  1. QUOTE(Sox Hustler @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 01:48 PM) I give them props no doubt but I don't know of any other f***in team that pulls more games out of their asses than them. If Uribe's shot had been a few feet to the right...
  2. I believe that last year, Billy Beane's big move (getting Dotel in the Beltran deal) also happened well before the trading deadline actually hit, if that means anything.
  3. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 11:53 AM) If he was plunked, i dont think they would call it a strain. I think it would be called a bruise. Strain sounds to me like he landed on it funny. I think it m ore than likely had to be related to a swing - he grounded out in the half of the inning before he was replaced. I doubt he had to dive or anything, but I didn't actually see the play.
  4. Stolen from an ESPN.com chat: "News: Justin Morneau was removed in the 5th inning of Thursday's game against Cleveland with a left elbow strain. He was replaced by Matt LeCroy.Analysis: Morneau will be re-evaluated after the game. The extent of his injury is unknown at this time."
  5. QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 11:41 AM) I don't think the team's 11-9 record is indicative of whether or not our team is playing like crap. If it was 9-11 and we'd lost those two anaheim games monday and tuesday, what would you say? I'll grant you that we were really damn lucky to win those games on Monday and Tuesday. But on the other hand...how many games have we lost this season on terrible luck? I'm thinking like those games in Oakland earlier this year where the umps went wild, or even yesterday when a GW grand slam went just foul. Monday we got lucky, but we also showed some heart and some talent. We came back after bullpen difficulties and still salvaged wins. Most teams aren't good enough to do that.
  6. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 06:37 PM) I can't believe how many times I've seen someone say that recently. I also can't believe that it's always true. Here's the question...can anyone remember a single series where we've played worse than these 3 games? Can anyone remember a series where any team has played this bad for 3 games and won 2 of them?
  7. Pods with a nice bunt single to lead off the game. Great to see him using his speed. It seems like its been a while. He better be on 2nd within a few pitches.
  8. And the Count strikes out the guy who homered against him last game. 22 pitches for Contreras in the first inning.
  9. Big out here...2 outs in the first, 1st and 2nd, McPherson up. Count did some good work on Anderson, but again the walks already look to be a question. At least he's getting ahead of most everyone he faces.
  10. Well...Contreras threw a fastball good enough to break A.J.'s glove...I think that's a good sign.
  11. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:56 PM) These are questions that you should ask yourself about Chavez before you blindly think he was on steroids (or his numbers won't return to career form) due to diminished numbers (I don't know the answers, either) and assess whether he would have value on our roster: 1) Does he appear physically diminished from prior seasons (a la Giambi's trimming down)? 2) Did his past levels of high offensive production stem from hits that a player on steroids would benefit from? 3) If he joins the White Sox, would this new environment prevent him from becoming a player similarly productive to his past self. 4. Are you confident enough that his past production will return to give up your top level prospects and take on a bloated contract?
  12. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) At this time any player with a huge dropoff in production is going to be suspected of Steroids. I think the fingerpointing shouldnt start until the season is over and the sample is more than 2 months. Fine...I won't start finger-pointing either, but something has made his production plummet like a rock tumbling off a cliff for the early part of this year. Just because I won't point fingers doesn't mean I immediately want to give up our #1 and #2 prospects to get the guy. That lineup just got Nick Swisher and Bobby Crosby back from the DL, so it has taken a step up. Jason Kendall has been down this year as well. If his problem is protection...that will fix itself pretty quick, and he should have a solid June. If his problem is something else, and he has another month hitting .230 (or .170 like he did in April), then you really have to start asking questions. Especially if your team is thinking of making a trade for him.
  13. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:53 PM) Chavez is more productive at the plate??? Have you looked at Konerko and Chavez's numbers this year? Thus far this year, Crede is outperforming Chavez.
  14. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:38 PM) 8.75, my bad so do you try to pull a deadline deal or just let him walk? You know...there may be a few clubs willing to give up a fairly large amount for a power-hitting 1b...Houston (If they're anywhere remotely close to the wild card), Atlanta come to mind off the top of my head.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:21 PM) his BA flutuates a bit, but his power numbers, OBP stay close to the same. I would say a change to our lineup on this team in this stadium is exactly what the doctor ordered, not to mention he is an improvement defensively and adds a left handed bat. Do those 3 year splits include this year's numbers (I think they do)? Because this year, he's been bad enough to start the season to make himself look like a slow starter.
