Orioles Acquire Corbin Burnes for Ortiz/Hall/34th Pick
Balta1701 replied to DirtySox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This is why the White Sox will actually have pressure to trade Cease at the deadline this year if he's healthy, because 1 year of control is worth a lot less than 2. -

OMG you know what? The O's could get another pick in that same range next year if Holliday comes up and does the same thing. They could have 1 compensatory late first pick in 2024 and 2 in 2025. -

Based on the fact that he had 1 year of control, the Brewers are consistently willing to move guys like this, and Woodruff being hurt made their team on the field this year look way weaker. They moved Hader when they were in first place, of course they were going to be willing to move Burnes. It always made sense that they'd consider it. Insider reports aren't carved into stone tables. -

Naw, Getz set an appropriate price for a guy that they weren't forced to move. Waiting to see if someone becomes desperate is fine. -

Maybe we remember this the next time we're playing the "Insider said so" game? -

He traded a 2024 Sandwich pick (are they still called that?) for a likely 2025 Sandwich pick (barring injury). Or compensatory pick, or whatever. -

And if it works, heck maybe they're doing that search next offseason coming off a WS appearance or title. Oh, and they get an extra 2025 draft pick out of this. Or maybe someone from their system steps up, or a surprising trade becomes available. Stranger things do happen with pitchers. Or maybe they decide to make an all-in move for a pitcher at the deadline. Either way, it fills their need well at a low price. -

But they can absolutely rethink things next offseason, or even at the trade deadline if they have to. This is what they needed - a solid starter obtained without giving up any of their top flight prospects. -

Counting the draft pick, they have up to 19.5 potential years of player control coming back for a guy they had 1 year of control of, in a season where they were already hurting. This is the exact kind of move the Brewers always make - if they get a high level reliever out of this and a decent infielder, they're good, that reliever is a guy they can use for 4 years and then trade. -

No, but it completely satisfies the Orioles need for pitching and does so without sacrificing their best prospects. The fact that Burnes and Bieber were both likely available was an obvious thing that would undercut the market for Cease, they would be available for a much lower prospect price. -

No, and this is a smart move for both teams. The Orioles address a need with guys they didn't have room for. The Brewers get depth and control for a guy with little control - when they were already down Woodruff. -

Naw, it's not, this type of deal coming through for Burnes was an obvious reason why a strong deal for Cease was always unlikely. -

The Brewers do this stuff all the time if they are adding control. They gave up Hader in 2022 with a 3 game lead in the division. Doing something like this was obvious. -
They used that to delay some of his money to the end of the season. It was Rick Hahn's way of being tricky and moving some money onto 2024, much like Backloading Benintendi's deal. They were going to be successful in 2023 so they'd have more money to work with by the end of the year, because Rick Hahn was an expert at building baseball teams and knew what he was doing. FWIW, at the trade deadline, a team picking him up would have been on the hook for a tiny bit over $6 million if the White Sox contributed nothing.

I think some amount of underground parking beneath the next buildings is feasible and probably pays for itself here as it would also support the rest of the development on the site. I’m sure JR would be excited to own that. However, it’s going to be naturally limited on site just by the nature of it being surface streets. It probably will happen in some form.

I'd disagree, I think that Cease has plenty of benefit in performing really well going into free agency. Dylan Cease with two excellent seasons the next two years is potentially Gerrit Cole money. Dylan Cease with a couple disappointing seasons might be what, 1/3 of that?

I agree and have been expecting that. However, Texas also traded for Chapman in the middle of last season, so they're clearly willing to tolerate that to some extent.

John Angelos to Sell O's to 2 Other Billionaires
Balta1701 replied to cuban_sammiches's topic in Pale Hose Talk
WTF seriously? Tampa Bay spent $73 million last year. Baltimore $60 million. For the Orioles this may rise to $81 million in 2024. 2024 Projected Red Sox payroll potentially $200 million (https://www.pressherald.com/2024/01/20/red-sox-brass-expects-lower-payroll-in-2024/). But a day may come when Boston has the 4th highest payroll in the division? When exactly will this day be? -
The Rangers making this move right now would also be rather bizarre. While they could use starting pitching right now, it is reasonable to expect that one or both of DeGrom and Scherzer could be available in the second half. They still have to get through the first half, but paying a big prospect price when they have a decent likelihood of starting help in the second half and for the playoffs doesn't seem like a very smart strategy. Similarly, they're going to have to at least try DeGrom in 2025 with the money he's making. This is the kind of place that should sign a Clevinger or something like that.

For a good long while the Cubs were owned by the publicly traded Tribune Co. I can specifically recall how one of their earnings reports in 2004 wound up having to specifically cite the buyout of Sammy Sosa's contract as an expense affecting their bottom line. Sometimes the motivations get a bit different, there's less willingness to go into debt for any reason for a team like that for example, income might be required to stay in the black. I don't think though that it affected the way the GM was thought of - the GM is basically still in charge of the baseball side. There's little reason for example to believe that the Mets new president is directly involved in their efforts to try to secure a casino associated with Citi field for Cohen, it might affect the budget he has to work with but nothing else. -
But...and hear me out...he has played for the Royals.

I'd have to imagine some amount of parking would be built at this site but would probably be in coordination with whatever else is being built. Digging a deeper hole for a parking garage might actually find you some of the fill you need for the stadium foundation, but you'd have to make sure you had watertight walls. You could then potentially throw a hotel or apartments on top of that.
