  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 06:24 PM) It's not just age....there's the fact that the Sox have no hitters on the team who you expect to be with them in the next 5 years or so. The Tigers have Granderson at least. The Tigers do have an old offense....it's too bad they fleeced NY with the Sheffield trade. 3 infield pop ups so far. Well, I see what you mean and I agree with you. I just thought you were pointing to our age as a negative against us for this season. But I think 5 years is a pretty long time period. I don't know that the Yankees or Red Sox have those players either. If the Sox can support a $90-100 M payroll it's not something to worry about. Pitching is another issue, though. Edit: Forgot about Cano.
  2. fathom, I'm looking at the Tigers lineup and they're older than we are. Not that I think it matters much, but I've gathered you think age is an issue for the Sox.
  3. I really don't see why this team won't win the division. Our pitching is terrfic and while I expect Vazquez and Danks to give up more runs later in the year, I also see our hitting doing better to make up for the difference. I like our pitching matchups this weekend.
  4. God, I just want to assume the fetal position right now.
  5. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 17, 2007 -> 08:44 PM) Nah, pretty much the same. A lot of guys at the age where they should see their bat speed start to diminish. Who, outside of Thome, is old in our lineup?
  6. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 17, 2007 -> 08:41 PM) Our offense has to be one of the oldest in all of baseball. "Oldest" and "old" are different.
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 17, 2007 -> 08:36 PM) Haha, this is absolutely comical. Nothing like seeing hitters get old in front of your very eyes. This team is not old by baseball standards. Just clueless right now.
  8. Greg Walker should not have a job. Everytime this team struggles to score runs they're swinging (and missing) for the fences. Now, how does pretty much every single guy up and down the line-up get that idea? Who's the one "instructing" them?
  9. "We've had some games where, considering the weather, we're taking our walks and doing things right," hitting coach Greg Walker said.
  10. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Apr 15, 2007 -> 03:09 PM) Aaron Rowand? I wouldn't mind that at all. I was looking at Jay Payton, too. Maybe Brady Clark, although he was just traded to the Dodgers.
  11. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 15, 2007 -> 02:53 PM) Then when we fire Greg Walker we can go through the same crap with another hitting coach. I don't know what you're trying to say here. Our team hitting approach under Walker has been terrible for the most part throughout his entire tenure. In the short term, firing hitting coaches has always given the Sox a boost (going from Joshua to Ward, and from Ward to Walker). If Von Joshua could get fired not even a full season after the Sox led the league in hitting, why should Greg Walker be immune? I agree with you that we're in a better position than we were last season because our pitching looks much better.
  12. Greg Walker = fired (hopefully) Was Eduardo Perez signed by anybody? If not, we should sign him up, trade Mack for a right-handed hitting OF who can play center, and send Anderson down so he's not rotting on the bench.
  13. My question is, what does Greg Walker have to do to get fired? I was flamed last season for suggesting Dye, Crede, Thome, and even Konerko wouldn't match their 2006 output in 2007. It's still early so I could very well be wrong, but I don't think so.
  14. QUOTE(mrzo2733 @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 10:59 PM) Definitely agree. What I don't understand though is what he could get charged for. When you hear that he got his family here doesn't that mean he paid someone to get them here? Of course he did. I just don't understand what law he broke...except for Cuban laws. Yeah, calling it a "smuggling operation" seems a little strange. One can smuggle guns or drugs but it doesn't fit with Cuban refugees. I'd like to hear more details.
  15. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 09:27 AM) No doubt. I know it's early but I really like what I'm seeing from this pitching staff. Just need to have some of the starters go a bit deeper into the game to keep that bullpen fresh. That is deffinately true. As of right now, Ozzie's go-to guys in the bullpen are Mac, Thornton, and Jenks. What I am hoping for is that Aardasma, Sisco, and Masset continue to pitch well and gain Ozzie's trust so he can put them in some of those late game situations. They certainly have the stuff to do this. Spreading the workload could be one way to keep the bullpen fresh.
  16. We've gotten 3 really good pitching performances in a row (4 if you count Masset's relief job) and that's probably the only sure-fire sign of season long success in baseball. So at this point, yeah, we're looking like a damn good team.
  17. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 04:34 PM) There's a reasonable chance he could start at some point, in fact he's talking about it on the postgame show. Right now the line for the rotation seems pretty full...but you never really know. He may well have the stuff to do it. I didn't mean for this year, as I agree our rotation would have to completely fall apart for him to make it. But in the future, he looked the part of a good starting pitcher today. So was just wondering if that's something he can build on, or whether that was just kind of a flukey thing? It'd be nice to have some nice starting options for 2008 and beyond with Contreras' age and Buehrle's contract uncertainty.
  18. Great game by Masset. Is there any chance he could eventually be a starter or is he only projected to be a bullpen arm? That was impressive today.
  19. Regardless of what happens the rest of this game, I'll be quite happy about Garland finishing this game strongly.
  20. Why is Pods on this team, seriously? Man, I can't believe I'd be longing for Eduardo Perez but that would be such better use of a roster spot.
  21. I might be overly optimistic here, or overly traumatized by yesterday's game, but I think Garland settled down and pitched well.
  22. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 02:23 PM) If we're really, really close in the race, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibilities...but I agree with Fathom that Haeger and Floyd, and maybe Broadway within a couple months, are much more likely and probably better options. But, the way I think about it...if we're in need of another starting pitcher of the quality that will be available on the trading market...we will not be in this race. It seems you guys are probably right. I don't think an average pitcher (i.e. the type of pitcher available at the trading deadline) would help this pitching staff, because, at worst, we'll have 5 average pitchers on this staff by that point. I still think this team has a tremendous need for a #1 starting pitcher, though, so I was mostly asking if such a pitcher would become available at some point. Obviously, a guy like that would have to be a free agent in the off-season and Zambrano (unless he re-signs) is the only guy I can think of that would fit that criteria.
