Anyone ever see Pelle The Conqueror? I started watching it weeks ago, got sidetracked, and finally got back to it last night (I kept putting it off because it's two hours and 40 minutes). I should have watched it sooner. Subtitled movies always go by much quicker. I really like Max Von Sydow, but it occurred to me while watching it that I confused him with a few other actors growing up. In my mind, all of these actors might as well have been the same person for years: Von Sydow, Peter O'Toole, Ian McKellen, and Christopher Plummer. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Jan 13, 2012 -> 02:06 AM) Since movies that come out in December belong to both years (IMO)- Went to go see Sherlock. Best movie I've seen in a theater since Dark Knight. Robert Downey Jr. is better as Sherlock than he is as Tony Stark, and he's pretty good as Tony Stark. Two very similar characters, actually... Are they similar in the way they're written, or does Robert Downey, Jr. simply play them similarly? I like the guy, but a lot of his characters seem the same.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 08:38 PM) There's one where you have to give Guillen credit. He stuck with Alexei through the first 6 weeks of the 2008 season, didn't send him down to Charlotte, and that patience really paid off. My biggest concern is we really need a true CFer...and Cespedes isn't that. He reminds me of Vernon Wells, for some reason. Sending him down would be KW's call. -
QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 10:33 PM) Andruw Jones and Juan Pierre combined aren't half as embarassing as the Jason Schmidt signing. http://kosmo.hubpages.com/hub/Ten-Worst-Dodger-Bums The Dodgers have produced a number of quality players out of the draft, but seemingly always swing-and-miss when it comes to big ticket free agents. How much $$ did they throw at Juan Uribe and Jon Garland last season? This season its the same story. Bad players, garanteed MLB contracts. They also, similar to KennyGM, have a hankering for high salary deals with well-past-their-prime veterans like Garret Anderson, Luis Gonzalez, Elmer Dessens, etc. A Dodgers web site similar to this one once completed a 25-man roster of "mistake" FA signings of the past 10 years. There were no stretches or "well, maybe..." players on the list either. For s***s and giggles, I am gonna have to go dig that up. Always good for a laugh or two and puts our GM's "misses" into perspective. It's not surprising. Almost anyone could have told you that each name you mentioned would turn out to be a bad contract even before the signings.

It's going to be funny when he signs elsewhere. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 06:32 PM) These situations are nothing alike. Iraq was nowhere in the vicinity as far as Iran is right now, first of all. Second, it was mostly chem and bio weapons that we were supposedly targeting in Iraq. Third, even if it was the first line of excuse given to the public, it has since become crystal clear that the real reasons for invading Iraq were not at all about WMD. Now, that all said, I am not advocating invading Iran. I think that is a terrible idea. I think the sanctions are good and are working, more of them will work more, and honestly I am 100% OK with Israel or whomever picking off nuclear people over there to further slow them down. I have no issue with asymetrical warfare in this case. If an American scientist were blown up in a car bomb in order to slow us down from reaching a technology that others already had (especially if we weren't in open war with them), it'd be clear terrorism.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 01:49 PM) +1'ing him is like giving Bernie Madoff a recommendation. Actually, no, that's giving McGrad too much credit. I read about 3 lines of his post. All he does, and all he's ever done, is rip Reinsdorf. Jerry Reinsdorf could find a way to both spend more AND less money on the White Sox, win a World Series, find a cure for pancreatic cancer, and McGrad would still find something wrong with him. The fact that I am criticizing him right now, "behind" his "bac,k" is something he would blame on Jerry Reinsdorf. Don't +1 him again. Please. The best part is that I can almost hear him trying to hold himself back from saying "cheap Jew" or something along those lines.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 01:22 PM) Iran has *Not* yet decided to undertake a program to build a nuclear bomb. That was the conclusion of the National Intelligence Estimate a few years ago, and it remains true today. They have infrastructure that could be developed to allow them to do so over a 3-5 year period, if they chose to do so. Just as has been the case for the last 15+ years. If they chose to do so, then 1 of 2 things will happen. Either the IAEA will come screaming out of there that Iran has begun producing weapons grade material, or Iran will kick the IAEA inspections out permanently (and they still might well start screaming that Iran is producing weapons grade material, just from other measurements). Until one of those 2 things happens, Iran is not developing a nuclear bomb. Agreed. It seems that people are already willing to make the same mistake that occurred in Iraq. The whole "c'mon, they're definitely making nuclear weapons" theory.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 01:06 PM) I sure as Hell don't. If what the video appears to show is actually what happened, American soldiers will die because of this. Because they weren't before.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 01:13 PM) I'd recommend you be choosy as to whose posts you read. I can't really do that as an Admin, though I admit I do tend to scan some more than read them. I'll almost certainly just disappear again once the Republican candidate is chosen

I think that's hilarious.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 12, 2012 -> 11:58 AM) The tendency to have arguments go to extremes and hyperbole drives me batty. And yet, I keep coming back for more punishment. I think I need help. That, plus the fact that you know neither side is EVER going to say, "You know? You're right." You're lucky to see one side even admit the other has a point.

