  1. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 06:59 PM) Playing in a team sport has greatly altered my life, just think about how you learn to communicate, work as a team, achieve goals, deal with failure, with success, etc. I'm not saying everyone has to play baseball or one specific sport, but children should be encouraged to play some sort of sport throughout their life. Providing these opportunities to everyone is crucial imo, not saying that all the bad players need to be on the team, but a secondary team/league should be encouraged, or go find another sport to participate in. That's always been the way, and I think it has worked.
  2. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 06:27 PM) It is only useless, extra work if you do not believe sports makes a positive influence on someone. If you believe participating in sports makes a positive impact on a young person, it isn't useless. Not even close. That sounds like it's straight from an after-school special, or at least Lifetime.
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 05:46 PM) This type of post is ridiculous and becoming all too common around these parts. So anyone who hated it is some nerd who writes pages about hating it, but anyone who sat back, relaxed, and strapped it down (and enjoyed it, of course) is just simply able to enjoy tv! The whole ambiguity thing in movies/TV is getting out of hand. No, not everything needs to be spelled out, but there ought to be an effort to provide enough plot or dialogue so that an intelligent fan can draw a logical conclusion. Lost was just a series of random events designed so that it got people interested, but the writers didn't have a complete story in their heads and predictably couldn't provide explanations for a ton of things. As a counterpoint, I'll say the Sopranos. We didn't see Tony die, but given all of the events/hints/common sense, it is possible to logically draw that conclusion.
  4. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 04:37 PM) Budgets are a concern. The uniforms were shared and we couldn't always get appropriate games for them. Our athletic coordinator "took one for the team (coaches)" and coached them himself, saving the school a coaches stipend. They only had one referee working their games. To save on travel time, they also played a shorter game. We do budget for football A and B teams and boys basketball A, B, and C teams. Girls volleyball also has a C team, but IIRC basketball stopped at a B team. Track is a zoo. And all of that useless, extra work could have been avoided with a few simple words. You're cut because you aren't good enough. Go train on your own and try again next year.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 03:41 PM) Using slang terms for female genitalia as an insult is sexist. It has nothing to do with being omniscient or perfect. Then I'm sexist. I wish people would stop being such p*****s about it.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 02:36 PM) Go read Steve's post again if you'd like. It wasn't an inspired discussion, it was him deciding what the article was about without reading it. When all else fails, resort to the pedantic. No one said the exact words "6-7 year olds should be cut". That is true. If you want to take that and interperet it to fit your needs, go right ahead. But everyone reading this thread understood those posts just fine. That this is only news because it's a girl? I bet if I asked around in only my immediate area, I can find stories of young boys being cut. But a girl was cut from a boys team and somebody better burn a cross on that coach's lawn.
  7. I'm actually starting to get excited. It feels so good to be at a game in the early part of the season. The feeling of the cool air and knowing that the whole summer is yet to come. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 12:21 PM) I have a feeling buying them on Stub Hub this season the day before or of game is going to equal lots of cheap games this year. No doubt.
  8. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 11:23 AM) Oh please elaborate on this. That was simply me impersonating greg.
  9. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 11:01 AM) Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Sources: Cespedes likely to visit #Marlins in Miami within the next week. #Cubs, others remain deeply involved. #MLB I thought they said that Cespedes wasn't interested in Miami?
  10. The only guys from the last few years that really deserve statues are Buehrle and Konerko, as others have said. AJ doesn't deserve one, but he definitely deserves one more than the rest of the players (minus Thomas, Buehrle, and Konerko) from the last 10 years.
  11. I'd have murdered an entire family to nail her when I was 17. Today, I'd still probably kick a few puppies.
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) Very definitely not, as evidenced by some of the stories here, like the one in the article. But as a parent, you sure do have a different perspective on kids' sports. Seems kind of obvious, doesn't it? I do think it is interesting, most of the people posting in here about being reasonable and fair with young kids, have kids... and the people who seem to like the idea of 1st graders getting cut to field a more competitive team don't. I never said anything about that. I don't know when they should start being competitive (I guess around 4th grade?), but this is only a story because it's a girl. It's a girl on a boys team. If her parents are so concerned, they should start up a girls league. Otherwise, tough s***.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 01:58 PM) So now that you have kids, and some others do not, that immediately qualifies you to be like the youth sports overlord? Or is it because you umpired when you were in HS? Who do you think you are that you can determine who gets to have an opinion on something and whose commentary is worthy of posting? Plus we all know that once you have a kid, you automatically become a good parent.
  14. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) JJ Abrams says "Stop asking questions." There are definitely a lot of conveniences for the cops. We have to find the kidnapper! Oh hey I just found a piece of paper that says he worked for a cement company that made bunkers and there's only one in this area! We have to find the sniper! Oh hey I just found a scope in his cell and even though you can see an entire side of San Fran, he must have gone to one of these 2 tall buildings in this photo! J.J. Abrams is very impressive when you're willing to give him every benefit of the doubt and basically do all of the work for him. Otherwise, he's a hack that throws s*** at a wall and people think he's the cleverest person in history because of his glasses or some s***.
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 12:11 PM) LOL, the seagull posting in here is awesome. Let's see how you feel after you have kids. No one is saying they shouldn't keep score. They are saying that maybe 1st graders shouldn't have to worry yet about being cut from their f***ing little league team. Someone start a girls league, then people won't b**** when a girl is cut from a boy league. And seriously, buy the kid a f***ing sundae and she won't even care anymore. It's the parents that are b****es.
  16. The fact that things like this are even news just shows how big of p*****s we are anymore.
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 11:20 PM) I'm saying he obviously has a way better reputation than Sox fans who have fried him on here give him credit for since he landed another big league job so quickly. The guy obviously puts in the work and has a decent philosophy. It's not necessarily his fault if the guys with the bats in their hands don't listen and/or fail. And neither is it Ozzie's fault. But you bet your sweet ass it's KW's fault.
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 08:49 PM) When Ice Cube left NWA they went after him and in Real n****z called him "Benedict Arnold" in one of their lines, he replies in a song called "No Vaseline", it just is kind of a stark contract to the Ice Cube of today. I know "No Vaseline" actually.
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 08:01 PM) Ukrainian women know how to protest. The Occupy movement could learn a lesson or two about getting world wide attention. Expound?
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 03:57 PM) Ice Cube has been through a lot, from NWA to Benedict Arnold to movie career. Go figure. Benedict Arnold?
  21. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 30, 2012 -> 09:55 AM) That's cool. I don't like the thought of having to dread Zombie Konerko coming to the plate. Probably good news for VIciedo too, who will proably end up taking over 1B. Doesn't sound like he's going to try to part-time it to stretch it to 500 homeruns or anything. Which is probably good -- I mean, I'd love to see him in the HOF, but he seems like the kind of guy that would be one of the posterchildren for the impending new wave of guys that have some 'automatic' milestones but aren't getting in, like Johnny Damon. But that's alright. I'm sure he'll be content with a statue and ceremony at USCF. What automatic milestone does Johnny Damon have? You mean if he gets to 3,000?
