  1. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:51 PM) The guy had a bad break injury wise for a few years, he has NOT been hurt at all this year. How can you call the guy injury prone if he's healthy for the entire season while putting up ridiculous offensive numbers? If Nomar were healthy and hitting well all this year...I'd still call him injury prone. J.D. Drew was healthy and hitting well all last year. I thought the Dodgers overpaid for him...because he was injury prone. (I was right). You need like 2-3 years at least in order to fully clear that title.
  2. QUOTE(the People's Champ @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:50 PM) well, the way i grasp it, either you're injury prone......or your not. didn't know you could shed that tag. With a couple healthy seasons in a row, yeah you can. But it takes more than 1 year to do it.
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:05 PM) No walks in his last 3 starts, that's just simply incredible for Jose. What was his era in August? It was around the low 1's but as impressive as that is, that no walks in 3 starts is the most impressive stat to me. Man I didn't even know that stat...great work while I was gone Jose
  4. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 02:26 PM) More than likely. She probably hasn't delivered yet. I believe they were going to induce labor yesterday
  5. Does New Orleans still qualify for the high population lists? 9 New Orleans, LA $31,369 Seriously though...please note...the 9th poorest city in the union was just destroyed. In other words...the people there really don't have the money to get their lives back together, and in many cases, they didn't have the money to get out.
  6. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) What do you expect the Bears record wise? I think the Bears have a serious chance at Leinart next year.
  7. Roberts said abortion is "Settled law" while he was not in a position to do anything about it. The fact that he was willing to enforce that ruling while he was working for a lower court says absolutely nothing about how he would vote were he given the opportunity to restrict or overturn it. His lower court rulings on that issue are TOTALLY IRRELEVANT.
  8. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 01:44 PM) Yup, bring Paulie back... 2 months ago I was wanting him back only if he gave us a nice discount...he's really starting to earn his pay in my eyes though.
  9. QUOTE(knightni @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 01:20 PM) http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PIT/2001.shtml *Ahem* So you seriously look at that lineup, adjust for the fact that 2001 was probably the biggest power/steroids year on record, and you think that we should be impressed? The team batting average was .247 for crying out loud, and their team ERA was over 5.
  10. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) They showed a picture on Brit Hume's show last night with dozens and dozens of school busses all sitting dress right dress in a parking lot in about 2 feet of water. Why weren't they pressed into service by local officials to get people out of there? Lots of reasons. Because the local people didn't think it would be that bad either, because the local people expected federal help, because it's almost impossible to evacuate that many people without the national guard, because the locals expected the feds to do it, because without federal help there would have been no destination to send them to, etc. The fact is this...it was a gigantic failure all around. At a dozen steps, taking a single action could have saved a thousand lives. Moving those buses in advance could easily have saved lives. Having Chertoff learn about the levee breach less than 1 day after it happened could have saved lives. Cutting back the tax cuts by $25 billion in order to shore up those levees could have saved lives. The reality is...this hurricane exposed a mess of poor organization and planning up and down the chain of command. The people running the city in Louisiana did a terrible job beforehand, as did the Federal government. The Federal Government did an equally bad job afterwards. You cannot excuse the incompetence of either group here.

    Allergies

I caught a cold on my field trip and have been coughing a lot, but other than that it hasnt' been anything unusual. Then again, I'm in a different state from a lot of you, so maybe I'm just not being exposed to whatever it is that particular mill is dumping. And also, my allergies aren't seasonal...dust mites, all year long...so they're usually a pretty constant thing.
  12. QUOTE(knightni @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 12:49 PM) Before Jason Bay, they had Brian Giles, Jason Kendall, Aramis Ramirez, Craig and Jack Wilson, the same pitchers minus Oliver Perez and still couldn't finish .500. That's also a young Aramis Ramirez before his real power surge started and while he was making a ton of errors, and an overpaid Jason Kendall.
  13. From ESPN.com Yup. The Pirates fire their manager. That'll solve all their problems now, I tell you what. He's been the source of it all. Hopefully McClendon gets another shot...he was a better manager than that organization deserves.
  14. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 11:23 AM) this is a great example of the old "the best trade is sometimes the trade you don't make" adage. Jon Garland for Erstad. Konerko for Randy Johnson.
  15. Colon's status for his start on saturday is still being referred to as "Uncertain" due to back trouble.
  16. Is there any chance Mike Sweeney might need a few days off? Go get em El Duque...make it 6... It's been like 20 years or so since this team has had a 9 game winning streak. I think it's time.
