  1. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 04:47 AM) If Cleveland wins the WC that means the Sox would have to win the the division winner from either the Eas or West. Among the playoff contenders theres no matchup I find particularly favorable or unfavorable to the Sox. Plus who I cheer for does not have any practical effect on the world so it doesn't matter anyway. Actually I do kind of fear a Red Sox team with a healthy Schilling but I'm not sure we'll see a healthy Schilling this season.
  2. Anyone else think of the Flaming Lips when they heard about Dye's spider bite?
  3. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 02:14 AM) f*** b mac... from watching him, he wont ever be anything in the MLB... hes afraid to throw his change and he sucks. I heard you are afraid to throw your change due to an ugly incident back in Santiago. Its okay man, let it go.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 27, 2005 -> 09:51 PM) Twins win, lead is 11 games. I seriously can't understand the belief here that the Sox have locked up a spot in the division. And I don't understand how people can be worried. The Sox have it as good as it gets at the end of July. I couldn't bring myself to cheer for the Twins but I would like to see Cleveland take the wild card to get the AL Central some respect as a tough division. I also have memories of Cleveland as a worthy rival in the mid-nineties, where as the Twins as a rivals are more like gnats that won't go away.
  5. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 02:09 PM) Can we use position players too. Timo at 1st base and anywhere else he plays. I hate him catching with 1 hand its very scary. The Count is the only one that really makes me nervous. More like frustrated with his insistence upon doing nothing with his talent. There are a few guys I have absolutely no confidence in and therefore don't get nervous, I just bow my head and close my eyes. Those guys would be Timo, Vizcaino and Walker.
  6. I know I'm new so this could have already been discussed somewhere but I looked back a few pages and I didn't spot a similar thread. While the rumors about Jason Schmidt run wild and Jose Contreras slumps I think people have lost sight of the fact that the Sox have still allowed fewer runs to score than any other team in the AL while the offense has been middle of the pack. The Sox need some more offense more than they need more pitching and the weakest hitters in our lineup are Crede and Uribe. I'm inclined to say the team would best benefit from acquiring a third baseman who can hit, perhaps Rob Mackowiak who is a lefty, even better. And I definitely would try and find a replacement for Crede before Uribe since its easier to find third basemen who can hit than shortstops and Uribe hit well last year whereas Crede's mediocre season is exactly in line with what he's done in the past. As far as our rotation, at this point I'm mostly concerned with the playoffs and I have confidence either El Duque will be healthy or McCarthy will have established himself by then. Hell, Contreras could even put it together but I'm just about as big of a Contreras detractor as there is. So I think the talent is there for a four man playoff rotation but there really is no option other than Crede at third. In the pen, we have four good relievers, that should be enough. What do you guys think?
  7. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 03:29 PM) Well you said even when he was going good he was putting a lot of men on base and that wasn't true. Sorry the wording was unclear. I did not mean specifically when he was going good he was putting a lot of runners on base. When he was going good he was still walking a lot of batters and allowing a lot of homers. Fortunately he wasn't allowing a lot of hits and I guess his timing was good on the homers. And he definitely is not a guy that goes deep into games. I suppose its just frustrating right now because he's been so bad but summing up Contreras's performances he's no more than a back of the rotation guy. Thats what Loaiza is and he's cheaper.
  8. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 03:15 PM) Actually before this last string of starts he was top 20 in the majors in whip so that's not entirely true. But you can't just count the good stretches.
  9. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 02:54 PM) Oh god, I couldn't agree more. It's the most frusterating thing in the world to see a guy who doesn't know what the hell he's doing out there shaking off one of the best game calling catchers in baseball. I think thats a great reason to not go with Jose. I am just not falling in love with Contreras' stuff and ignoring the fact that he's remarkably inconsistent and has yet to put together a good major league season. How stupid do you have to be to pitch like Jose? Keep it out of the zone so everyone walks, don't listen to your catcher, get hammered. Seriously you would think all he needs to do is look at his results to realize he needs to change his strategy on the mound. And I don't think even when his ERA was lower he was awesome. He is pretty much a six inning pitcher because he is inefficient with his pitches and he always finds ways to put runners on base.
  10. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 02:42 PM) I wish Esteban the best and I'd be glad to face him this year however I do believe he'd be much worse then Contreras if he was still around. Based on what exactly? Did you see Contreras' last start?
  11. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 02:14 PM) They (NYY) are paying a portion of the deal I believe. Plus Loaiza looked horrible last year, was going to be a FA and Kenny figured he's take Jose based on his stuff and the possibility that he would thrive outside of the NY spotlight. From what I heard NY only paid the difference in their salaries for the remainder of the '04 season. And as horrible as Loaiza looked, its not like Contreras was any better.
  12. I wouldn't mind having Loaiza in the four spot instead of Contreras. I still don't get that deal, taking on a guy with no record of success and a big contract.
  13. Does anyone actually like that the ASG determines home field advantage for the World Series? Maybe I'm just projecting my opinion onto other people but it seems like everyone agrees it is a terrible idea.
