  1. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 05:32 PM) Lighten up! Tell it to the 50K or more in NO who are stewing in their own feces without fresh water. I'm sure they'll see that this administration, which has shown such brilliance in decision making, is doing all they can.
  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 05:44 PM) Well....that sucked. That was the one place we couldn't afford for Ozuna to hit the ball. at some point the breaks are gonna have to start going our way
  3. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 05:36 PM) The Count looking very sharp so far. incredibly so. Have you ever seen him in so many 0-1, 0-2 counts?
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) Provide me with some historical guidence here. When is the last time that a catestophic event has essentially destroyed a major population center in the US? Running with that, how specifically should the federal government have been ready for a disaster of this scale, in this specific city, and how much should they have invested in it, waiting for it to happen one of these days? How much should they have stored, where should they have stored it, how much should they have spent to store it, how many people should have been kept on call for this how many different places in the country should we be preparing for catestrophic events just like this...etc. It is easy to be upset, but the reality is the logistics of what you are suggesting is nearly impossible. I haven't suggested anything logistical other than some generalizations on addressing the immediate needs of those stranded in NO. Like water and evactuation (by the way, it can handle war ships). Your basing your argument on the assumption that the goverment is doing all it can. Why do you think we have FEMA in the first place? That's all the historical guidance you need. It was established out of necessity to provide quick response to disaster relief situations and yes, they do have coordinated plans for shipping supplies like water, food and medicine into regions all over the country. They plan and strategize just like the pentagon does for potential disasters. I don't expect miracles but I damn sure don't like watching Americans in a major city living and dying in their own filth for four days without a major relief effort to assist them.
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:50 PM) To that one particular part of the city. Not everyone is there. You are talking about trying to track down a couple of hundred thousand people spread out all over all kinds of flooded areas, trapped in places, and not even mentioning the safety of the people who would be trying to get this stuff there in the first place. Can you imagine them driving a semi-tracker full of food and medicine into some of those areas, and a group of armed vigilantes killing the aid workers and hi-jacking the truck? A couple of days ago I couldn't have imagined it, today it wouldn't surprise me. The very first thing they have to do is restore law and order. Until they do that, they can't rescue people, they can help people, and they can organize the safe distribution of good and services to the masses. They've estimated 50-100K people remained in the city and many of them in concentrated areas. Fine, many are spread out. But 20K or more are at the convention center alone.
  6. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:45 PM) This is all very sad, but tossing around the blame right now to me, isn't very productive or fair. Understanding how a major American city could be thrown into chaos and destruction in a natural disaster is not only productive and fair, but mandatory in my opinion. While no one's blaming the federal government for a hurricane, I do hold them accountable for their response to this tragedy. I will scrutinize it, as we all should. After four days we can't get fresh water in there. You make your own judgements of that, I'll make mine.
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:37 PM) I'd rather have Blum at 2nd base than Willie. Another lineup tonight where we have 3 players with ZERO homers in the same lineup. I guarantee that not many AL teams in the last few years can say the same thing this late in the season. no s***. at least Shelton's not in the lineup tonight. He kills us.
  8. QUOTE(winodj @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:38 PM) The sheer desperation of all this is incredible. Can't we just "invade" NO, bring a bunch of trucks and ships in and just get those people out of there? Set up emergency relief centers at accessible locations around the city and drop in medics and supplies? Like...NOW?! It's been 4 days!!
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:35 PM) Oh boy, that's not good that Iguchi is out. We suffer such an offensive downgrade with Harris in the lineup. If we knew that Iguchi was having injury problems, and didn't try to upgrade at 2nd base over Willie, then that's a big blunder by KW. Willie's 0-13 against Johnson. :sleep
  10. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:32 PM) Harris now playing. According to Gameday: Pods Ozuna Everett Konerko Rowand Dye AJ Uribe Harris they said gooch was having trouble seeing out of his right eye?
