  1. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) Why? Because he is in the division? Mostly. People have been trying to pry Sweeney from the Royals for years, and the Royals continue to blow smoke up his ass about seriously rebuilding, and he continues to buy it. Sweeney hasnt gotten the World Series "Itch" yet, and seems really happy collecting paychecks with a hurt back half the time and playing the other half of the time. Dont get me wrong, i would love to add Mike Sweeney, but I would think Griffey would happen way before Sweeney was even approached.
  2. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:40 AM) I heard Sweeney cleared waivers...how about him for our DH, and then Everett in the OF until Pods is back...and then we can platoon Sweeney and Everett for the rest of the year. Then next year, Sweeney is the DH or 1b. Thoughts? Do we know he cleared waivers? Again, this is what I heard. With all these damn rumors, I don't know what is true anymore. A pipe dream of the best variety, that is.
  3. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:38 AM) I got this from a Reds board discussion: Lindner won't let KGJ go cheaply. The White Sox weren't offering enough before the deadline. If they give up Young, Rad, Hernandez, & Honel the deal is likely to happen. Would you do a 4-1 for KGJ right now? I would do 4 for 1 if the Reds were willing to pick up 15 million dollars on KGJ contract. If the number is less than that, then I wouldnt give up that many prospects.
  4. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) Mariotti wrote nothing today I take it? He was ripping on Tiger today. He doesnt seem to like Tiger too much nowadays.
  5. this sounds like just about every other trade thread you have made. Dont make a trade, play the kids, repeat.
  6. QUOTE(RDriesen @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 10:04 AM) 2. dont you think the team is worth a lot more with griffey on the team than off it. you have to remember, lindner is all about the bottom line. hes only worried about making money, thats how hes managed the reds. he wants to make as much money as possible off this trade. Really, I dont think Griffey has had the star effect that Cincinatti expected. He hasnt taken them to the playoffs, and has consistently been injured. I think the Reds need to commit to Dunn, Kearns and Pena, and let Griffey walk. And this isnt the White Sox fan in me talking, I have thought this since the beginning of the year(not that I can prove it ) I do, however, think that the prospects they are requesting dont really make sense, or at least they didnt originally. I was thinking that they need pitching bad, but a 1B and OF? Dont really know about that. What does the average Reds fan think about this? Are they for or against it?
  7. QUOTE(daa84 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) on the other end of the dial, mac jurko and harry continue to talk less and less and less about sports and more and more and more about pointless nonsense. thank god they still have the national guys mike and mike and dan patrick to carry them Well, yesterday MJ&H were talking about how J Hood may become part of ESPN 1000 soon. In fact, the impression that they gave me when they were talking about it was that it was a foregone conclusion, just a matter of time. J Hood probably has a 3 month no-compete clause he has to wait out, thats usually the standard. And on a personal note, I think MJ&H have been really good the past 3 months. Mac has been absolutely torturing Jurko and Harry about how bad the Cubs have been.
  8. QUOTE(RDriesen @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) he is an idiot, but as i said on the main board, that isnt the reason he wont trade him. hes selling the team and he wants to A. have the team have as much star power as possible to make more money on the deal and B. allow the new people to decide what to do with the players It amazes me that he isnt thinking of getting rid of an aging player with a huge contract, who really doesnt figure into the teams long term success. I would think that Lindner would be focusing on making sure Dunn stayed around, not Griffey.
  9. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 02:27 AM) I'm equating that none of the stuff said has nothing to do with baseball by both parties. You also said you'll side with Hawk over Mariotti on anything for being there blah blah blah. I wasn't equating abortion with a sport, I was equating a hot topic with another hot topic. Hawk also needs to shut the f*** up because he wasn't even discussed in the article. Where's Hawk ripping Morrisey?? All parties are wrong, but none are more wrong than Hawk. Nite, Hawk and Jay have a had a personal problem with each other for a long time. Jay has had his say about Hawk plenty of times without Hawk saying anything, just because Hawk turned around and took some shots at Jay without being provoked TODAY doesnt mean he wasnt provoked previous to today. I have read some pretty awful things that Jay has said about Hawk, and it would eat me up too. Was it childish? Yes. Was it out of place Yes. Was it funny? Most certainly yes. Was it uncalled for? No. If it was uncalled for, than everything Jay ever has written about was also uncalled for. How are you going to assign blame to Hawk here? These two have been acting like schoolyard king-s***s for years, it isnt going to stop now. Just laugh at them and read Jays articles and notice Hawks response. But abortion? Not even in the same sentence. Bad correlation buddy, it has no place in your argument.
  10. Clarett is a piece of s***. This kid has been living on silver spoons his entire life, and every time something goes bad, he gets pouty and tries to force everyone to give him what he wants. I watched an ESPN special report on Clarett(probably one of the many reasons he is such a spoiled brat) and all he could talk about was how tough it was, but he was gonna make it. Every shot from practice i saw of him, he looked overmatched. I hope Shanahan lets him go with the first team in a pre-season game, I hope Clarett is just annihilated. Shanahan needs to realize that he cant make gold out of EVERY running back.
  11. On Sportsnite tonite the Sox beat reporter said that KW said during his interview that they basically have the trade out there, and they have done as best as they possibly can, and its up to the other side to decide to do it or not. Kenny going through the media?
  12. QUOTE(Soxfest @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 06:45 PM) Mort at 6:22 said even with Brown signing today Benson and Bears are FAR apart on nfl pre game show on ESPN. Eugene Parker aspires to be Drew Rosenhaus I see
  13. QUOTE(SpringfieldFan @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 05:12 PM) From the Red's fansite: No confirmation, or backup resources but a fan over there is saying: Redszone Take it for what its worth. SFF Reading stuff like that puts a smile on my face For a while I was saying to myself it wasnt gonna happen, now I am starting to believe it will. Cubs Levine was saying it wasnt going to happen, now that he thinks it will happen, im starting to think that the baseball people are starting to talk about. If some of those guys are talking about it, something has to be happening a little bit. At least thats how my mind works.
