  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 25, 2017 -> 12:12 PM) I'm only okay if he's using it to funnel the wealth from plutocrats to something good, but it's just going to his own bank account I'm sure. It really is like the final blow to the optimism people placed on him in 2008. Yeah, this is one of those issues where I really don't see the outrage. Obama can both provide a lot of positive value to underserved communities AND earn money speaking on Wall Street. But maybe I'm not seeing the forest for the trees.
  2. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 25, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) Doesn't have to be the first 100 days, it's the platform generally that Democrats offer/offered. SS2k5 posted somewhere else that Democrats and Independents don't believe the Democratic party represents their interests, more so than conservatives and the GOP. So you have Repubs that like Trump despite not agreeing or liking his decisions because at least he's not a Democrat, and you have Dems and Independents that don't like the Democratic party because they don't feel like the party adequately represents their interests. At some point the logical conclusion is that for a lot of people, they aren't buying what the Democrats are selling. But that is what the article said. Crimson's response was better written than mine. This article wasn't about people who didn't vote for Trump deciding to do so because they dislike Democratic policies. It was an article about people who didn't vote for Trump moving his way because they don't like the media or protesters. Edit to address your edit. This past election showed that there is an ideological split in the Democratic Party between the establishment Democrats (Hillary Clinton) and the Progressive wing of American politics (Sanders). My guess is that is influencing what is referenced in that study.
  3. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 25, 2017 -> 08:53 AM) Maybe, MAYBE Democrats should consider the notion that people don't totally agree with their platform/policies? Maybe? What policies have Democrats pushed in Trump's first 100 days that would cause people on the fence to move to Trump?
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 20, 2017 -> 02:58 PM) This isn't even an argument I want. I generally like Sanders. I think it does take a lot to really pull an institution like the Democratic party out of its status quo. BUT, if Sanders fans want to know what annoys me most, it's acting like there was no progressive movement in the democratic party prior to them mentioning it. To look at the 2012 platform vs. the 2004 one is crazy. To look at it vs 1996 even crazier. I hated Bill Nelson, Ben Nelson Mary Landreiu, Blanche Lincoln so much. But, as much as they made ACA much worse, they still voted for it. They made it capable to pass things. So yeah, I'll take a congress with people like this again, so don't primary Joe Manchin just to prove a point. This. So much this.
  5. QUOTE (ptatc @ Apr 21, 2017 -> 10:28 AM) Back to the risk discussion, others have said they don't like him as a prospect. So it's up to the evaluation of the Sox scouts to determine if he is worth that amount if the price escalates. IF the Sox scouts think he's a top 25 prospect in the game, I think they need to be willing to go deep into their pockets to get him signed. With the complete lack of obvious impact position talent in the minors after Moncada and (hopefully) Collins, getting a top 25 prospect without giving anything up would be a huge addition to the system. If the Sox scouts love Robert, I'll be very disappointed if the Sox come in second.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 17, 2017 -> 07:23 AM) Obviously we have been here way too many times before, and his current production is unsustainable. But you look at this guy and wonder how come he can't hit .280-.290 with power? His exit velocity was top 5 in baseball last year and he totally sucked. Chances are disappointment will prevail, but in rebuilding years, players playing like Avi is currently playing keep things at least a little interesting. Yep. And that's the thing about Avi's high BABIP. Dude is hitting .465 right now. Of COURSE his BABIP is high. He's obviously going to regress some, and he's probably going to regress a lot, but there's a chance that the light has gone on and he's going to be the guy who hits .280 or .290 with power.
  7. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 03:44 PM) This. Simple and plain, it's irrelevant to this situation. It's pretty scary how the internet and media have basically become the "got ya!" police always looking to malign the character of people. Holy crap, Rabbit and I agree! But I will say, this pre-dates the internet by a lot. I mean, rape victims have been put on trial forever because of the way they dress or whatever. And there is a reason that the Rules of Evidence have not one, but two rules that relate to when you can admit evidence of prior bad acts, or character evidence. People have always felt better about putting somebody away if they "have bad character."
  8. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 03:16 PM) And then put up a fit about it to the point where police were called. Sure. There's a reason that prior bad acts are generally (subject to certain exceptions) NOT admissible in a courtroom. If it's not relevant to that particular offense, it doesn't matter. Edit because of bad proofreading...