  17. If Borchard has even a non-terrible month...will he have any trade value at all? If not, what are the chances he'll be able to get a roster spot (Timo's?) coming out of Spring Training next year? Otherwise we lose him for nothing.
  18. Frank Thomas is washed up in the exact same sense that Ken Griffey Jr. was washed up coming into this season.
  19. I think this explains a lot.
  20. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Sep 6, 2005 -> 06:59 AM) That's really odd that you would have a strong hatred for Nixon. How old were you while he was in office? Just remember this about Richard Nixon...he personally extended the Vietnam war by 5 years. Johnson had an agreement for a framework of a peace settlement in October 1968, but Nixon arranged for it to be sabotaged so that there wouldn't be an "October Surprise" that could defeat him in the election.
  21. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) The best option at our fingertips, I assume you mean. That doesn't mean we can't go out and trade for a Lyle Overbay as a stopgap type player, or perhaps as a player for the future...nor does it mean the Sox can't try and trade for a Jim Thome or a Todd Helton. That also doesn't mean that we can't go out and upgrade elsewhere while downgrading at catcher. Get a 3Bman that can hit, try and get a SS with power, perhaps cut ties with Frank and bring in anybody that can hit, period. I figure Rowand will rebound power wise somewhat at the plate next year, Iguchi will hit for a little better power, Uribe will probably rebound slightly as well, and Crede could perhaps start hitting like he was in June and July before these injuries started to come up. We should be fine with or without Konerko next year. A Jim Thome or a Todd Helton is an even worse option than a Konerko...both cost either as much as Konerko probably will or even more than that...and Thome is a gigantic healthy question unless the Phillies pick up his whole contract, which they won't do without us giving them a gigantic prize (and BMac ain't leavin). Crede really wasn't doing that well before the "Injuries" either...he had a couple good weeks early in the year, but a terrible May, and at best an average June. He's really starting to seem to me as a career .240 hitter. Iguchi and Rowand will probably be better next year, as (hopefully) will Uribe...but we still need some good production from 1b. Our offense this year hasn't exactly been the league's best...and losing Konerko would be losing a huge piece.
  22. QUOTE(WSFAN35 @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 05:54 PM) What about the possibility of Bill Mueller playing first, or Kevin Millar? Both of them still have a fairly decent cost associated with them...Millar is making $3.5 mil this year and may command a small raise over that in the offseason...Mueller is making $2.5 mil this year and will probably command a similar raise...I think both will probably cost in the $5 million a year range. Their numbers would probably be a downgrade over Konerko almost to the point of a healthy Gload...and a healthy Gload would cost like 1/5 as much as either of them. I don't like either of those options...neither one will be worth the price they will cost.
  23. I like Blum trying to move to 3rd on that play...entirely because it gives us 2 chances at a sacrifice fly/squeeze bunt instead of 1. Making the 3rd out of an inning at 3rd, like Pods did yesterday while trying to steal third, is a terrible idea. But there are cases where risking the first out of an inning there is more acceptable, because it sets up the sac fly.
  24. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 05:37 PM) Hillary calls for commission on Katrina and legislation to remove FEMA from Homeland Security http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/...9p-293306c.html I fully agree with the idea of a commission, but I think I disagree with the other proposal...FEMA actually does belong in the DHS...in the event of a terrorist attack, the head of the DHS will need to summon FEMA, and there are resources throughout the DHS (FBI, National Guard, Coast Guard, etc.) that are not directly under the control of FEMA but do fall within the jurisdiction of the DHS and can be very useful in the event of a natural disaster like this one. FEMA actually belongs in the DHS. But there clearly need to be other changes...first of all we need to remove the incompetent leaders who are running FEMA and the DHS and who didn't realize that the levees had broken and flooded New Orleans until 36 hours after it happened. Secondly, FEMA needs to divert resources away from fighting terrorism and back to general disaster preparedness. Third...there needs to be a reorganization of the command structure of the DHS such that in the event of a natural disaster, the command of all of FEMA and the DHS fall under 1 person...with clearly defined roles for everyone underneath that person (my suggestion is that in the event a state of emergency is declared, the whole of the DHS falls under the command of the FEMA head...assuming we get a competent FEMA head and not a guy who was fired from a job trading horses for the Saudis) Also...FEMA's budget needs to go massively back up, and the FEMA director needs a better method of communicating with the President in the event of a declaration of emergency. Even if the president is playing a guitar with a country music star.
  25. QUOTE(YASNY @ Sep 5, 2005 -> 05:36 PM) That's for sure. I was more impressed by this performance than the one over Texas. Any time any pitcher holds Ramirez and Ortiz to a single between them...that's more than impressive...it's amazing.