  14. QUOTE(spataro51 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 03:38 PM) AT ONE POINT I WAS THINKING THAT THIS DEAL WAS FOR SURE FOR THE MOST PART GOING TO HAPPEN. BUT I AM NOW SECOND GUESSING MYSELF AND THINKING THAT WE ARE GETTING OUR HOPES UP FOR NOTHING. IN MY OPINION IF THE SOX REALLY WANTED HIM THEY WOULD OF CLAIMED HIM.... I KNOW THAT MEANS THE SOX WOULD OF GOT STUCK WITH THE WHOLE CONTRACT AND ALL THAT STUFF. BUT AS IT LOOKS NOW THEIR IS TO MUCH OBSTACLES IN THE WAY, BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WE SEND TO CINCI ALSO HAS TO CLEAR WAIVERS AND REALLY ANY ONE OF OUR PROSPECTS THAT ARE GOOD WILL BE CLAIMED.......BUT I STILL HAVE HOPE. STOP YELLING AT ME! Seriously though, the Sox are trying to get a trade done without having to claim the entire contract. They are trying to make the trade look better in the long run.
  15. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 02:39 PM) Speaking of cool conspiracies, could Atlantis have been found??? There was a story about this on CNN the other day. there is a guy who thinks, based on landmarks and a aerial map, that he has found the lost city of Atlantis in South America, more specifically off the coast of Brazil. The problem with this theory(as presented by the pessimists in the story) is that the story of Atlantis is said to have originated from the philosopher Plato. Plato's story is more of an eyewitness account, and there is really no way that Plato could have traveled to South America to witness such an event, and it is even more unlikely that he would travel back after witnessing the event and tell the story. The same people also mentioned that they think the idea itself is a hoax. the stories of Homer and the Illiad was very popular during Plato's time, and the thought was that Plato came up with the story of Atlantis to "one-up" other philosophers. The story is fantastic, but there really isnt alot of concrete evidence.
  16. QUOTE(longshot7 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 02:46 PM) Just listened to Gammons on Dan Patrick Show - he said there are some other teams interested, but still unsure if a deal would get done. Said it would greatly help the Sox while Pods is out (so he can heal) but suggested the Sox move Rowand to LF. I'm not sure I get this - Rowand is younger, faster, and a better CFer at this point. Move Griff to LF until Scotty gets back and then platoon him and Carl. Ahhh, The Red Sox arent interested so Gammons doesnt really care.
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 02:18 PM) wow that guy got banned extremely fast, any reasoning? every thread I read from him was confrontational, or at least inviting confrontation. Im not surprised at the quick hook.
  18. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:41 PM) Daver eh what does that mean?
  19. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 01:05 PM) Can we please get back to talking about how Paul Konerko is not a $10 million dollar a year value that statement is fine. I agree with it. But you act like Paul is no big deal. he has been a huge spark for a team desperate for a spark, and noone is noticing because they dont want to see it.
  20. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 01:04 PM) Very well, let me just f***ing edit my statement to reflect the fact that Soxtalk is a website that is big on semantics. How many times has Paul Konerko ever hit a walk-off home run or single? My point is that when the chips are down and we are down 2 in the ninth, 2 out, 2 on and Konerko is up, you can count on a pop-up. Right, every other first baseman in the league besides Paul Konerko is more likely to hit a walk-off other than Konerko. Oh yeah, and a Walk-off homerun is the criteria of a good player. Someone quick, get Lyle Mouton on the phone! He hit a walk-off homerun one time, he must be good!
  21. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 12:58 PM) game winning home run is not the same thing as "insurance run which eventually was the difference" Well you didnt say walk-off homerun did you? you said GAME WINNING HOMERUN OR HIT. I just gave you an example that happened last week, and it doesnt fit the criteria of your argument, so you try and say it doesnt count. deal with it.
  22. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 12:59 PM) I mean, how f***ing ridiculous does that sound. there is only one thing f***ing ridiculous that i see. Go find a mirror Greg, you might see it too.
  23. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 12:57 PM) This is quite a stretch. Boy its amazing how many people cannot admit they are wrong when the facts are put in their faces.
  24. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:36 AM) Konerko is a COMPLETELY one-dimensional player, and next year he will probably be an extremely overpaid one JUST because of home run totals. Any ground ball is an insta-double play. He constantly clogs up the basepaths for the hitters behind him. He's serviceable, but not remarkable defensively. He's streaky to a maddening extent, and much, much worse with runners in scoring position/in clutch situations. Do you ever remember Konerko hitting a game winning homer or hit? I can't in recent memory but it's early monday morning so maybe I'm just wrong. In his early-mid 20s, he was consistently a .290-.300 hitter with 25-30 homers. For the last three seasons, he hasn't cracked .280, and .277 in '04 seems like the top of his threshold since he's turned into a pure slugger. Except for maybe 5-10 extra home runs and maybe 10-15 RBIs AT BEST, what are you getting out of Konerko that you couldn't get out of literally ANY other major league first baseman? I appreciate everything he has done in the past several seasons, but we could get a first baseman that could hit 20-30 home runs and have 80-90 RBIs for much, much less and go out and get even more help with the extra cash. hmmmmm, lets think way way back, to the good ole days of 2005, in fact it was August 10th, 2005. Paul Konerko wound up, in the 9th inning against Alan Embree and sent the pitch an estimated 450 feet into the Yankee monuments. It put the Sox up 2-0, in a game which they won 2-1, making it the game winning homerun. It was such a long time ago, you seem to have forgotten.
