Having some familiarity with White Sox fans expecting the guys we have to improve without a good reason, I think you’re expecting guys to improve without good reason. For example - yes Stassi is a defensive upgrade from Grandal, but less so from Zavala. However offense does matter, and Stassi compared to Grandal is a loss of like 50 points of OBP from the 29th ranked OBP in the league. And Lee, well I don’t know if he can be as bad as he was last year, that sounds like a serious challenge. Benintendi might be a little better with slugging if his wrist was a problem (this still bugs me because no one ever says we shouldn’t sign a guy who hurt his wrist but then it immediately becomes an excuse if they struggle), but he had another problem - his defense fell apart as the season went on. I didn’t expect this from him and am uncertain why he suddenly went from average to terrible, can you tell men if you’re saying his D will get better id like to know why. A bounce back from Yoan, sigh I’m sure I wrote last offseason why that was too optimistic. Improvement from Vaughn - I will believe it when I see it, we heard last year that the new coaches would make a difference and they just made him chase more. The bench is better? Who is the bench? The same guys as last year right? Right now on paper I will give you Lopez as better than the awful 2b they ran out last year, that sorta balances Burger being gone. Otherwise it’s the same optimistic stuff that didn’t work last year. I will give some Credit for saying that it might get to 70 wins, rather than saying it could challenge for the division like people said last year.

For the Position players to be better - the changes so far are Sheets is the starting RF, Nicky Lopez is the starting 2b, Stassi is the starting C, and DeJong is the starting SS. Burger is also gone. The only spot that looks like an actual upgrade is, and this is pretty amazing - Nicky Lopez is better than what the White Sox ran out at 2b last year. Sheets was awful and hasn't been replaced. Anderson was awful and was replaced by a guy who was almost as bad. Stassi and Grandal were equally bad. I'd actually take last year's lineup solely because of Burger being present for part of the year, as of now.

No one who watched the White Sox last year thought these guys were unlucky though - across the entire lineup there was a systematic reason why they stank. They all followed the same script - get more aggressive, put the ball in play, don’t worry about patience or being selective. Even the guy who made this work based on his physical gifts has the same flaw. Eloy is not going to be a better player by getting more aggressive and beating the ball into the ground. Vaughn got more aggressive and got worse. Anderson has one of the lowest launch angles in baseball and was super aggressive. They were swinging at everything regardless of whether it was a strike. Highest swing rate in baseball, easily the highest rate of swinging at pitches out of the zone. They had an OBP rivaling the Royals for a reason. These guys got worse because they had a bad approach, it was being taught at an organizational level. Has anyone heard Chris Getz say a single thing about having a better approach, being more patient, being smarter, controlling the plate, taking bad pitches, or any of that? Naw, he’s talked about bunting. While I will cut him some slack on the personnel, so far there has been no sign that they consider this a problem they need to fix or understand how it is their biggest offensive issue. Eloy will not suddenly get better if he is more aggressive next year but bunts more.

I wonder if they were in on Stassi.

I like the fact that the upgrade over Benintendi is Benintendi and the upgrade over Eloy is Eloy and that’s almost half the projected improvement. And yeah I can’t even tell who is projected in RF.

The problem obviously is that the players can't "Go Elsewhere". Probably a majority of even the Yankees roster has been assembled through methods other than free agency - the draft and trades, where players can't pick where they go. Juan Soto wants to grow a beard this year and demands his release from the Yankees as a consequence. Are the Yankees going to comply?

Let’s also note that a lot of guys on the Yankees do not choose to be there. They are drafted by them or are traded to them without their consent. Juan Soto currently has no control over where he plays next year. They may put on a show because they’re professionals but that doesn’t mean they like it.

I see zero reason to think that giving Jerry Reinsdorf money translates to wins. In fact it is the opposite. Since 2012 attendance has been so low that he triggered one of his amazing clauses with his landlords that dramatically drops the fee he pays to the state. Did this extra money enable him to increase payroll and get better, pushing attendance back up? Naw not at all, instead he used it as a way to have no pressure to fill the stadium. His fees are low when no one comes, so he can employ an endless line of underqualified yes men and sycophants, and let the entire experience deteriorate for everyone. This has gone on for more than 10 years, so clearly it isn’t helping the fans or creating an experience people want. And hell, go back farther - he had such a secure revenue stream from his ballpark and parking lots and such low fees that he led the owners in violating federal labor law during the strike of 1994 to try to break the union rather than negotiating in good faith, costing the best White Sox team of that decade a chance at the playoff birth they would have gotten (and maybe spoiling one of the best World Series ever as I still want to watch those Sox against the Expos). They gave him all this money and the lack of pressure to create revenue allowed him to become a bottom feeder, a leech. He doesn’t have to win, he has very low ballpark fees and can endure on revenue sharing dollars, so he doesn’t have to interview outside GMs or listen to anyone who doesn’t tell him how great he is. Maybe trickle down wins isn’t a working political philosophy, instead it has left him to trickle down on the fans.

Outside of some of the basics (reworking streets, etc), I am opposed to further substantial amounts of taxpayer money going to support Jerry Reinsdorf's family and the other owners. They took the city and state to the cleaners in the last deal. Under no circumstances should the city of Chicago fund a new stadium for this billionaire. He can absolutely pay for it himself. It's the third largest city and media market in the country, this should absolutely be profitable for him. If he can't make it profitable, then he should sell to someone who can or go bankrupt.
