  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 10:38 AM) Gabe Kapler on his career and the steroid era. This is an excellent read. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article....articleid=21574 I think he took Adderall to write that story. So well done.
  2. Wow, had no idea Kapler was so smart. Well done.
  3. QUOTE (glangon @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) Yes you can. It's not free though and you don't remember a lot afterwards Bucket list! thanks
  4. QUOTE (glangon @ Aug 19, 2013 -> 03:08 AM) As a relative board new comer but someone who has been watching the Sox for years (albeit from Sunny Scotland via MLBTV). I agree with Greg. I'd like to see us win with the youth, then make a splash for 2 or 3 hitters plus a couple of bullpen arms and I think we will be in contention. Most of the games lost this year have been by one or two runs which have been down to bad hitting or bad defense. If we tighten up defensively and bring in a few hitters, it could be a more fun season next year. Do they have Scotch tastings in Scotland like they have wine tastings elsewhere? Can you visit the distilleries?
  5. I'm glad to see PK healthy enough to play out the string. Not like the Sox were going to win the division if he put up .300/40/100. But he's a class act and we're lucky he's passing the torch to Beckham.
  6. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 05:24 PM) Nice 1st inning and Forte with 58 yd. run and Cutler TD pass. Cutler's a turnover machine this preseason.
  7. Jeff Manto...does he deserve any credit for Gordon's turnaround?
  8. Jayson Stark wrote an article about Cabrera's place among the all-time best RH hitters. Link He doesn't place Frank Thomas in the list of 10 best hitters in the modern era, though does at least acknowledge that you could make an argument for him. But consider this: 500 homers,.300 average, 1600 walks,.400 on-base percentage, 550 slugging. The members of that club are Ted Williams, Babe Ruth and Frank Thomas. The only right-handed member of that group is Frank Thomas. Make an argument "for" Frank? How in the f*** can you argue against him?
  9. For s***s and giggles I was perusing the St. Louis Cardinal 40 man roster and I'm pretty shocked by how many of their players are mid-to-late round draft picks (by the cardinals) who are making significant contributions. When a guy like Matt Adams (23rd round) develops into a keeper in 4 years, you can't help but question the impact of player development. La Russa certainly had a say in how the Cardinals drafted and developed talent, and he wants a high-level position with a team. So in regard to the thread title, I'd like to see a plan where Tony is hired to replace Kenny and guide Rick Hahn (and fire Buddy "Jared Mitchell is a God" Bell).
  10. too bad - would've been the best hit of Royce Clayton's career.
  11. I'd still bunt to the left side here. Make Cabrera charge and throw to home.
  12. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 09:11 PM) As s*** as this team is....the Astros are even worse. They really are. Think we'll stay ahead of the Marlins?
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 08:22 PM) I'm all for losing for draft position, but I'll gladly accept a Garcia walkoff Anything off Bonderman would be nice. Still don't like that tool.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 07:19 PM) DAMMIT RAMIREZ please, just go away....!!! 19 errors Martinez didn't slide....just came in standing up. Alexei is so weak... He will make the spectacular play but if there's a hint of contact at 2b he bails
  15. how long before detroit's saddled with bloated payroll and aging veterans?
  16. f*** this team is so frustrating. Phegley doesn't run from 2nd last night and Santiago dogs it to 1st
