  1. QUOTE(the People's Champ @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:39 PM) ANY QUESTIONS
  2. The real benefit of standing pat this year will not be known for a couple of years. This year, hopefully we'll make a run in the playoffs, and yeah if we overpaid for someone that could have helped. But 2 years or so down the line, when El Duque and Jose are gone from the rotation, and Konerko and Crede are gone from the infield, and Dye is gone from the outfield, and Hermanson and Marte are gone from the pen, and they're replaced by guys named Anderson, Fields, McCarthy, Gonzalez, Jenks, or someone else along those lines, and KW then suddenly discovers he has the money to keep Jon Garland and Mark Buehrle and AJ Pierzynski and Scott Podsednik because he has young talent filling the holes created when the more expensive free agents departed...that's when we'll know the benefit of standing pat this year.
  3. QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:59 PM) I can see the Yankees picking him up They seem to go for the ancient and infirmed as of late Mostly this year...they don't have a choice, since their other guys have been that bad/that hurt too. Wang isn't exactly ancient, although he's been hurt too.
  4. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:12 PM) And I do think that both Pete Rose and Rafiel Palmiero should both be in the Hall of Fame. I think they should get in as soon as Shoeless Joe gets in.
  5. QUOTE(That funky motion @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:48 PM) The team plays better on the road! I wonder if that stat will keep holding true if you count only times that the Cell was sold out, like it would be in the playoffs. Nothing like 38,000 people standing and yelling during Thunderstruck to wake you up. (We make the series, and I'm figuring out a way to fly 2000 miles to be one of them!)
  6. This is one of those stories that I don't know if I should describe it as disgusting, sickening, pathetic, or just totally unsurprising. Ameriquest Mortgage company is about to agree to a $365 million settlement with all 50 states in this country for totally defrauding customers nationwide, through all sorts of shady dealings described at that link. Their owner throughout all this is a billionaire named Roland Arnall. Over the last few years, Mr. Arnall has been one of President Bush's biggest contributors, giving about $600,000 to various pro-Bush causes and groups in the time. As thanks for either the payments to pro-Bush functions or the fraud (I'm not sure which Bush would reward - perhaps both) Mr. Arnall has been named U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands. This is the 8th ambassadorship given out by Mr. Bush to $100,000+ donors since the start of this year. Here's a nice little description from one of those links.
  7. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 09:57 AM) Acording to the Baltimore Sun, whom he met with prior to the game, he is not appealing it. According to this ESPN piece an appeal was already conducted by the player's association before the public test and the suspension was made public. Doesn't that raise your confidence in the testing program, that they conducted an appeal without telling us?

    Discovery's Trip

    QUOTE(mreye @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:27 AM) Dish Network has it. As does DirecTV (channel 376)
  9. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:34 AM) Kinda hard for a guy with average range to make a lot of errors at 1B. He ranks 15th in the big leagues in attempts as a 1b, which is fairly low for a person who's played as many games as he has.
  10. Man, I can remember when this guy was supposed to team with ARod in Seattle to give the best young 1-2 punch in history, and was then one of hte highest regarded players traded by Seattle when they tried to make a pennant run.
  11. Konerko does have the 5th highest fielding percentage in the major leagues this year right now.
  12. This team also hasn't had an off day since the AS break until today. All of our pitchers have been on 4 days rest for quite some time...some less (buehrle) with the AS Game. I think the extra day of rest will do these guys, especially on the mound, some good. At least I hope so. There have been a couple times this season where I've been worried that we were going into a slump, that we were just treading water, that we'd been stuck at x games over .500 for what seemed like forever, and every time I have started thinking that, this team fired off another 8 game winning streak. I think they know they looked bad in their last few series, and hopefully some of them will start to pick it up.
  13. That play on Iguchi is now ruled an error. 2 unearned runs.
  14. QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 08:27 AM) I find his show quite refreshing. He covers actual news... and not 20 minutes of "It's Hot in July." Did you know that there's a young pregnant woman in Pennsylvania who's now been missing for nine days? What, you haven't heard about it? Oh yeah, her name was Latoyia Figueroa . Care to guess now why you haven't heard about her? Seriously though, the press won't cover this one because she's not white and blonde...there are a couple internet-based groups that have tried to raise funds as a reward to find her, if you can spare a few...there's links at that page.
  15. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 04:45 PM) Top of the 3rd now. It's rare in my life that I root for the Yankees. It still makes me feel ill when I have to.
  16. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) I know the Bo-Sox were kind of in the Burnett derby, but besides that, haven't they been kinda quiet just before the deadline? Anyone even heard any rumors about what the Yanks might pick up? Strange. The Red Sox will find more bullpen help before the deadline. Be assured of that. They've been rumored talking to minnesota about a swap of JC Romero for Millar/Mueller, they already swapped Jay Payton, etc. The Yankees would have to trade Wang or Cano to get someone, and they're not going to do that. I think this may be the year the Yankees stand pat.
  17. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 03:59 PM) No Joe?? No Aaron??? No Gooch??? What is this? The 3rd game of the series?? It's been a while since some of the guys have had a rest...Joe in particular, I don't think he's sat since Cleveland. Remember, we haven't had an offday since the AS Break. Heck, I'm almost wishing AJ could get an extra day off today before he sits for the Widge tomorrow, just since AJ's been playing a lot lately.
  18. The Twinkies haven't had a 30 homer guy since the 80's.
  19. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 01:34 PM) VERY good news. A healthy Luol and a healthy Eddy propel the Bulls to the EC Finals last year IMO. Over Miami? No, not last year. Shaq played enough in the 2nd round that they could have beaten us. EC and Luol probably put us in round 2, but we weren't ready to match up with Miami yet.
  20. QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 12:14 PM) Lets not forget, Neyer did pick us to win the Central before the season started. I had a question for Neyer that didn't get printed, and I'm going to keep asking it until it does: Rob, before the season started you picked the White Sox, then after the Sox came out with a torrid May, you turned against them and started saying they weren't that good. I think almost any one else in sports would be bragging that they picked the Sox during the spring. What did you see during that hot start that made you change your mind about the team?
  21. It's about time for AJ to get a couple days off anyway...Buehrle and Garland pitching tonight and Tomorrow, off day Thursday...and he's worked a lot lately.
  22. I read at least one place that said that JP Losman, who the Bills grabbed with the 20th pick in 04, would probably have been a #1 pick if he was in the 05 draft as a QB. Smith was probably the best pick for the 9ers at #1, but they really did pick the wrong year to have a terrible season. Smith isn't a guy who you can point at and think "This guy will turn around my franchise completely", at least not yet. Some guys turn out better than expected (Drew Brees), some guys turn out worse than expected (See: the last 15 or so drafts by the Bears). You can't always tell, that's a given, but Smith just seems like he's starting a step below some other recent guys like Palmer or Manning.
  23. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 26, 2005 -> 12:38 AM) Which Lee DLee. Carlos would probably have less RBI's on our team than he does on the Brewers, as shown by the stats above.
  24. Time for Mark to get back on track. Time for another jolt in the arm of our offense. Get those bats really awake for when we hit Baltimore. Tear these bastages apart!
  25. So...let me just get this straight. Quite a few people here have turned against Paul Konerko because he: is currently hitting .260 (althoguh that's way up from May), he's one of the highest paid players on our team at $8 million a year, he may be on the downward side of his career with his numbers going down this year and he's done poorly with RISP. And you're suggesting we replace him with a guy who can't stay healthy, who makes $5 million a year more than Konerko, and who has a much longer contract?
