have been way too many examples already of wierd, essentially false leaks of information coming out of the Iraqi government for me to believe this statement at face value from only 1 source.
  2. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 7, 2005 -> 08:39 AM) And it doesn't help instill confidence when your rescuers do things like cold-calling officials in Charleston, SC, to tell them you are flying in refugees in 30 minutes to be housed, but then go and land in Charleston, WV. I can't remember where I saw that last night, I think somewhere in the nola coverage. I think you may have seen it 2 pages ago in this thread.
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2005 -> 06:28 AM) To further this point, there was a point in this countries history where a majority of the population thought discrimination was OK, does that mean if 50% +1 think that blacks or anyone else is an inferior race, that is would be OK to discriminate against them? It depends...on where the majority of the people named Steve ends up.
  4. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 7, 2005 -> 07:50 AM) Cheer up, Heads. If my family gets displaced this season I'll thoughtfully consider all that Iowa has to offer me as a prospective refugee (which shouldn't take very long). Seriously guys...stop dissing Iowa...it's not just Iowa. FEMA arranged for 3 luxury cruise ships to be leased and move off the Gulf Coast. There are beds, toilets, and food on them for roughly 6000 people. The problem...the people sitting at the Astrodome are so scared about being lost or accidentally cut off again now that they actually have supplies that none of them are willing to move. The people are also worried that if they move away from the big body of refugees, it'll make it harder for them to find homes and schools for their kids whenever the government actually starts dealing with those people. So while the Iowa jokes may be funny...the problem isn't Iowa...the problem is the Hell that those people have been put through. Full story here.
  5. This quote appeared in an early AP version of this story. Ted Stevens, by the way, is Senator for a state that is about to build a $500 million bridge to an island with 50 inhabitants.
  6. Why God...why are we cursed by these people... Seriously...out here in CA, I'm going to start stockpiling extra water. If that crack in the ground moves, I've lost any confidence in the ability of this government to contain the situation.
  7. Thank you Jon Stewart...as usual. Classic show tonight by the Daily Show folks. If you haven't seen it...go watch clips when people post them.
  8. QUOTE(BFirebird @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 06:22 PM) Can't get the game down here at school.....has duque had decent control today? 2 walks through 4 innings...60 pitches, 34 strikes.
  9. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 06:15 PM) BTW, if anyone doubts that we should re-sign pauly, I would like to hear your argument against how he is the damn offensive heartbeat of this team That's not the key question...the key question remains the Ordonez/Lee question...how much else do we lose by committing $11-12 million to Konerko?
  10. Running under the AP tagline...
  11. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 06:10 PM) I said I highly doubt that 64% of Illinoisians (Is that a word? ) think ID should be taught in school meaning a much lower % would support the movement. Therefore I used the term "few people" to describe the percentage of residents in Illinois that support the teaching of ID. The only question that matters is...How Many of them are named Steve?
  12. Man, I love ARow hitting with 2 outs and people on.
  13. Shouldn't Pods be fast enough to score from 1st when Iguchi doubles?
  14. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel dirty when they learn that Viagra is sponsoring the "Comeback player of the year" award.
  15. Oh sweet mercy...this is from the Shelbyville Times-Gazette in Tennessee Let's all hope he was just being overley pessimistic in the number.
  16. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 04:38 PM) According to Gameday and the whitesox.com, Adkins is back. Didn't I just read in 1 of the papers thsi morning that they didn't want him back yet?
  17. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 04:33 PM) we're seeing the best the angels have, that's for sure. And I'm grateful for that since I think we're going to see them in the first round, imho. Good to get a look at their best rotation. Especially Lackey -- he's been awesome since the break. They need all the looks they can get at this guy. I have trouble figuring out how we'll face them in the first round...I see 2 possibilities, but I think neither one is likely. Right now the Yankees have a worse record than them...if the Yankees passed them, we'd still play the Yankees because Boston coudln't play New York. If Oakland were to pass the Yankees, we'd have Oakland in the first round. If Cleveland passed the Yankees...Ok, we'd have the Angels in round 1. If Oakland passed the A's and the A's still won the WC, we'd also have the A's in round 1. I see us playing NY in round 1 as the most likely scenario right now...Oakland is probably going to fall off the pace now that Crosby is hurt again...and Cleveland has been falling back a bit lately.
  18. QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 09:02 PM) 1. Atlanta Braves 2. Milwaukee Brewers 3. Anaheim Angels 4. Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5. Minnesota Twins 6. White Sox 7. Cleveland Indians 8. Colorado Rockies 9. Seattle Mariners 10. Toronto Blue Jays Everyone around here keeps sayingi that the Dodgers belong somewhere in that list.
  19. QUOTE(HeGone! @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 03:10 PM) Barring a great outing tonight for El Duque, shouldn't McCarthy get the experience and pitch Sunday? Personally I actually like the idea of a 6 man rotation for the next few weeks...the rest wouldn't hurt the other guys, and the experience wouldn't hurt BMac.
  20. Congrats to the best game-caller in the AL!
  21. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) No, according to much of those at SoSH, Schilling looked good yesterday... :banghead Actually he didn't look that bad the first few innings...then his split finger started rising up and he started overthrowing it. His velocity never really was there either...but once the location started to leave him, he got in trouble.
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:59 PM) Still, the fact that he's going to be out for the next 2 games should not make people happy that the Sox didn't trade for him. You can't be pining for him one second then you don't get him, he misses 2 games you you're glad you didn't trade for him. That makes no sense. You're totally correct that him being out for 2 games shouldn't make people wish that we hadn't traded for him...if the price was someone other than BMac, Anderson, or Gonzalez, I still wish we had...assuming of course the diagnosis is correct and he's only out for 2 days.
  23. Is there some reason Kerry Wood didn't make the list?
  24. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:05 PM) I think that's absurd I dont' in the least. Given the parity in the NFL...it's not out of the question to think that outside of san francisco...the worst team in the league could finish up with 4-5 wins. I have difficulty sitting here and pointing at any team that doesnt' have hope of winning at least that many...even S.F. The Bears are not an 0-16 team...but I certainly would be surprised if they could even push being an 8-8 team. I can see them picking off 4-5 wins, which to me, puts them in the very top part of the draft again. And if the 9ers decide they're satisfied with their QB, that leaves Leinart up for grabs to any below-average team who loses its tiebreakers.
  25. QUOTE(YASNY @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:30 PM) I'm not sure we have the luxury to forget about the politics. We certainly need to prioritize getting help to these people, but we have to examine what happened and what didn't happen here. We could have another natural disaster, or man made disaster, next week. We have to get on this and fix it, asap. Also...if there were people who badly screwed up the jobs they were supposed to do (yes there were)...these same people will be the ones who's job it is to continue fixing things and rebuild that disaster area. If they couldn't do 1 of their jobs...who's to say they won't screw up the next one?