  16. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) i hate reading stuff like this. this is a guy who has really carried this team for the last few years and he's a great guy. he's in a slump, ok, we know how that works. but he's also got talent and he works hard. this wont be 2003 again. Since I'm ragging on Chavez's ability to come out of a slump, I feel it only fair to fire the same question your way. Right Now Konerko has decided he wants to be a pull hitter and is out in front of almost everything. When he connects, it can fly a long way...but when he misses it, it becomes a double play or a foul ball. Paul has shown no indication he wants to try to shorten his swing, stay with a pitch, or drive something the other way. So I ask you, what reason do you have to think that this won't be another 2003 for Paulie?
  17. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:17 PM) Chavez will break out of it Are you guys willing to bet 4 losing seasons by the Sox that he will? Because if he doesn't snap out of it...if it is some sort of real problem, that would be the end result.
  18. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:15 PM) We have to remember its still June 1st, he WILL get his average up, esspecially if he wants out of Oakland this year. How exactly do you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he will?
  19. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:10 PM) Chavez is 28 Chavez has 167 HR Chavez has 566 RBI Chavez has 189 2B Chavez has a .350 OBP Chavez has a .273 AVG Crede is 27 Crede has 57 HR Crede has 207 RBI Crede has 76 2B Crede has a .302 OBP Crede has a .253 AVG hmm that whole thing about crede being better... im not too sure. Thus far this season, Chavez has put up worse numbers than Crede for a hell of a lot more money. If Chavez proves to me that he can come back from this terrible start (which he hasn't done yet), then I'll shut my mouth and not complain even if McCarthy becomes trade bait. But I cannot understand the logic of trading for a guy who looks like he has jumped off of a cliff and who is being paid $10 mil a year to do it. We'll pay the same price for him whether or not he turns it around, because of his career numbers. I say wait and see if he has a good June. If he does not, then that means he will have had 3 straight months of being a $10 million Joe Crede. Would you trade for that?
  20. Even without K-Rod, what exactly would the odds be of the White Sox pulling out 3 ninth inning wins in a row?
  21. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 12:03 PM) The one thing I would be willing to bet that Chavez can turn it around on the Sox is because he would have a lot more protection in this line up than what Oakland currently has... Yes, I'd be willing to bet he'd improve here also. But I would not be willing to bet Brandon McCarthy that he'll turn around.
  22. 1 thing I want people to keep in mind with Chavez is this... Right now, he's hitting worse than Crede. Crede is hitting .227. Chavez is hitting .218. Chavez's OBP is .276, Crede is at .286. Crede is slugging .368, Chavez is slugging a measly .317. Yes, Chavez plays better defense. But all of the people saying getting Chavez will certainly make us better no matter what would be wise to remember that he is doing a horrific job in the batter's box this season. Absolutely terrible. In other words, you're telling us to trade BMac or someone else very high on the list for a guy making $10 million or so a season and who is hitting worse than Joe Crede, because you're making the assumption that this is a temporary thing and not a full-time problem (i.e. long term injury, got off of steroids, or something like that.) I know Chavez has a record as a positive producer. But right now he is not playing like one. And the last thing I want is for us to be stuck with a guy earning $10 million a year who's career spirals downhill. If we made a deal and he did not return to form, we would be absolutely doomed. For years. We'd lose a ton of salary flexibility, and it would cost us a ton of prospects. You're betting a hell of a lot (the team's future for 5-10 years) on the fact that Chavez can turn it around.
  23. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 11:46 AM) this is a bad thing? I sure didn't think it was a bad thing...might lose something in the power numbers, but should gain a fair amount in average/OBP, and improve our defense at 1st as well.
  24. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 11:43 AM) Well...we would basically be replacing Paulie in the order for Chavez so..... Looks to be very close, but Chavez has a better OBP, doesnt clog the bases as much , high BA, and better fielding. Sounds like an upgrade to me. Let's not forget about the other side of that coin...we'd also be replacing Crede with Gload in the order.
  25. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 10:50 AM) The Nats are still very well in it though. And also, its their first season. They are more than likely not going to have a fire sale, no matter how far out they are. The Nats are not only in it, they're exactly 1.5 games back of the 1st place Braves and Marlins. And on top of that...guess what they've been struggling with? I'll give you a hint...we're in the same boat. There was like a 10 game stretch in a row over the last 2 weeks where the Nats scored less than 3 runs each game. The simple fact is that team will not be holding a fire sale, especially not their first year in existence, especially not on their offense, especially when they have a chance to make a run at the division, and especially when the thing holding them back from making a run at their division is their offense. No one should mention Vinny Castilla here again unless the Nats go into a major slump. That should be the end of the discussion. We might as well start talking about Rolen.
