White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/12/05
Greg Hibbard replied to nitetrain8601's topic in 2005 Season in Review
interesting stat....White Sox are 63-15 when scoring at least 4 runs (if my math is right) -
Cleveland's schedule down the stretch

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:48 AM) Which means we would have to go 17-32 for the Indians to catch us. That isn't really that scary. True, I just found it surprising that it seems LIKELY that they'll win 90 games... -

Here's the thing though - Cleveland's record against playoff contenders (NYY, Bos, Chi, Oak, LAA) - 15-25 Cleveland's record against all other teams - 48-27 (.640 clip) They play all the other teams 38 out of 47 games. .640 * 38 = 24 wins, 14 losses .375 * 9 = 4 wins, 5 losses (rounding up one win) 28 wins + 63 wins currently = 91 wins. Not to be beating math to death in this thread, but that's kinda scary. -
Cleveland's schedule down the stretch

My point is this - we lose 3 or 4 games on them in August and suddenly they're only 8 or 9 back with 6 games left to play against us and a MUCH, MUCH easier schedule otherwise... -
Cleveland's schedule down the stretch

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) Remember when Cleveland had that great run about a month ago where they won like 10 straight and gained about 2 games? They looked good then, too. But, they suddenly went into the crapper and fell far out again. I suspect they'll do the same here. They only lost 2 series from June 7th through the all star break, and one was getting swept vs. the Red Sox and the other was losing 3 of 4 at NYY. -

Wow, I had no idea that Tampa was 15-11 since the All Star Break. Hopefully they can play like that vs. the Tribe....but they've also lost four straight... -
3 vs. Tampa 3 vs. Texas 3 vs. Baltimore 4 @ Tampa 3 @ Toronto 3 vs. Detroit 3 @ Minnesota 3 @ Detroit 3 vs. Minnesota 3 vs. Oakland 3 vs. KC 3 @ Sox 4 @ KC 3 vs. Tampa 3 @ Sox Whoa...ten against the D-Rays? 7 against the Royals? 15 more against the scuffling Orioles, Tigers and Twins? The only playoff bound teams are Oakland, who they have at home, and us. Wow, they could go on a serious roll here...maybe this division isn't as secure as we thought... EDIT: sorry, slightly off...forgot one royals game

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 01:47 PM) It's the equating of homosexuals as being child molesters that is most ignotant and alarming... aside from the fact that Ozzie can't figure out that those are not the kind of cracks to make in a dugout full of reporters. :headshake Why does everyone say that he's equating the two? He threw two different insults at the guy. The way I read it he called him one name and then the other...not "homosexual and a child molester" or "homosexual child molester" but "he's a homosexual! he's a child molester!"

QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 12:30 PM) 97ish, I say. so you think they go 3 under .500 for the remaining 49 games?
-
with all the pessimists here no one thinks the sox are going to win less than a hundred.... ??????????????

wow, 107+ getting a lot of love.

FWIW, if you're telling me all we have to do to keep Oakland out of the playoffs is lose the last game of the season to the Tribe, I'm with that notion in a heartbeat. Maybe it's bad karma, but I'll take my chances with the Red Sox or Angels before the A's.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 09:22 AM) Well..maybe I should have read your whole post before I responded. You can definitely rest a few guys to get ready for the playoffs but that's different from just laying down and losing the game. Yeah, but the point is that the perception is gonna be that the Sox are giving the games to the Tribe because they don't want to face Oakland...who knows, the A's could take over the division lead for good and this could be moot. I guess my point is that the Sox might have an effect on who they face in the playoffs because they are facing a WC contender when they will likely be resting starters for the playoffs.
-
What is wrong with resting starters the last two days to get them ready for the playoffs if there is literally nothing to play for? The same thing in the NFL came up last season with the final game of the year affecting whether certain teams went to the playoffs...and some in the WC hunt were playing teams who had wrapped up home field throughout and were resting starters.
-
If the Tribe and A's are within a game in the wildcard going into the last series, would you endorse the Sox laying down and giving Cleveland the series to keep Oakland out of the playoffs? I don't mean that the Sox give the Tribe the games by throwing them...but say every starter is rested and the "C" squad of september callups playing against the Tribe for the whole last series. I know I don't want to see Oakland in the playoffs with as hot as they've been....I'm sure the team and the manager feels the same way. Is it unethical to do something like this? It's a problem that's likely to come up. We play the Tribe 6 times in the last 12 days of the year and it's very likely that the Sox will have clinched by then. Those six games will go a long way to determining who is in and who is out of the playoffs....
-
Take off your "we haven't won anything yet" hats for a second and play along...how many games do you think the Sox win? I figure the worst the Sox can go for the last 49 is .500. Really, I don't think much worse is possible. We are playing Minnesota (10-18 since break), Detroit (11-16 since break) and KC (8-18 since break, lost last 12 in a row) a total of 24 times (half our games!) and those teams have pretty much given up on the season. Granted we still have a few tough series in a row here (although I don't really consider the punchless Twins a "tough" series anymore). Yes, I'm aware that Detroit and Kansas City both beat us the last time we faced them, but did you really expect the Sox to go 19-0 against the Royals and 18-1 against the Tigers? We were bound to lose at least one series. I don't think it'll happen again. I think we win 101 games, maybe even more. What about you?

can we christen this the "winning s***ty" team yet