  9. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 12:14 PM) You're making it seem like he doesn't think there was any wrongdoing there. You can try and paint him as insensitive but the greater point is calling to question why this is the number one story in America. Why is this the media spectacle it is? There are much bigger atrocities going on and stories that should actually demand the public's attention. This is just a crew messing up by not incentivizing anyone to voluntarily get off the plane and the Chicago Aviation Police responding in a completely inappropriate, overzealous and unacceptable fashion. That being said, there is one victim here. People just love to be righteous and jump on UA because their experience does suck. I have no problem with people responding to inadequate service and speaking out against wrong doing, but the priority and the amount of importance people associate to this story is perverted. There is one victim here and it is a rich man who suffered temporarily. No one is belittling his situation or letting UA off the hook by looking at this story in the proper context. Just because people hate UA doesn't mean this should overshadow the real issues in the country/world. People can be mad about more than one thing at a time. There is plenty of reason for people to be outraged about video of a guy being dragged off his seat on an airplane after being bumped. There's also plenty of reason to be outraged about a judge being shot in Chicago. Or Assad using sarin gas in Syria. Or the shooting in the school in California. Being mad about each and every one of those things is possible!
  10. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) As Hawk would say, where's he gonna play? I know Jimenez is the main piece and an OF, but Happ and Candelerio are both 2B and 3B, and the infield is pretty covered. I suppose we could use another 3B prospects, but we really need OF. I am far from a Cub follower, so alot of you guys probably know the Cubs guys better than I, but isn't Happ supposed to be a butcher at 2B? Pipeline's scouting report on Happ says that most evaluators outside the Cubs organization think Happ ends up in LF.
  11. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 02:59 PM) It doesn't make sense to gut the farm when they very well could need that depth in the future They will need to replace Lackey and Arrieta (assuming he does not resign), but I see them using other means than depleting the farm That argument literally applies to every farm system. It doesn't make sense for the Rockies to move Rodgers, Pint and Tapia because they might need that depth in the future. It doesn't make sense for the Yankees to move Torres, Frazier, Mateo, etc. because they might need that depth in the future. Bryant, Russell, Baez, Schwarber, and Almora (assuming he becomes part of that Cubs' core) are under team control for the foreseeable future. The Cubs are the team in exactly the position to use their farm assets to bolster the big league club. That's not to say that they will, but World Series favorites gutting the farm system makes way more sense than teams chasing wild card berths.
  12. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 01:48 PM) Cubs have some nice hitting prospects to offer. Jimenez, Almora and Candelerio are pretty interesting too. Jiminez, Happ, Candelerio, and a flyer is kind of the ideal trade for the Sox rebuild. Three top 100 hitting prospects (including two in the top 30) really helps with the rebuild. Makes sense from the Cubs side as well since Happ and Candelerio look blocked for the foreseeable future. If Almora hits for them this year, then Jimenez is as well.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 01:25 PM) Just a very stupid group of people made worse by their stance of never, ever backing down when they are shown to have made a mistake. Absolutely this. Spicer clarifying the comment to essentially say, well Hitler never used sarin gas dropped from planes on his people in 2017 makes it look even worse. The intent of the comment is clearly to try to make Assad LOOK WORSE THAN HITLER. It was a terrible comparison. Back down and apologize.
  14. QUOTE (G&T @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 10:04 AM) To be fair, that isn't a reasonable process. There has to be a cap or else the compensation could be in the millions of dollars by the time someone takes it, since the passengers know the airline has no leverage. Employees can't have that kind of discretion. In any event, this wasn't an overbooked flight. This guy was removed for their own employee, which I think, is what is causing the outcry. If the guy won't leave because another passenger had rights to the seat, then the conversation is different. I believe the FAA already has limits in place for involuntary bumping (if you get to your destination more than 4 hours late, you get 400% of your one way fare in cash). So we're not talking about a millions of dollars thing. In this instance, I find it hard to believe that nobody would have jumped at something like $2k in free flights to free up the seats and save a PR nightmare.
  15. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 09:21 AM) Not a good sign, but may be understandable if he's scrambling for 2017 guys. Yeah, I have to imagine that Underwood will be hitting Chicago once the '17 scramble is done, and once the staff has been completed. Particularly since I don't think there's a single kid on the board still in '17 from Chicago, and other than Ayo, I don't think there's much up there in '18 either.
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 11:50 AM) Given the general goal of the season, he doesn't bother me much. And if he keeps on sucking, I don't think he will be around long enough to bother me He bothers me to the extent that he's taking ABs from Davidson, a guy who might still have some upside at the MLB level.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 09:33 AM) Wasn't this a Sunday night flight? Probably a lot harder to find volunteers when people need to get back home to get to work/school for Monday. They could have also kept increasing the voucher amount until they got 4 volunteers. This. My parents have taken the vouchers before, but they are retired. My wife and I have talked about jumping at the offers before, but the deal needs to be really, really good to rationalize missing another day of work from a Sunday flight...
