Torii Hunter signs with LAA Angels
Steve9347 replied to joejoesox's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 09:03 AM) I guess I was wrong. Big deal. I'm just f***ing with you brosef, take it easy. -
F*** Freel... give me Josh Hamilton! This year was a re-adjustment period, and you can expect to get abou t140 games out of him and for him to be world improved over last year. Man, I would love for the Sox to throw it all at the Reds to get Hamilton (seriously, couldn't he be had for a Joe Crede or maybe even a Lance Broadway sell high?)... he can play all three OF positions and well, has 5 tools, and I think 2008 will be sick for him.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 08:51 AM) Who the hell cares what Rowand thinks. If he is that brittle emotionaly then I wouldn't want him here for 1 dollar. What happened to Hunter being a Sox a done deal? -
Torii Hunter signs with LAA Angels

I love this. I wasn't ecstatic about signing hunter anyway, now in the next 4 years the Angels have 26.5 mill tied up in centerfielders per season... doubt it effects them though. Would any team bail them out by taking the 33 year old, steroid abusing Gary Matthews, Jr? I sure hope not. It's so odd how they have such a bottomless pocketbook, so they take on Garland AND sign Hunter. I would love for the White Sox to throw it all at Andruw Jones, who I think is worlds better than Hunter and just had one bad season, but I sure don't want to invest the money it would require to get Aaron Rowand back in here... he's still Rowand, and expecting anything more than a .275/15/75 would be ridiculous. -
But he had one good game at the beginning of the season so he's awesome now! Note the strong sarcasm.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 11:24 AM) Seriously then. What reason do I have to trade him if that's not the level of player I'm getting? Melky Cabrera for Bobby Jenks? Are you kidding? I didn't suggest that. But suggesting that the only possibility a deal with the Yanks should get done would be if we got Phil Hughes back is utterly retarded.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 11:12 AM) If they want Jenks, then Philip Hughes is involved (assuming that Joba is actually untouchable). We have no good reason to trade him unless that is the level of haul coming back to us. This is hilarious.

Bobby Jenks is not worth Robinson Cano straight up. End of story. My God, Cano is a 24 year old 2B with a career .314/.346 with decent power and had his best walk totals ever last year... his discipline is sure to continue to grow. For a reliever who throws 100 innings? haha, no chance in hell dude.

John McDonough in as Blackhawks President

Great article by Rozner today... -
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 05:23 AM) id want melky, cano, and a prospect... they can have uribe too ;p Yeah, I'm sure they'd be itching to deal a young stud 2B for a relief pitcher. My God, Bobby is so overrated around here... people want multiple players for him! I'd love to sell high on him, but that'll never happen.

Yeah, they always start slow, blah blah blah. This team is in BIG trouble simply because the East is twice as good as it was last year, thrice as good as the year before, and Lord knows how much better than before that... This team got passed by by a lot of improving teams in the East. I can't believe some publications picked them over the Celtics, Magic, Pistons...

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 08:02 PM) If his problem were just with Mr. Wirtz then maybe he can return, or if it were just with Peter and Mr. Wirtz, it is possible. My understanding, though, was some sweeping statements about the Wirtz family were made by Foley so there may be some bad blood. I wonder if he was there at the funeral. His attendance or non attendance would speak volumes. Also for what it's worth, his relationship with Tallon is said to be strained. Not sure what say Tallon would have in any reconciliation but it's worth noting. One thing the fans are finding out though, if Rocky Wirtz thinks something is appropriate to get done, it gets done. I suspect any discussion of Foley would fall under that umbrella. For the record, the Blackhawk web guy says publically that Foley isn't coming back and has said that for a while now. Of course, he now has a new boss in McDonough. I will speculate that this type of bulls*** will be gone. Whereas in the past players like Roenick, Amonte, Sullivan (all disliked by management) and guys like Foley won't be ostracized from the franchise because of petty dislikes for outspoken players/personnel. Just a hunch, but I think that petty s*** died with Mr. Wirtz and with the banishment of Pully. -

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 07:51 PM) Where is this being speculated? Hopefully not on the Blackhawk message boards ... still? Mac and Jurko interviewed McDonough yesterday and it was the first question they asked and he stated that they were opening all doors trying to make the Blackhawks the Blackhawks again. Then it was brought up on Boers and Bernstein, Comcast SportsNite, etc etc... it's just sooo McDonough + Harry Carray. It will happen. -
QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 01:19 AM) Decent. I enjoyed the period scenes. Ew, Jeremy. You must love "Carrie."

