QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:30 PM)This is one of the funnier argument-resolutions I've seen lately. IMO, you're both wrong.
It's also amusing to see people begging and pleading to not turn a thread into pages of useless debate and argument. That's the whole freakin point of message boards.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:26 PM)At least you know when to abandon a moot point. Victory!
Please, everyone knows that internet debate is about how many laughs your witty posts get. you = teh lose

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:23 PM)Note to self: When losing an argument go as far off topic as possible. Ok i got it.
Note to self: pat self on back to ensure intellectual superiority when the ad hominems come back at you.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:21 PM)Lets compare their 2nd halves then.
Contreras 2.96
Prior 1.52
omgcherrypicker!1
Seriously Rock, learn how to read. :headshake

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:17 PM)Seriously, you need to learn to read, before you jumped in this argument with no knowledge, it was brought up by someone other than me that Count was better this year than prior in 2003. That was the comparison, not the players now, but these two years in comparison.
No knowledge? Learn how to read? You sure are one seriously condescending SOB. You're the genius who is acting like it's ridiculous to compare to the two.
Maybe I should CAPITALIZE some RANDOM words in my sentences like you do so I LOOK more RIGHT.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:16 PM)Nobody is cherry picking years, not even me. The comparison was brought up that Contreras in 2005 was better than Prior is his best year (2003). This is why im telling you to read posts before you argue. So therefore the comparison of stats would be Prior 2003 vs Count 2005. Not exactly cherry picking. So if k's and wins mean nothing to you, how about ERA?? Or WHIP.
Yeah, ERA is a good one. How different is Contreras' 2.96 in the second half from Prior's 2.43 in 2003? What's the average run differential between the AL and NL?
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:13 PM)Yes, unfortunatley the debate was him in 2003. Be gone.
Well lets debate the third week in August 2002. :headshake
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:10 PM)That's some interesting cherry-picking of statistics. Contreras allowed more walks in 05 than Prior did in 03. Should I care? Beats the hell out of me.
What, you guys are cherry picking years, I cant cherry pick stats?
The walks bother me, but strikeouts I could care less about because I dont play fantasy baseball and wins have as much to do with run support and defense as pitching.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:11 PM)So, thats all you got? More hits? Come on, compare full seasons, no comparison. Compare 2nd halves Prior was 10-1 with a 1.52 walking ONLY 16 whilst K-ing 95
Compare full seasons? Prior isnt going to do much from the DL. You have to compare the body of work, and injuries are part of that for Prior.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:07 PM)How is that my opinion. I posted statistics that were ALL in favor of Mark Prior. In 2003, he was better than Contreras was this year, even if you isolate only the 2nd half, Prior still has better numbers.
Since he pitches in the NL Mark Prior gets a free inning a game and still allowed more hits in '03 than Contreras did in '05 (entire season).
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:04 PM)Yes, no s*** he is good. Read the post before you respond. His claim was that the count was better last year than Prior in 2003. Which is NOT true.
What the hell do you think I was replying to?
And that's JUST your opinion.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 02:00 PM)wow, are you serious?
Prior in 2003 was 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA and 245 k's 50 bb's
this was the counts best year and he was 15-7 3.61 154 k's 75 bb's post all star he had a 2.96 ERA. Not even as good as Priors whole season.
Seriously, you need to research your claims before you type them.
11-2 2.96 in the second half (AL, not NL) and 3-1 3.09 in the playoffs is hardly chopped liver. Prior allowed more hits in '03 than Contreras allowed last year as well.

QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 11:06 AM)Irony.
Not when he put it in green it's not.
-
QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 04:11 PM)Miguel Cabrera is a great player and texeira is a above great hitter and a gold glove winner i believe.
They definitely put up numbers and they're great players, but I guess I dont think of them as the super elite type players. I'd put Jeter, Ichiro, Clemens, Oswalt, Mariano Rivera and Derrick Lee ahead of those guys.
Just my two cents though.
-
QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 03:53 PM)I'd say more of a top 7
pujlos
cabrera
a-rod
santana
vlad
texeira
tejada
I cant believe that you guys like Carbrera and Texeira that much.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 03:39 PM)http://www.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28747
The Orioles Board has a big thread going off this same rumor. They think both offers are crap. Interesting to read Baltimore's opinion. They all say Tejada is a top 5 player in baseball, which I completely disagree with. I can name 10 players I would rather have.
Johan Santana
Albert Pujols
A-Rod
Vlad
Ortiz
Derek Lee
Andruw Jones
Miguel Cabrera
D-Train
Texeira
Obviously it's all opinion anyway, but I wouldnt put Ortiz (no D), Andruw, Cabrera, or Texeira on that list ahead of Tejada.

QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 01:32 PM)They gained a legit leadoff hitter to get on for Mauer and Morneau and middle infielder in Juan Castillo, replaced Jaque Jones with Rondell White (who is arguably better), they will have Francisco Liriano and Scott Baker for an entire season (who are better than Lohse and whoever else they had starting), and they signed Tony Bastilla, who only gets paid if he makes the opening day roster, so its a pretty good signing.
I guess it was the "improved dramatically" part of your post that I didnt understand. They may have made some nice under the radar moves, but there's nothing dramatic about their improvement.
-
QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 01:08 PM)So are you saying that Minnesota hasn't done anything, although they have improved dramatically over last years team?
They have? Rondell White and Luis Castillo?
-
QUOTE(qwerty @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 12:47 PM)The sox making the playoffs easily? LOLOLOL.
It seems to me that we've gotten a lot better and our competition has either stayed put or fallen back. The division is ours for the taking, IMO.
-
QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 12:02 PM)Personally, I'd take someone who is consistantly good over someone that is only good one half of the year anyday of the week.
Buehrle didnt really have a stellar second half last year. He was the odds on favorite for the Cy Young at the break.
-
QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:58 AM)Ever heard of a guy named Mark Buehrle? He's prettty good.
No one's a bigger Buehrle fan than me. But he wasnt nearly the pitcher Contreras was in the second half last year, not to mention the playoffs.
-
QUOTE(Damen @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:54 AM)So you believe that a team with this rotation
Buerhle
Garland
Garcia
Vazquez
McCarthy
and a lineup with Tejada/Konerko/Thome at the heart is worse off?
Well, we wouldnt have a clear cut #1 pitcher anymore.
But I wasnt saying that the lineup wouldnt be better, because it probably would be. I was just replying to you calling Contreras replaceable, which isnt really true. We wouldnt be able to fill his spot in the rotation with someone of a similar caliber.
-
QUOTE(Damen @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 11:49 AM)Why would you not want Tejada on the Sox, in exchange for an inferior SS and a replaceable pitcher?
Contreras was the best pitcher in baseball in the second half and in the playoffs last year. Replacing that isnt that easy.
