What was the deal with tickets today?
sin city sox fan replied to hawksox13's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm not sure if it was the Sox organization or the league which instigated the change of days for this season, but I think its a very smart move. Placing these games on a Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will lead to 3 sellouts on days which might typically draw an average of 20-24,000 fans. Sure, it may take a bit longer to reach those sellouts...but that's an extra 50-60,000 seats sold which is great revenue for the Sox bottom line. -
QUOTE (since56 @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 08:46 AM) "IF" and I know it a big if considering his history ( at least with the Sox ) Peavy can come back strong by mid-may or early June can't we use Harrell as the fifth starter till then ? Usually the way schedule is set up early plus with cold or rain outs early how many starts does the number five guy get in the first two months? I say this because Sale is going to be needed in the bullpen. Our bullpen seems very thin and he would help very much there. Perhaps even as the closer leaving Thornton where we know he can succeed. What about resigning Freddy and making him a long reliever once Peavy returns? I know Freddy's not used to working out of the pen...but it could be a way to make sure his arm lasts a year (and gives us a good backup option in case any other starters end up on the DL)

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:43 PM) Jerry Reinsdorf is not a crazy rich old guy. He is very calculated in what he does. I think he is stretching things right now but he feels that the opportunity is their in this major market to make it work and turn in a profit. The business will probably take a loss, however, the Sox have continued to reinvest funds but at the same time have seen the franchise appreciate. I think Jerry knows that in his old age he wants to win and I'm guessing the rest of the ownership group does as well. They won't get crazy but I think at this point in time they felt these players were worth going "all in" for. What will happen with our bullpen, I don't know. But one thing about bullpens is they are much more of a crap shoot than offensive players. So with that said, I'm glad we invested our money in a guy that has been a relatively constent run producer throughout his career and I can hope that our young arms in the pen, along with Thornty, can pan out. If they don't, we can invest some money in the pen. My bigger concern to be quite frank is Peavy since we don't have a 5th starter as of now, especially if we are going with Sale in our pen. Plus, a healthy Jake Peavy (major if) makes this team a lot better. I think Jerry sees the Cubs struggling as well and wants to gain market share in a two team market. Sure there are many die hard Sox fans (like most everyone here) and there are many die hard Cubs fans. However, there are also many fans who jump on the bandwagon of whatever team might be winning. We saw that in 2005 and if we could win another World Series in the next couple of years (while the Cubs produce sub .500 teams), many of those non-diehard fans would be more supportive of the Sox than the Cubs. I think Jerry is the type of guy that would want to win no matter where he is...but he realizes it's even more important in a market with two teams and he wants to take this opportunity to gain market share.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:47 AM) People do this all the time, for a LOT less money. People do it in the everyday working world ALL of the time, and manage to live without their cousins turning into homeless people. Don't get up in front of the fans and say "I might go and play for some other team for less money. It's not necessarily about the money." Then you and your agent try to hold us up for $15 million a year. Nice Pauly. If he really wanted to hold us up for $15 million, the deal would not be done yet. I really think he gave us a discount of $2 mil + per season to stay here and that should be appreciated (not scorned). If Pena is worth $10 on the open market, Paulie could have gotten at least 50% more (and maybe $18 million per season if he hired Boras)

Even if he's not born in the United States, he's a White Sox fan which qualifies him to be president in my book

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) 135 HRs in 3 years? Not likely. Dunn however, might. Just hit 60 in 2011 and he'll only need 75 more over the next two seasons!
-
I don't see how anyone can complain that Paulie is overpaid based upon some of the other contracts dished out in baseball today. Besides, if Jerry goes out and gets a couple of good bullpen arms now (which I think he will), why should any of us care what it costs to fill a World Series contending roster? That's a matter for Chairman of the Board to be concerned about....not us as fans.