  11. Iguchi's out of the lineup tonight, replaced by Harris. WTF??
  12. QUOTE(winodj @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) Contractors worked on the Levee project for FREE for a whole year without funding because it was so important... and then they stopped because they no longer could get the funds for the supplies necessary to finish the job. Some of the failed levees were actually only 80% complete. There's going to be a major backlash. Major. Politicians pointing fingers, civil rights leaders claiming discrimination, civil suits, negligence claims... :headshake
  13. QUOTE(winodj @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:25 PM) Federal Funding was not axed until 2002 and 2003. Homeland Security, The Iraq War and tax cuts were cited as reasons for the funding cuts. I stand corrected
  14. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 04:17 PM) OK.. question.. When the water is all gone and they tear down all the destroyed homes will they just rebuild on top of it thus raising NO higher than sea level? good question. They had a big flood in '95 at which time they came up with a massive civil engineering project to shore up the levees and pump systems, but federal funding went away in 2000 and the project has virtually died. I can't imagine abandoning a major U.S. city and port, but what do you do?
  15. does anyone know where you can get a game-to-game or month by month breakdown of a minor leaguer's stats?
  16. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) Can someone fill me in as far as talking about these 'snipers'? I haven't been paying enough attention to this, shame on me, but can someone tell me a little bit about what's going on...? I also saw an interview with a guy who was shuttling old folks out of a convalescent home to a shelter. On his way back he was carjacked. IIRC, they said there were 47 carjackings LAST NIGHT ALONE! madness Like they said on CNN, the big elephant in the living room that no one's talking about is that these are virtually all african-americans who are suffering, dying, looting and shooting.
  17. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) I am not up and down on the bandwagon. I have been extremely consistant all year long. I think our approach at the plate is terrible and have been on that all year long. If they dont change it, they will have a hard time winning. But win or lose I root for them. But when they do stupid s*** like swing for the fences or we put in silly lineups I guess I am not the guy to go RAH RAH RAH we just got 3 hit by crap. This team should be able to hit. I'm with you. Like I said,
  18. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 03:35 PM) I said it before, the biggest problem was that New Orleans has been knowingly relying on dumb luck for more than a century. It was never a question of IF they would get hit by the big storm, only WHEN. I think you're both right. There was a great article in the paper this morning about the history of NO and the Frenchman who settled it. His own engineers told him this was a terrible site for locating a settlement but he did it anyway. Wait a second! WE CAN BLAME FRANCE FOR THIS!!
  19. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:40 PM) What the hell is wrong with him...??? "Still, Bush told ABC-TV: “I’m not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn’t asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country’s going to rise up and take care of it.” “You know,” he said, “we would love help, but we’re going to take care of our own business as well, and there’s no doubt in my mind we’ll succeed. And there’s no doubt in my mind, as I sit here talking to you, that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city.” "And there's no doubt in my mind that there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq"
  20. QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:44 PM) We have the resources and people to work in these situations, we need them to step up and do their jobs. I don't believe Bush has made an error in this at all, including cutting his August vacation short. I also am glad he didn't tour the area, which IMHO is always a bulls*** pr stunt. He screwed the pooch for not moving faster on this one. Even conservative wonks are letting him have it.
  21. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:27 PM) That has been my silent fear for the last 3 days. More and more tragic. I'm speechless at what I'm seeing on TV and reading on the net. This is total devastation. Dead bodies lying around, garbage and feces, sweltering heat. And this thing hit 4 days ago. We knew it was coming 6 days ago. And everyone said it was going to be REAL BAD. I saw a reporter on CNN totally go off on Bush and the govt. for not doing more. He reconvened congress and they'll probably get there by tomorrow. The last time he did that was on a sunday night during a holiday and they were all there the next morning. The crisis? Terry Schiavo. :headshake
  22. QUOTE(Reddy @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 02:33 PM) so its a s***ty sig - threw it together in 10 seconds... but it somes up my feelings and, as i see, the feelings of most the rest of us! BRING ON SEPTEMBER!! it's right on the mark. Maybe it was a drop in intensity in August that aided the slide, I don't know, but I hope that with one month left in the season they'll get that urgency back and play with some fire.
  23. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 01:58 PM) http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/0...o.ap/index.html doesn't look good. They fear that they're going to find a lot of bodies, whole familes even, in the attics of many homes. They say a lot of people who survived fled to the attic when the water came rushing into the house, then when the attic started to fill with water they broke through the ceiling. Obviously, not all were able to do that and were trapped.