So, no change with his son. He'll end up dead by another person's hands eventually.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 10:04 PM) I'm not sure about the locking himself away part, I really only saw him in the bars. He was a huge fan of Belushi and used to joke about dying that way while we were all drinking. I heard the same thing. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 09:25 PM) Yeah, I was starting there when he was finishing. He was a legend in the bars. He was a great guy and absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately, it also lead to his downfall. It's a shame he had to leave us so soon. He lived in an apartment near us just up the street from Jeffery Dahmer but that's a whole different story. The guy I know said he would lock himself away for long periods of time, though. I'm guessing some kind of manic depression based on that. He also apparently read John Belushi's biography over and over. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 08:41 PM) White Sox Bulls | | | | | | v Bears The Bears and Blackhawks are probably my next two teams, but I really don't give two s***s about either of them. I watch when I'm with other people and I root for them, but it makes no difference to me whether they win or lose. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 08:54 PM) Its not\ entirely arbitrary. Its kind of like criminal law mens rea, terrorism is defined by the actors mind. If the goal is to use violence to instill fear, its terrorism, if that wasnt their goal, its not. Thus when a terrorist organization states that it was a terrorist attack, they have basically given you the reason for the attack. Conversely we dont even know who caused the explosion in this case. What if it was a spurned ex-lover, that wouldnt be terrorism, that would just merely be a homicide. The distinction between act of war and terrorism, is going to be somewhat arbitrary, because it is subjective, not objective. Does everything go back to law with you?

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 06:56 PM) Ditka, of course I do have a frame of reference for this as Farley was a drinking buddy at Marquette and that bit came up while at a bar (O'Donohue's) during the Bears Super Bowl season in 1985. Wow, that's pretty cool, as I know a guy that hung out with him a lot at Marquette as well. -
Should the Sox consider Dunn for Soriano?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 04:34 PM) Unfortunately, I have to see my Filipinas this weekend, haha. Looking forward to the white sand beaches...and to seeing Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia and Singapore for the first time. Can cross every Asian country off my bucket list (which also includes going to the observation deck of the 10 tallest buildings in the world, Petronas Towers will be 7, somehow I have to get to Dubai and Mecca for the top 2) except for the compelling vacation locales Myanmar and Bangladesh. I guess technically Bhutan, Brunei, Nepal (was on the Tibet side of Mount Everest) and India count, too. Next "big trip" will be India or Australia, perhaps Egypt if things cool down there a bit more. Japan in October. So sadly, will have to wait for Round 2 beginning of February, as needed. Mongolia? -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 04:29 PM) (Warning/disclaimer, the following tangent is not intended to completely derail the thread but posted merely for entertainment purposes in the dead of winter when fake Gavin Floyd trade rumors and Straw Man Arguments over KW are all that are left to entertain now that college bowl season is mercifully over). You would not believe how hot Sofia Vergara was as a blonde at age 20-25. I used to watch her on UNIVISION, there was a show called FUERA DE SERIE that came out with a new program nearly every weekend. Shakira. Esperanza Gomez (google is your friend). If you ever get a chance to go on vacation there (either the Caribbean Coast or Bogota/Cali/Medellin), it's the most beautiful country (overall) that I've ever been in...and it's really not as dangerous as Mexico, Thailand or Russia, not even close. My one year teaching there might have been the most fun I've had in my entire life. Just make sure you like futbol, dancing and drinking/fiestas (in no particular order). Would like to see J4L's recap posts after six weeks spent in Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina. That's like saying a murderous kidnapper with a knife isn't as dangerous as a murderous kidnapper with a gun, grenade, or baseball bat embedded with railroad spikes. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 06:09 PM) USS Cole bombing no longer a terrorist attack, then? For what it's worth, I agree with your line of reasoning so far. Terrorism is terrorism, even if it's the good guys doing it.
