  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 03:26 PM) So you're suggesting we stand pat then.....which is actually what I think will happen. It's sad though, because after watching us play the AL East powers, I think we're an inferior team. At this point, I don't think there's any doubt the Yanks/Red Sox are better. The Tigers probably are, too. I've been saying the same thing you are, though, if we can't acquire an impact starter, we better improve the lineup and try to win slugfests. At the very least, dump one of the starters and open up a spot for McCarthy.
  2. So do we have any more info on Fields getting pulled from the game?
  3. There's been way too much "everything is fine" talk around here. Maybe people will realize us pessimists had a point. KW can't stand pat if he's interested in competing for a championship. It sure looks like we're weaker than the Red Sox, Yankees, and Tigers.
  4. Is anyone still doing the "take out team so and so and his numbers look real good" stat track for Freddy? By the way, this Yankees lineup is weaker than a bunch of NL teams.
  5. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:34 PM) Detroit's pitching has looked quite mediocre vs the Royals. That really is the only good sign of the weekend. Verlander still looks strong though and Bonderman will be real good for the 2nd half. Maybe Robertson, Miner, and Rogers can come back down to earth.
  6. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:29 PM) SHUT UP! /look at record /look at record against Detroit /look at career averages of starters /three words: vaunted pitching staff Even though we all agreed pitching/defense wins championships, watch a large percentage of posters suddenly change their philosophy to include offense. It just what happens when people can't criticize what's in front of them. Very good observation. There's a lot of that going on here for sure.
  7. We should bump some threads from a couple of weeks ago when people argued we didn't need pitching help because the offense would carry us. We'll see what happens when our 3-4-5 guys go on a slump.
  8. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:17 PM) I've seen this before: first two guys get on base, while the middle of the order f***s around. ...
  9. I've seen this before: first two guys get on base, while the middle of the order f***s around.
  10. Pods has been on-base 4 times today and is hitting .373 in July. What a terrible lead-off hitter.
  11. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) I dunno, I just expect him to pitch in a close game when we need innings. 6-3 qualifies as close, sadly. So because he's not in, are you taking that to mean he's being shopped/getting ready to go into the rotation?
  12. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:04 PM) Hmm....still interesting that Mac isn't warming. Why is it interesting?
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:02 PM) Thankfully, Garcia is still in the game. He's keeping us in the game.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:52 PM) At least those team had some great defense. And probably didn't need a bunch of guys to have career years for their offense to be good. I think this offense is living on borrowed time.
  15. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:36 PM) Would anyone deal Fields to San Diego for Linebrink? It would bring the Sox a great righty setup man, get McCarthy into the rotation and would allow for the team to deal Garcia. It could be just the shakeup this team needs. Well, I would be hopeful, if we are trading Garcia, that we can get a decent bullpen arm using him as the trading chip.
  16. Garcia's ERA now at 5.20. I would like to meet this mythical GM that is willing to pay up a king's ransom for Garcia. I have a hard time imagining Gillick being so stupid as to give up his All-Star closer. No way is that going to happen.
  17. It's gotten to the point where it's difficult to defend the rationale of not making a move to improve this team. We're clearly inferior to the Red Sox and Yankees.
  18. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:00 PM) not true. possibility, not gauranteed They're not re-signing him at the end of the season. No way.
  19. QUOTE(soxunited @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:57 PM) I would be very, very surprised to see Oakland tinker with its rotation right now, especially Zito. I don't see him going anywhere until after the season is done, if he does go He's a free agent, so he's going somewhere.
  20. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:45 PM) What about people willing to trade for Schmidt last year when he was pitching mediocre because people expected to pick him up and turn things around. Than Schmidt went on a bit of a run and obviously he was never sent. And I can't believe your actually comparing Hendrickson to Garcia and saying Hendrickson should get more trade value. We are talking about a guy who couldn't hold Garcia's jock strap. Over their careers yes, but not this season.
  21. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) If I'm the Cards, I'd give up whatever it took for Freddy. If I'm the Mets I'd trade Pelfrey for Freddy. The guy hasn't been near as bad as a lot of you think he has this year. Not saying he's been good either, but he's had runs where he's been just fine and he's still throwing innings. Sure there is a concern he's not throwing hard but I think physically he's fine. Look at it this way, The Cards got s*** in the rotation, the Mets got 2 guys in there rotation and they both need help if they want to even think about a World Series win against any of these AL teams. I'm asking if you were GM of the White Sox and our 5th starter slot was filled by Felix Diaz or whoever, would you give up someone like Josh Fields for Garcia? I sure wouldn't. As far as the Cards and Mets, their rotation would still be s*** with Freddy.
  22. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:40 PM) I don't care that they are seeing him pitch, they know the guy has done it and as recently as last year. Plus he's had streaks this year where he was doing it. Teams in the race would f***ing love to pick up a guy like Garcia and see what they could do and they'd give up a fortune. For crap sakes the Drays get an upper echelon catching prospect for Mark Hendrickson and the Angels got a solid outfield prospect with some pop for Jeff Weaver. You guys are kidding yourselves if you don't think we could swing him to a team like the Mets for a top notch pitching prospect and maybe a guy like Heilman. Yeah, Mark Hendrickson has been pitching better than Freddy at the time he was dealt. If there are GMs who will trade for Freddy based on reputation, then they should be fired. That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while. Freddy clearly isn't the same pitcher he was in the past. If I can see that, so can opposing scouts and GMs.
  23. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) You can't deny that teams would give up upper echelon prospects for him though, teams like the Mets, Yankees, or Cardinals. Would you give up upper echelon prospect for Freddy? We're just as desperate for dependable starters as those teams.
  24. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 12:34 PM) Its not. We aren't about to trade freddy for a damn near 40 year old reliever, not unless the team is also getting something for the future. I don't care how bad Freddy has been, a guy with his repetoire, his proven track-record of success, and his ability to pitch in the post-season, will allow the Sox to get a MAJOR package as if he were available he'd be one of the premiere pitchers on the market. Do you think other GMs aren't seeing him pitch? Gordon will help us more now than Freddy. If that's on the table, get it done and don't look a gift horse in the mouth. I don't understand your thinking at all.
