GAME THREAD 7-19-05 SOX vs Tigers
Stephen replied to Controlled Chaos's topic in 2005 Season in Review
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:12 PM) The more I think about Contreras, the more I dislike him. I don't like anything about the guy. Can't stand to watch him pitch, can't stand how he wastes his talent, can hardly stand to think about him pitching (especially in a game with any pressure). Since he's been in the league, he's been a piece of work. He signed a contract with the Yankees while staying in a room paid for by the Red Sox. Struggles, then is reunited with his family...continues to struggle. Moves to a basically pressure-free team and struggles. Hasn't learned how to pitch in 40 years on earth, but somehow makes like 8 million dollars a year. Escapes from Castro's communist regime, but somehow still lacks balls. I can't even force myself to like this guy, even though I still wish he'd do well. But, I wish even more that he'll be traded for someone that will help us more. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. I right there with you man. I fail to see why everyone thinks this guy is worth so much. Yea, he's got talent, but the road to the Majors is littered with talent that has been left at the road side because they couldn't put it together. I'm baffled at his salary, just blows me away. -
GAME THREAD 7-19-05 SOX vs Tigers

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:59 PM) Duque may be a problem. COntreras has been all we could ask out of a 4 or 5 starter. He's done an awesome job. Only be "out" of 3 games in which he's pitched horribly. He's had more than 3 bad games. -
GAME THREAD 7-19-05 SOX vs Tigers
Stephen replied to Controlled Chaos's topic in 2005 Season in Review
Jose has a career ERA over 5. I don't understand how he can go out there and stink it up most of the time and yet most defend him like he's this amazing pitcher, who's having a bad year. Jose sucks and other than a few outings here and there, has shown us that. I wish KW would trade him just so I didn't have to hear the excuses thrown out in defense of Jose. He can give up 7 runs and someone will say "he totally dominated except for those 3 innings." I just don't understand the attachment to a guy who's been mediocre his entire career and has only been wearing a sox uniform for just over a year. -
I probably wouldn't mind fairweather fans so much if I didn't live in the biggest fairweather city of them all, Dallas Texas. These fans talk so much s*** to me in football (i'm a niners fan), baseball (even though the Sox aren't direct rivals, I still hear it from them when they beat us), basketball and especially hockey (i'm a Sabres fan-glutton for punishment I presume). When I moved here in 1995, I couldn't locate a Dallas Stars fan to save my life, then they started winning and making the playoffs. Now everybodies a fan here. Too bad they don't know jacks*** about hockey. With that thought in mind, imagine trying to argue the 99 Stanley Cup Finals no goal fiasco with these clowns. Cowboys-as soon as the team sucks, suddenly they are rooting for someone else, using Jerry Jones as an excuse, but as soon as they win a few games, the smack talk gears back up and I hear about how dedicated they are and that it's been turned around. It's a constant battle. If I could have back all the time i've wasted arguing with these baffoons, i'd be a much younger man. I've lived in several places, visited many cities, and talk year around with fans from all over. Never have I met a bigger collection of fairweather fans (and idiots), than the ones that reside right here in Dallas, TX and the surrounding metroplex.

I'd be a closer and i'd come out to Bahwithabah by Kid Rock

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 03:50 PM) ^^^ Quick Bandwagon Fan Quiz 1.) Name atleast 20 men on the current 25 man roster. 2.) What was the White Sox starting rotation in order the first week of the season> 3.) Who is the current closer of the Sox? 4.) Who is the Starting 2nd baseman of the White Sox? 5.) Who is the V.P. of Marketing for the Chicago White Sox? 6.) Who is the current Utility man on the White Sox? 7.) Who is Kevin Walker and does he suck? 8.) Is Timo Perez underpaid at $1mil? #5 will show how closely you follow the team for sure. Actually I would remove some of the newer questions and put some older questions in there. Most of the bandwagon fans will know who Kevin Walker is by now along with the current closer. Here's the top 8 I would ask. 1.) Name atleast 20 men on the current 25 man roster. 2.) What position did Ozzie Guillen play as player? 3.) Who is Jack Mcdowell? 4.) When's the last time the Sox won the pennant? 5.) Did the Sox make it to the playoffs in 1993 and who did they lose to? 6.) Who is Carlton Fisk? 7.) Who is Robin Ventura? 8.) When was US Cellular field built? If you jumped on the bandwagon this year, then just about every one of those would stump you.

Hate'em. They are just going to jump ship when the team is winning and that pisses me off.

I'm worried. Looking at Contreras numbers from the past, it's the same story. A few games here and there he's good, then a few bad games before eventually finishing out the year with an ERA above 5. Right now he's in the top 10 in home runs and walks and this is after all his "good" starts. I think he's too wishy washy for people to assume that he's finally got his control or he's going to develop into that guy. Garland developed because he's still young. Contreras is in his mid 30's (so he says) or later. Development is over. He is what he is. Hopefully his mediocrity will be good enough. But i'd feel better with us securing someone else to fill his role, especially with El Duque's health in question.
-
I think Contreras is a waste of time. In his short career his "flashes of brilliance" have been just that. He'll be in the 5.00+ ERA club very soon. I would much rather take my chances with Schmidt who has shown he can be good for an extended period of time as opposed to a guy who everyone is waiting to be good.