Damn....I wish we could have locked him for the next five years.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:27 AM) This is exactly what I'm worried about. I'm torn between the Konerko/reliever via trade and DLee/FA reliever options. I see pros and cons to both options. However, I'm really concerned that if we sign Konerko, KW is going to overpay for a reliever using Quentin. He may think with Konerko and Dunn he can afford to sacrifice some offense to strengthen the bullpen. I honestly think that would be a huge mistake. That's why I'm starting to lean towards the DLee option if KW can also get a legitimate right-handed setup man. I really don't think the Jerry will go cheap on the bullpen no matter what happens on the first base front. I think he saw what happened last year when we saved a few million on the DH spot and it cost us a division (and likely several hundred thousand in ticket sales). Jerry wants to win and will not make the same mistake twice. Also, I think he sees how down the Cubs are now and building a World Series team can help the Sox control more of the city's fan base. I think the only difference between signing Paulie and DLee is saving a few million on the payroll overall. I think our bullpen expenditure will be whatever necessary to round it out irregardless. Therefore, I'm hoping we get the contract done with Paul today....taking money out of the equation, I feel he's without a doubt the best fit for this club.

If nothing else, Teahan could always play first

Nothing wrong with Konerko asking for $15 million per season. We are probably offering $10 million at this time and the sides will probably settle somewhere around $12-13 million per season. Thats how negotiations work. If we offered $12 to begin with and they asked for $15....we'd probably end up closer to $14 million per season. Have some patience grasshopper....the deal will get done.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) yes, yes there is, Bridgette the Midget is the marquee name in that world. So I rented one of her videos tonite....she is one wild midget! I think the Cell should host a Bridgette the Midget Nite next year where one lucky fan spends the 7th inning stretch in a private suite with her!

Is it time to tear down Wrigley?

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Nov 22, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) Er, you guys realize, right, that the entire bleachers section is brand new? So there's no need to tear down that part of the stadium. Derelict Cub fans have covered them in urine and vomit so many time since than....I wouldn't want to sit in them. -

QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Nov 22, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) There is no way in hell that the Cubs are moving to Naperville. Unless Ricketts uses that threat as leverage to get state financing for a new park. And wouldn't that ring familiar? Threatening to move to Naperville would get them no leverage with the state. If they want to gain leverage with Illinois, they'll have to threaten a move to Gary, Indiana or Dubuque, Iowa -
I thought his idea of the Cubs and Sox exchanging GMs was crazy idea, but than I got to this point in the article.... It amazes me some of the crap that the Chicago newspapers allow their writers to publish. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/sc-sp...,3389440.column

Once again, can anyone point out in that article where Boras says that Manny is only seeking $5.5 million? His only comparison to Vlad is that he'll rebound like Vlad did. If any team called Boras now and offered $5.5 million, he'd probably hang up on them.
-
When I read that article, I see nothing from Boras that talks about Manny looking for a $5.5 million deal. He's only stating that Manny will rebound like Vlad....and I think the author rolled with it and added contract expectation. I'd be surprised if Boras is seeking anything less than $12-15 million at this time....and at that price, I'd pass.

Those chicks must be freaks in the bedroom....because I'm guessing Frank didn't sign them for their musical ability. (that song will never be a hit)

He says Chicago is as far east as Konerko would go....and than lists Tampa Bay as one of the three options? He also says Paulie will only sign with a team that has spring training near Phoenix....and than lists Tampa Bay as one of the three options? Now, I'm no geography wiz....but I believe Florida is east of Chicago. I also believe that Charlotte County, FL is nowhere near Phoenix. This writer must be on crack and should consider a new line of work.

If Konerko and Martinez sign for virtually the same money and we don't end up with Paulie, I'll be very disappointed in White Sox management. Victor is a good player, but I would take Paulie over him any day of the week.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 3, 2010 -> 02:52 PM) My ex girlfriend used to think I was crazy for watching MLB Network and the 2005 DVDs in the middle of winter. Notice I said ex girlfriend. If she had put out more often, I bet there would have been less DVD watching!

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 3, 2010 -> 02:21 PM) I teared up thinking that Paulie's last AB was sacrificed for Mark Kotsay. But Ozzie wanted him to leave with a hit. I think it was good to get him out before fans started to exit as well. He deserved the standing O and it wouldn't have been as strong with 50% of the crowd gone.
-
I don't think I've ever been so happy to see Kotsay enter the game before. Great job by the fans to give Paulie the reception he deserved when exiting the field. I still hope he's back next year......but as he said on Thursday, no matter what happens he'll always be remembered as a White Sox player to me.
