QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) That one chick in the movie is hot. The one who was a teenager in Uncle Buck and then grew up to be a total babe. John Candy?

QUOTE (Cali @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 02:32 PM) For those looking for a positive spin, just look up the synopsis for the movie Mr. Holland's Opus. And every time Mr. Holland comes up replace it with Robin. Cause you see, Mr. Holland never wanted to teach, but in the end he loved his job....and the kids, they wound up teaching HIM. So it might all work out with Robin...

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 02:40 PM) There was a ton going on, I thought it was pretty funny though. I definitely laughed a few times. Just seemed a bit sloppy.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 11:27 PM) The shiva shuffle was fantastic. I have to say I was disappointed with the episode. Seemed all over the place with a terrible pace. They seemed to want to cram as much stuff into 30 minutes as possible.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:18 PM) That's why I am trying to figure out. People asked about Robin's role in the locker room, they got an anecdote from his playing days. What is the big problem here? I listed a bunch of things a manager would be expected to do. Then I read that he got in Frank's face once. Now I'm supposed to believe that he has expertise in those areas I listed? That's a stretch.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:15 PM) Crap you caught me. RockRaines and I got together, despite us never meeting, to plan on making up the exact same story. What story? All I've heard is that he got in Frank's face once. What am I missing here?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:12 PM) The Frank instance wasn't the only one. Well that's conveniently vague.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:09 PM) If the stories are true, he was involved in the background for a lot of those types of things as a player. Obviously he hasn't done it publicly, but there are stories out there about Robin getting into Frank's face during some of his sulking fits, and the like. What do you mean by the bolded?

QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 12:00 PM) This is good for a number of reasons: Professionalism had to be restored to the clubhouse and manager position. Practically everyone associated with the team was sick and tired of Ozzie, his antics and his family. The players stopped listening to him about 2 years ago. Robin Ventura immediately changes that. As a long time Sox player, very successful ballplayer with experience on both NY franchises as well as LA Dodgers and last year's involvement with Sox minor leagues he's a perfect fit. He also has the right personality. People in the game know that his temperament is right for the job. Also, he loves the Sox and will continue to bring in former Sox. He knows how to win and brings playoff experience. Far better player than Ozzie with even more experience and more respect in the game. Finished 6th in MVP voting in 1999 and played as recently as 2004 will connect well with players. He clearly needs to grow into the position but there is something to be said for the young players feeling that they and the team are all growing together. Isn't this what us fans have been wanting? Some Sox pride and a Sox system? Ozzie was a part of this but Ozzie is in it too much for Ozzie. Ventura is not like that. I am quite pleased that I am not being insulted by the organization this year with the typical " we are going for it all this year even though we are a very flawed team" type of slogan. I only hope that this is a true rebuilding process throughout the organization and not just a quick speed bump before KW is back to acquiring expensive veterans that have peaked at the expense of young talent while he tries to half-ass a contender every year. Good luck Robin and Go Sox! Also, I know it hasn't been announced yet but I am pretty sure that Frank Thomas will be the new hitting coach. Okay, so he's my all-time favorite player and that excites me. Maybe, Adam Dunn would actually be willing to learn something from Frank. Why is the bolded a good thing? We've won one WS in almost a 100 years. Perhaps bringing in people from successful organizations is a better path to take.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:45 AM) But still, by his own admission, he had no real serious thoughts or plans to manage until the Sox offered him the job. That's simply not an effective way to run a business to my eyes. You're telling me it's a bad idea to avoid picking someone who's been actively involved with a baseball organization from a day-to-day standpoint by managing/coaching and instead going with a guy that has done virtually nothing in the game since he played many years ago?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:51 AM) Westboro Baptist Church announces they will protest Jobs's funeral. Sent announcement out using Twitter for iPhone. Oh jeez. When will that clan get full blown AIDS and go away?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:49 AM) Yes, he probably chewed out a players while in a clubhouse in his career a few times, in fact one instance he did it to Big Frank. All of those situations you listed he has been through at the major league level. I give up.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:44 AM) I believe that Pete Rose had a pretty good damn record as Mgr... Then I guess it's settled. Close this thread. We're going to kick ass for the foreseeable future!

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:44 AM) Good points sqwert, but at the same time, Ozzie failed miserably in these particular situations. So the solution to addressing a manager that was awful at those things is to bring in someone who has never experienced any of it? Mind-boggling really.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) I want to know that how, in your opinion, does Ventura not know how to handle a big league club after playing 2,000 games in a big league clubhouse? During those 2000 games was he ever asked to discipline a trouble maker? Was he asked to yank a player for dogging it? Has he ever pulled a pitcher that wanted to stay in the game? Has he ever dealt with an under-performing starter with an up and coming bench player in their shadow?
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 10:58 AM) It's unfortunate the other half is still here making "bold" decisions hiring gutty guys like Ventura with no experience nor idea how to handle a Major League ballclub. I blame it on JR and his ridiculous level of loyalty.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 10:32 AM) This is not true, and I'm tired of people saying it. Girardi was a bench coach, and the vast majority of managers in at least the last 30 years gained experience as coaches or minor league managers before becoming big league managers. You have to start going 50 years back to get a good amount of managers who had no experience whatsoever. No. Reddy is correct. There have been billions of guys hired in the past with zero experience.

Did Ozzie forward his signing bonus to Cowley to get him to take this organization into the gutter?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 08:59 PM) ...none of us know how skilled or unskilled Robin is. Including the Sox organization. Can anyone really say how he will work with players? He's never been in any type of role to teach, mentor, coach or anything. Seems like a huge gamble to let him start now. What if he has huge issues communicating to players or getting them to follow his lead.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:51 PM) I love how people are stretching this much. Since neither has managed a professional team, they're equally as experience. Never mind the fact that one has been the right-hand man for a manager for years. It's like having two guys work in the mail room of a company for about 15 years. One somehow retires while the other works his way up to vice president of the company. When there is an opening for president, the mail room guy is hired because they both have the same amount of experience at running a company. And to say that the more important hiring is that of the hitting and bench coaches doesn't even make sense. The most important hiring is the manager, plain and simple.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:46 PM) What's funny is he's crying Ventura isn't qualified, but since he's never worked in a front office and has zero experience, I don't know how he's qualified to say that. No I'm not crying just voicing my displeasure. And I can point you to an article earlier in this thread that ripped apart this godawful move.
