QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ May 3, 2007 -> 01:18 PM) This team was built with a whole bunch of LOW OBP guys. That's what Ozzie likes. Guess what, that's why no one's on base when someone hits a home run. Thome is the only guy that's really a good OBP guy. If we had 4 or 5 guys with lifetime OBP near .400 - regardless of what they hit, there would be more runs scored. Dye and Konerko walk some and that helps. But, A.J., Crede, Uribe, CF, LF - low low OBP. I dont think Ozzie "likes" low OBP guys... and 4 or 5 guys with an OBP near .400... has there ever been such a lineup? Come on... 5 guys with an OBP near .400 would be like the best lineup ever, lets stay realistic here. I mean, come on... only 21 guys had an OBP of even .390 last year. Expecting to have four of them in your lineup??? KWAZY!

QUOTE(joeynach @ May 3, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) Exactly the point is you cant afford to sit around and wait for things to get better. You cant sit here and wait for Thome and Pods to come back and give them a couple weeks to get back in a rhythm and just hope everything will be ok. Heck by the time that happens, if it happens, this team might be 12 games out. If you want survive at least for this year you need to do something now. The Mack/Ozuna/Cintron/Terrero circus isn't an answer its not going to prevent us from dipping below .500. The only thing you can do is add some life to the lineup, new talented excited life. Bring up Fields and Owens, and along with Sweeney get these guys moving. Then get Pods and Thome back and hit the ground running in a lineup that is already kicking. If you just try and survive and wait until Pods and Thome get back most likely it will just be too late, it always works out that way. Problem is, everytime we depend on a young hitter, at least lately, they don't do anything (see Sweeney's 0-fer since being called up, or Anderson last year)... some teams have the studs in AAA, others don't. We seem to be the latter. The last thing this team needs is another guy who'll hit .220-.240 and swing for the fences all day (ala Josh Fields)... if anything, call up Owens, like you said, and let him run wild.

QUOTE(Texsox @ May 3, 2007 -> 12:52 PM) Here is an interesting question that no one has brought up., Certainly there will be smokers who can't go a few hours without a cigarette, and will have to stay home and avoid bars. Will there now be non smokers who will want to go to bars who may offset the business lost? Dude, I know that I and many friends have decided to stay home on various nights instead of hitting the bars, especially in the winter, bc we didnt want our clothes/coats reeking of cigarrette smoke... so yes.

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ May 3, 2007 -> 12:46 PM) Question. I have a friend who's dad owns a body shop. My friend and almost all the workers there smoke in the garage. Would a place like that have to ban smoking? Depends... do your customers like the interiors of their cars reaking when they are returned? It's not like people can't still step outside for a smoke, I don't see what the big deal is.

Let's not forget about Gallardo in the brew crew's system. I could definitely see Beane making a play at Pelfrey... but why not Johnny D?! heh.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ May 2, 2007 -> 05:50 PM) Exactly. Let them make non-smoking bars if there is such a big clamoring for them. But no, it is okay to use and abuse one legal drug but not another in the same establishment. OK, tell you what... if you are going to compare the two. That's like every person who buys a drink in there forcing their piss down your throat... bc thats what we as non-smokers get... the left over s*** that no one wants. QUOTE(mr_genius @ May 2, 2007 -> 07:10 PM) do i have the right to swing my arms at your nose? i guess if you came over to my house knowing i like to do that, than yea you should expect it (assuming i do not hit you, which would be illegal, than you would have no one to blame but yourself). no one forces people to go to a bar. if you don't want to breathe smoke, don't go. it's a simple solution. there is a big difference to polluting the air outside which everyone is forced to breathe or you DECIDING YOU WANT TO go into a bar and it is a smoking bar. or you can take your ass outside to get your sweet breath of toxic air, and come back in and breathe normally and happily... we can go outside and get a breath of fresh air... but doesnt the other way around make a whole hell of a lot more sense?

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 3, 2007 -> 11:02 AM) Soriano would be playing LF now, we could have used the $2.9 million from Pods' salary to sign Ponson or Ortiz for one year...and we would still have Floyd and Gio in the minors as insurance. How is Soriano and Ortiz not better than Mackowiak/Ozuna/Sweeney and Danks? KW wouldn't have dealt for Soriano unless he could have secured his services long-term, like he did with Garcia in 2004. With Garcia's salary out of the way, we would have been able to afford Soriano, and we wouldn't have been stupid enough to give him more than a 3 year deal, MAYBE 4. LOL. Dude, you're nuts if you think the Sox would've matched that offer. Soriano was on record saying he wanted to test FA, and there would have been no reason for him to sign an extension.
-
QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 3, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) Although I do wish we'd traded McCarthy for Soriano last July, that would give this team an entirely needed injection of speed and excitement. What the hell are you talking about? We would have still missed the playoffs last year, bc the last thing we needed was another guy swinging for the fences, and then he would have walked... to the cubs no less. The theory you propose is one that has this current team without the services of John Danks and Nick Massett on top of our pathetic crop... and they've been two bright spots. That would have been cataclysmicly bad. PS. Ichiro should be a Chicago White Sox when FA comes around... i think he's what this team needs, lol.
-
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 3, 2007 -> 09:06 AM) No doubt. Then we'll get excuses that we can't afford high payrolls and will need to start dropping large contracts. Hooray. The big sell off is very close... if this team is more than 7 games out by July, which I dont see how we won't be... say goodbye to a lot of guys. At least we had 2005!

QUOTE(fathom @ May 2, 2007 -> 01:59 PM) There's a couple of golden boys of baseball that wouldn't shock me if there names come up. I actually heard a fascinating story about three well known players recently, but I'll just keep them to myself for now. Good idea, since hte last person posting on soxtalk that kind of bulls*** made it a national story...

QUOTE(danman31 @ May 2, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) Yeah I know, my statement didn't imply that but it was a general statement. Whoever is on the clay side should have a huge advantage and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Is it even going to be on tv? I'd tune in. If they don't televise this they greatly missed the boat and undervalued the interest/market this would have. -
QUOTE(thedoctor @ May 2, 2007 -> 12:58 PM) generally, i point and laugh at the freakishly big. of course, i'm 5-3 so i get some of that myself. haha

Following a similar posting trend... I've always wondered this for some reason but what is your reaction to seeing naked dudes in public? I always used to think that they were weird and I'd stare a lot when I was small (heh). I still catch myself doing that once in a while, but then I realize I'm a naked dude myself. Now, I just look and think, "Man, they probably have some crazy sunblock, too." What annoys me most is when people ask if I wear clothing...ugh, that pisses me off. That, and when I'm a a party or something and people ask me to stand up and party naked. I often ask people at work questions like "Does it stick out when I lean back?" or "Do I look like a giant?" It's just something that has often made me curious. SO what do you think when you see a naked dude?
