  1. As for Linebrink, beware of any reliever discarded by Padres GM Kevin Towers. There's no doubt that Linebrink benefited by pitching half his games at expansive Petco Park (18-4, 2.63 ERA in 130 career appearances there) and by pitching in the National League. Now he has to pitch against tougher lineups in the AL. Linebrink wasn't trending well, either: 3-5, 5.23 over his final 33 games. From a Boston newspaper...
  2. btw, that was a jason stark article on the front page of espn.com
  3. So salary wise, Cabrera and Linebrink equal Garland? Garland = ~12mil Cabrera = 9mil -Cash = 1.5mil Linebrink=4.75mil
  4. Fields, Owens, and DLS.... I would do it in a heartbeat Would the Marlins? I dont think so. They probably would with Gio too...
  5. Well, here's the Marlins' asking price: Four players, none of them with more than three years of big league service, all with a similar profile to the young future superstars the Twins are asking for Santana. There is one major difference between Cabrera and Santana, however: Cabrera is two years away from free agency. So a team trading for him wouldn't also have to throw 150 million bucks at him -- yet -- because the Marlins have no plans to allow any negotiating windows. But the price in talent is still so steep that the Angels would probably have no choice but to include Howie Kendrick and their top pitching prospect, Nick Adenhart. The Dodgers would almost certainly have to build their deal around Kershaw and James Loney. The Giants would be likely to have to give up either Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum, but might not have enough position-player prospects to get this done. And the White Sox have the opposite problem. Center fielder Jerry Owens and third baseman Josh Fields would be a good fit for Florida's needs, but the Sox might be short on the arms the Marlins are looking for, especially after dealing away Jon Garland this week.
  6. EVERY YEAR some players have breakout seasons. Next year it could be Patterson, maybe, maybe not. Again, buying free agents at their peak will typically not yield great results. The players have no margin for error. If they play well, it was expected, if not then they are a bust. (See: Ben Wallace) I believe the Sox need to take gambles on high potential / high risk FA's. The turnaround, most likely, is not going to come strickly from our farm system. And we sure as heck wont be able to turn around the team signing the most sought after FA's. Without taking some of these risks and seeing some of them pay off, I find it extremely unlikely that the Sox make the playoffs. I welcome other points of view.
  7. Call me crazy, but I would much rather take a chance on a younger and faster Corey Patterson for 3-4 years at $15-25 million than Hunter, Rowand or Jones that would cost more than twice as much. Buying high for Hunter or Rowand makes no sense financially given the years that each of them has left in their prime. Patterson may not be as consistent, but this is exactly the kind of guy who could end up putting all-star numbers with a contract that would allow other needs to be filled.
  8. So do you guys think he is kicking himself for not making the Renteria deal? Does this mean that other plans have fallen through, causing him to revisit dealing Garland?
  9. While I appreciate everything Garland gave to the organization I always thought he was a "me-first" player. Besides the obvious whining and snubbing of White Sox fans, I had the unfortunate experience of meeting Jon and Kip Wells on a road trip to Cleveland in 2001. While no player has the obligation of talking with fans, Jon was arrogant and unfriendly to me and my father. Remember, at that point, he was only 21 years old or so. Everyone has bad days and maybe this was one for Garland, but in all my experiences with him and memories of him dealing with the press, I will not miss him at all.
  10. Does anyone think there is a chance that the Sox sign Hunter and Shannon Stewart for LF? Gosh it would be the Chicago version of the Twins with Hunter, AJ and Stewart...
  11. It isn't always in the best interest to sign/trade for players coming off of their best years. While that is obvious, it seems like all everyone talks about is signing those very players. Some of these pitchers coming off of injuries will put up good seasons. While there is certainly risk involved, it is worthwhile to take a chance on these kind of players as the risk/reward can be great...
  12. Ok, if not Colon, then what about Matt Clement?
  13. Should we have to trade away Garland/Danks/Floyd, would it make sense to take a 1 year flier on Colon? We know Kenny has always liked him, and heck, he might be worth the risk for 1 yr 8 mil. Am I nuts?
  14. I love Konerko and realize his significance to the franchise. That being said, he is owed a lot of money and his back is deteriorating. As I type this I am reading the quote above that says "A good GM trades a player one year too early. A bad GM trades a player one year too late." I think this applies to Pauly as much as anyone. Next year he might not have much value at all.
  15. Do you guys think that any deal for Cabrera would have to include Fields?
  16. Wow. This season is actually getting me excited.. When is the last time the Hawks beat Detroit twice in the first month of the season? When is the last time they won back to back games when they weren't out of the race? Could this season be different guys?
  17. Are you KIDDING me? They scored with 2 seconds left to tie it up?
  18. Guys, as much as we all love Rowand, would he even be worth it? We can expect him to hit .275-.280 with approx 20 homers, 75-80 rbi's and solid fielding and a great clubhouse presence. That being said, given his age and his expected salary demands, I question how wise of a signing it would end up being in 2-3 years.... Thoughts?
  19. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 11:01 AM) It has to be virtually impossible for KW to deal Fields right now. What if he could get a Carl Crawford type player? Or another all star type? I am not saying it is likely, but we shouldn't put it past him...
  20. We have all been shocked in the past by what KW does. Is it out of the question that he could move Danks and/or Fields this offseason if an All Star or near all star player was available? Nothing surprises me anymore, that is why I brought up the idea of trading Jenks a few months back. So if we could get a big enough haul, would it be worth it for the chance to compete for another title with guys like Konerko/Thome/Dye?? What about Fields and Danks for Carl Crawford? Add Rowand or Hunter to the mix would bring a pretty potent outfield (Dye, Crawford, Hunter/Rowand) Have I lost my mind, or am I being semi-realistic?
  21. Andruw Jones - if I am remembering correctly, KW tried trading for him a few years back...
  22. Wasn't Quentin practically UNTOUCHABLE about 1 or 2 years ago? Amazing
  23. A team like Carolina, who minus Mike Minter and Chris Harris would of been SOL at the safety position.
