QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:48 PM) Racist "sounding". Interpretation is individual. I didn't really have a problem with it. Is there any other plausible explanation why Timo is still on the roster (where we clearly don't have a need for another OF) and Gload is in the minors (where we clearly have a need for a backup --or maybe even a starting-- 1st baseman)?

QUOTE(Cubs Suck23 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:46 PM) Ozzie pretty much didnt want Carlos Lee or Ordonez back and last time I checked they were both latin as well I'm sure if Carlos Lee and Maggs could play for $1M each they'd still be on the team.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:40 PM) Clement hasn't been that effective lately. He may be entering his fade a little earlier this season. They go against Clement, Wakefield, Miller and Arroyo. They can win 3 of these games. Clement, Wakefield, Miller and Arroyo will all look much better though when facing the White Sox lineup as opposed to that of the Yankees, Orioles, or Blue Jays.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:39 PM) Hawk just said buehrle, garland, contreras, and garcia. Hawk had to have made a mistake. No way Garcia is going on 3 days rest after throwing 112 pitches.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:31 PM) You know, if Frank started talking like he invented the game of baseball, and he started building benches out of baseball bats and bases, you wouldn't be able to tell him apart from Ron Kittle.

Guys, I think we're coming back to win this one. Garland and Buehrle are going to have to pitch the games of their lives for this week not to turn into another embarassment. And we have such great crowds, too.

QUOTE(Allsox @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:13 PM) With the negative views today on a team that may possibly lose just their 31st game at the end of July, makes me wonder if Cardinal fans think their team sucks too since they lost to lowly Milwaukee last night :banghead I think our bullpen and top 3 starters are awesome. I also love what Pods and Iguchi have done for us this season. But why is it such a crime to want upgrades in some other areas.

QUOTE(T R U @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 04:10 PM) Widger with a bomb.. only need one to tie now... still impossible? Yes.
-
Widger makes up for costing us a run earlier. Good job, I guess.
-
Holy f*** are these at bats pathetic.
-
QUOTE(T R U @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 03:54 PM) so with 4 innings left to play you dont think we can score 3 runs?.. Thats not a very good way to look at situations like this, especially when its been done numerous times this year I never expect our pathetic offense to score 3 or more runs in a game. When it actually happens, I'm pleasantly surprised.
-
QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) I do not believe the game is over. Correct me if i am wrong. We're going to have to score 3 runs to win this game. That ain't happening.
-
Thanks for s***ting your pants in front of another big crowd, guys. Losing 5 out of 6 at home is awful.
-
Right now I'm pretty happy about 1 since I thought we wouldn't be getting any at this point. For a small ball team, we've got some horrible bunters in Rowand, Widger, and Willie.
-
Uribe is .338 AVG/ .948 OPS vs. lefties.
-
Should Widge bunt? I think he's pretty bad at it...

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 03:20 PM) Yeah I went back and did some research. I don't know where you got your chart from, but I think this is the right one.
-
I would certainly consider Griffey and/or Dunn. We're getting sub-par production from several positions (3B, SS, CF, LF -- and I love Scotty, just saying that corner OF spots are usually reserved for power hitters). And outside of Big Frank at DH, there's really no one in the lineup who's having an above average season for his position. That and we suck against RHP. At the right price, Griffey would be a good addition.

GAME THREAD 7-19-05 SOX vs Tigers

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:15 PM) Burnett's Road ERA in a pitcher's league = 3.80 Contreras' Road ERA in a hitter's league = 3.50 Burnett pitches in a pitcher's park. Jose pitches in a hitter's park. You have to look at more than that. Contreras has the benefit of facing weak-ass AL Central hitting. And while Washington is pretty weak offensively, the Braves and Phillies have scored more runs than any team in the AL Central. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:15 PM) We have too many righty hitters in our lineup. We've really struggled hitting righties with decent stuff lately. Between Millwood, Douglass, and Bonderman, we've struggled against righties lately with sharp stuff. We don't adjust well to sliders moving away from us, which is why we fared better against Westbrook and his sinker. Yeah, that's why I laugh at the suggestions that our lineup is fine. We go up against a decent right-hander and our lineup struggles. Trying to trade for a bullpen arm should be way down the priority list, and I don't buy that we're fine just standing pat. -

So are people ready to rethink the Contreras > Burnett statements made in the past week? -
I really don't think any of the Dodger pitchers are better than El Duque or Contreras. Derek Lowe isn't good and he has a horrible contract because of two good weeks in the post-season.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 10:46 PM) It all depends, if you use 4 starters, than you better have a stronger bullpen. However, you go 3 starters than you take the risk of burning your rotation, but you probably can use less relievers cause you may get better starts (cause your using your aces more). Of course that could totally backfire. Personally, for the most part I'd plan on using 4 starters, unless the rest matched up. I'm not a big fan of guys going on less rest cause more times than not, they aren't as effective. I'm not advocating using only 3 starters. I just meant that with already having Garland/Garcia/Buehrle and the TBD fourth starter, whether one of the Cubans, or Burnett, or Schmidt (but since this is still up in the air somewhat, I just failed to list him), I think we will have starting pitchers that can pitch enough innings to the point where having 5 dominant bullpen relievers is useless. Sorry for not making that clear there.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 10:18 PM) Since we can't match the offense that Boston had the last season -- And probably don't have the dominant arms in the rotation that Florida had two years ago -- Our best chance at this may be to emulate the 2002 Angels. -- Decent starting staff, lights out pen, good offense. But the Angels did have a great offense, and in fact they averaged 6.3 runs/game which is only slightly below the 6.4 runs/gm put up by Boston last year. I actually think we're closer to the Marlins, as we'll have to rely on dominant starting pitching and just enough timely hitting to win us games. All I'm saying is we'll benefit more by finding another good starter than having 5 closers with Buehrle/Garland/Garcia already on the staff. How many relievers did the Marlins use besides Looper (who wasn't very good), Urbina, and Chad Fox? And who thinks Ozzie won't let the starters go deep into games?

QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 10:04 PM) Boston played 3 extra inning games in the playoffs last yr, they also had Arroyo knocked out in the 3rd inning of a game too. They used everyone including Pedro as a reliever. Btw, their pen sans Foulke was horrid in the playoffs and that should've cost them(and almost did) but they had an O that could score against anyone. Since we don't have their O I sure as hell wouldn't want to emulate their pen. Well, our pen is already stronger than theirs. But the Red Sox were able to win last year because of the strength of their starting pitching (Schilling/Pedro/Lowe). So it goes to reason that we should focus more on starting pitching than on the bullpen.