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 07:39 PM) Dammit. I kinda like getting easy cheap tickets at the games. This is like pre 2005 whitesox stuff, where only the loyal fans are there before the marketing goes off the hook. Actually, I would think that you'll see ticket prices for the 300 level drop across the board. Speculation has it that the $45 300-level ticket will be abolished and you'll see the highest price seat in that level down to about $30-35. I will have no problem having to "fight" for a ticket as long as its a good product on the ice! -
Not much of a concern here... he'll be figured out by August of 08 and worthless by September of 08! ha.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 07:22 PM) I'd be fine with Pat on TV, but I've really come to enjoy John Wiedeman on the radio. I don't want him to go anywhere. Oh definitely, I'd rather they simulcast Wiedeman than let him go on the radio... he's a more descriptive Foley in himself... leave the radio broadcast alone, he and Murray are doing a fine job there. Dan Kelly, he needs to go, and Pat needs to come back. -
PODS DFA'D; Egbert, Harrell, Russell and Armstrong on 40 man

Well, now we know that they'll definitely be going after a new leadoff hitter. No one in the organization fits that bill right now. -

Steve9347 replied to Steve9347's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Everyone is speculating that McDonough's first move will be to get Foley back for the Blackhawks. There are not enough words in the English language that would express how happy that would make me. -
Thanks for the recap.

QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 11:39 AM) Why do I feel that half the team will be on the DL during the season. What? You think depending on 6 starters in your lineup who are 32+ would lend to an injury down the road? For shame!

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 09:39 AM) Press conference at noon today. I will watch. McDonough knows how to hire good people but this ain't the baseball business. What does he know about hockey? I guess we'll find out. He has all the right Chicago connections and can help raise the franchises profile but the obvious question is, what's the level of his interaction with the hockey people? Will he be telling Dale Tallon/Rick Dudley/Stan Bowman what to do ... interesting ... we'll see how it shakes out. He doesn't really need to know hockey to be a good President. He will hire people he trusts to give him the correct information, and I'm sure will keep DT around, I doubt he'll have much input over the on-ice product other than trusting those he puts into place. We're going to see a much bigger focus on marketing, and as you said he'll be most helpful in the Chicago aspect of the Chicago Blackhawks... Jim DeMaria and Tony Ommen can focus on the hockey aspect (and I'm sure those who he brings in)... Where this franchise is today... such a stark contrast from two seasons ago. -
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 08:38 AM) If by some time you mean by next Monday you would be correct. They will announce the Torii Hunter signing Monday or sooner. Book it. This sounds a lot like the Kobe deal.

The more I let this one sink in the more I like it. League perception is that Jon is a mediocre pitcher, statistics aside from 2005 suggest that is correct, and we just got a gold glove short stop who's OBP will be .100 higher than Uribe's, and he can steal some bags. Sure, I'd prefer he were 30-31 years old, but beggers can't be choosers. Now, as for the question about who is our #2, that'd obviously be Javy Vazquez who was three times the pitcher that Garland was last year and is set up to have his best season since he left the Expos. My concern is about which Contreras will show up, and I'm not certain that two of Danks, Floyd, Gonzalez, Egbert can be depended on for 30+ starts. We'll see though. With the reported "done deal" of Torii Hunter, this team just got two Gold Glovers up the middle, which will add quite a few wins to our total.

2007-2008 NHL Catch All Thread
Steve9347 replied to kapkomet's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I created a new thread because I thought it was big enough news, but the Blackhawks have hired John McDonough to be their President, which I believe is a fantastic move.