Would love to see him here, but I just don't see it happening. Even if we put together a package the Stro's liked, I don't see him saying yes for reasons others have already stated.
-
I'm going to pretend this thread never happened. Bad bad bad Karma here.

I admit, i've been anti-shingo all season. He scares me, but his recent outings have began to make me warm up to him. He still makes me nervous but if he continues at this pace, i'll eventually be sold on him.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) I went Sunday as well. You're right, it was brutal. I think Garland still has a crook in the back of his neck from turning and watching that Mench shot. I used to work on Industrial right south of 183 in Euless. Went to Al's Hamburgers quite a bit for lunch. Sounds like you're pretty close to there. I'll be at a game or two in August when they come back. We'll have to hook up then, if not before. I live less than a mile from Al's hamburgers. Pretty good food there. Sounds good to me. I'll pm you some contact information before the end of the day. I plan on trying to make the games in August but I know one of them is a day game and I haven't come up with a plan to get that day off. Seeing how I just took a week off last month makes it difficult for me to get time off as I haven't been here at my current job long enough to earn vacation.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 11:26 PM) cool. have to meet you out there one day for a game and a cold one. you north or south of I-30? my wife works at 360 and avenue k (roughly). Most definately. North. I live off of Greenoaks. Were you at any of the Sox games last month? I missed the Friday game that Bmac got shelled in and then sat in the drizzle for 5 hours waiting the Saturday game out only to have it postponed. So I only got to see the Sunday game and unfortunately, that game was brutal.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 07:28 PM) Summers suck (this one is starting to - bad) but I woud rather live in this climate then Chicago's in the winter. I will say, though, that I miss the falls. Where abouts do you live? We're within a stone's throw of Texas Motor Speedway... I'm in Arlington about 2 miles down the street from Ameriquest field.

QUOTE(soxhawks @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 07:15 PM) i would rather watch fishing than the NBA Same here. I don't see how anyone can watch basketball. Boring doesn't even say it. Went to one NBA game a couple of years ago and walked out at the half. -
QUOTE(YahtzeeSox @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 02:37 PM) No. The Sox have to win a World Series before the Cubs. That's just all there is to it. So I guess my opinion differs from yours'. I do not want to lose to the Cubs in the series. I agree. I don't even live in Chicago and wouldn't have to put up with half as much crap as you guys would. I just don't want to hear the trash that would be spewing from the cubs mouths for a very long time. God, that would be one long year. And can you imagine the media? Cubs this cubs that. I'm getting dizzy just thinking about it. I'm sorry but under no circumstances should the Cubs or Rangers win a World Series, and I feel that way all because of the fans of those respective teams.

QUOTE(soxhawks @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 06:11 PM) he is mad that the players association didnt take the first deal, and is pissed off at all the people who are saying hockey is dead. i have to agree with him on the most part because as a hockey fan we don't need the people who rip on hockey to come back to it when it returns to greatness, hopefully. Hate to break it to you, but hockey IS near dead. Hockey on ESPN draws a smaller crowd than womans basketball...let me say that again...womans basketball. When it does come back, who's going to broadcast games? ESPN says they don't want it, ABC doesn't want it. who? And before the lockout, I can't remember the last time I was at a sold out arena (i'm a sabres fan but I go to the occasional stars game here). What few fans the sport has, are being run off with greed and arrogance because of this lock out. Being the hockey fanatic that I am, hope that the sport can recover from this move. I love hockey, but there is no denying the sport is in deep deep trouble. -

As if I didn't hate him enough already. Now I have a new reason to add to the list. -
I know I have some of those guys but i'm not so sure they are in a Sox uniform. If I don't get too busy, i'll check for you this weekend.
-
I just hope Bmac doesn't get shelled like he did down here in Texas. Hopefully we can get him plenty of run support and he pitch well enough to keep us in the game. *crossing fingers*

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 06:25 AM) Now other then the Sox and summer, why in the HELL would you want to go back to Chicago from Dallas? I absolutely hate Texas summers. Grew up in the hot, spend 3 years in the army stationed in the desert and now 100+ temps here in Dallas, no thanks. I love the cold and despise the heat. In fact, I usually take vacations in the winter to colder places like Colorado, New York, etc, lol, I'm weird like that. Thanks for the input guys. I do have a car and commuting wouldn't be a problem. Dallas mass transit is awful, so you have to have a car here. With traffic, it takes me over hour to get to work (work in downtown Dallas) but without traffic, I can make it in 30 minutes. I may rent a car next trip up to Chicago so I can drive around and see if I can find an area that I like so I can have a better idea of where I want to move to.
