Abreu's contract - $ / fWAR - best value in MLB?
Greg Hibbard replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Now at 4.6 fWAR per 162 during this contract, his highest average by far over any three year span in his career. -
Yeah, it does matter. Anything could happen in two months. Look at the Yankees and Red Sox on this list: Top ten teams in the AL's records since July 1: Seattle 26-13 (.666) Baltimore 25-13 (.658) Houston 27-15 (.642) White Sox 25-17 (.595) Guardians 24-20 (.545) Rays 21-18 (.538) Blue Jays 18-20 (.474) Twins 16-19 (.457) Yankees 16-23 (.410) Red Sox 14-26 (.350) It's a long season.

Sox record with Anderson, Vaughn, Jimenez, Robert starting…
Greg Hibbard replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They may be injury prone, but I don’t think it is too much to ask to have them both healthy for the same half of a year. If we can get Robert back and Eloy stays healthy, this team could finally have all the offensive firepower they need to win consistently. You can get away with Moncada and Grandal being inconsistent and / or bad with 5 guys (with Abreu) clicking in the lineup. -

.595 record since July 1. -
It’s only happened 9 times this season. April 10, April 13, April 15, April 16, July 6, July 12, July 13, August 4th, August 5th. White Sox are 8-1 with a combined score of 44 runs to the opponents’ 22. The Opponents: Cleveland (2-0), Minnesota (1-0), Detroit (2-0), Seattle (1-0), Tampa (1-0), Texas (1-1). Now imagine if we had those 4 in the lineup for even 50 games this year.

Incredible win. So many things went right - and we are down Robert and Anderson. If we could just get fully healthy… -

Great inning. This was the first genuine fire from this team I’ve seen this year. -
24-17 since July 1st. Guardians are 22-19 since then, Twins are an abysmal 15-19. Sox have 47 games left and if they all go at the same percentage they have since July 1 Sox catch and virtually tie the guardians in late September. This is going down to the final week no matter what.

The problem with this could still be sample size. His age 25 “season” was 52 games. His age 27 “season” is 68 games so far. His age 26 season was honestly just fine. He had 4 WAR that year. I still think a guy who hits the ball as hard as Moncada and has his talent doesnt just mysterious lose everything and fall off of a cliff in his mid to late 20s. Whatever is going on with him - it will change and he will turn a corner. It may not be what we thought he was in 2019, but a 3-4 WAR player is just fine.

I think what’s frustrating most of all though, and an important thing for us all to keep in mind, is that baseball also is and has been largely set up so that the biggest spenders really have been able to buy their way into positions to win a championship. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Cardinals have won 11 of the last 25 championships. The Dodgers are always in the championship series or World Series now- and have been there many times before. The Giants are traditionally winners. Historically, those 5 organizations have won collectively over half of all the World Series. Over half. The rest of us have fought for scraps. It’s just set up that way. Which is why I think the mentality of “championship of bust” is toxic to fandom in baseball. We don’t have a salary cap and we don’t have revenue sharing. The rich always seem to get richer in this game. I know the ownership of the Sox does deserve blame for not making good decisions but it seems in mlb there’s no grace. Unlike football where even a buffoonish organization like the bears can back into a super bowl appearance accidentally every 20 years ?

Can we possibly reframe the disappoint people rightfully feel? Aren’t there any injuries this season that people don’t blame the players / organization for? if so, how many games have we lost to those injuries? I just don’t accept it’s not some. And yet in these threads we just talk about the under performing. Or we talk about how it’s the training staff or scoutings fault that unanticipated, freak injuries and illnesses happen…which I just don’t accept. Injuries and illnesses just…happen. Do we blame the Yankees scouting and organization every time Stanton goes down for a few weeks? And even if it’s just 3 games we have lost to injury, well…that’s the difference between us being 55-53 and 58-50. The latter is an 87 win pace. Food for thought. And, if they are capable of sustaining playing at the recent 20-14 clip we have seen, that’s a 95 win pace. as much as it’s gonna suck for everyone to read this statement: the jury is still out on the 2022 Sox. For anyone wanting to pile on and just be done, I sincerely apologize.

I think it’s utterly sad that some of our fans think the last 250 plate appearances are the real Moncada…. vs the previous 2250 plate appearances in which he hit .260/.770 with stellar defense. Maybe he’s having a bad year for many different reasons, and I share the frustration. However, based on the previous sample size of nine times as many plate appearances, and based on the fact he is not even close to 30 yet, I think I’ll continue to believe he will eventually be much better than he’s been this year. Maybe it’s next year, I don’t know. But I think I’ll take my chances believing that.

His BABIP is still 90 points below his career average.
-
I think this is a bad six weeks for his power numbers/home runs and as soon as he starts hitting homers again his fWAR will be just fine.

18-12 in their last 30.

It’s the Black Flag year. “anyone who thinks this roster can’t make up three games is crazy…” Jerry is trolling us on the 25th anniversary of the White Flag.