  18. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Apr 6, 2017 -> 02:12 PM) I like Matt Davidson I feel like Davidson needs to get 400-500 ABs this year, even if Frazier and Abreu are around. Maybe he gets some of his shine back and you have a league average 3B for the next several years...
  19. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 12:24 PM) So, Illinois now has Nichols and Finke as their frontcourt, right? Black. DJ Williams can probably play the 4 in this system. And I'd expect Illinois to be really active in the 5th year transfer market on bigs.
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 12:14 PM) But my point is this is your default operating assumption. There has not been a recruit who Illinois has lost out on that has not had the "wellp, he got a better offer". Come on now bmags. This is the default setting for some portion of EVERY fanbase. To state that it's unique to Illinois is silly. As to Tilmon, I'll echo what plenty of people on here already have said. THIS recruitment was dirty when Illinois got his verbal. It was dirty when they fought off Ford and SLU on Signing Day. And it's dirty now when he wants out. It's ridiculous that Illinois has had to go through this with Tilmon three times.
  21. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 11:25 AM) I agree with you here, but the big problem is that Trump invites those sorts of attacks whereas Biden or Kaine don't. Biden is a bumbling fool but he's not malicious about it. He doesn't piss people off. Trump does. Well, and Trump has involved some of his kids in his administration in a way that the Bushes, Clintons, and Obamas did not. Barron Trump should be off limits. Tiffany Trump should be off limits. But Eric, Donald, Jr., and Ivanka are public officials who are involved in the administration or Trump's business. That's relevant to public discourse. They shouldn't be harassed, but they are subject to scrutiny.
  22. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) As long as you won't have issue when Trump abuses the system three years down the line. There are a lot of people around here that are blind to the fact that all of the actions you defend are just precedent for Trump to do the same against your team. This is about government overreach and the disintegration of the fourth amendment. Again, there is no evidence that the Obama administration had surveillance up on the Trump campaign, or the Trump transition team. What appears to have happened is that the intelligence community DID have surveillance running on Russians and other foreign operatives. This is customary! Every Presidential administration does this! I would be disappointed if the Trump administration wasn't doing this! Then, that intelligence either picked up calls between those operatives and members of the Trump team, including Flynn OR picked up calls between those operatives discussing members of the Trump team. Those calls might be directly relevant to an FBI investigation into Russian influence on the 2016 election! At no point does the evidence show that the intelligence community tapped the phones of members of the Trump team. That would be illegal absent a warrant! You see why those situations are different right? Finally, for a guy who is really pro-Wikileaks, I find it very odd that your posts in this thread are way more concerned with leaks about Flynn than about the fact that Flynn might have been engaged in illegal behavior.
  23. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 10:33 AM) Susan Rice was one of Obama's most trusted officials. No one is saying Rice was working on her own or had some personal motive. There's just further proof, after the Flynn leak, that Obama's administration was using the intelligence apparatus to sabotage Trump's presidency before he even took office. I'm not sure how clearer this can be. The facts that we know thus far show that the intelligence agencies were monitoring Russian officials. Those agents had communications with Trump officials or about Trump officials. If the Trump campaign, or transition team, were revealed to be involved in illegal activities, intelligence procedure would be to "unmask" those officials. I'm not sure how that equates to the "Obama administration using the intelligence apparatus to sabotage Trump's presidency before he even took office."
  24. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Apr 4, 2017 -> 04:16 PM) I suspect next year will be rough and they'll be back on the bubble. Losing Hill is going to be tough. Who's your go to guy on this team? JCL? He's too inconsistent. Much like the Sox, at least there's hope going forward. I can watch a losing team if I know it's building towards something. When it's a losing team that has no hope, like the last few years, that's when it's tough to watch. I'm hoping that Frazier or Mark Smith (if he comes to IL) are the leading scorer by the end of the season. But if JCL's ball handling improves, he could average 14-16 a night. Finke, in Underwood's offense, could potentially do the same. There are some scoring options, and if you add a guard or two who can create their own offense, IL could end the season as a pretty good offensive team. Next year's roster is going to be young, it's going to take some time to mesh, but it is also going to be one of the more talented Illini rosters in awhile, top t bottom.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 4, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) This is a name I was thinking of too. Great call. The big thing I would like to see happen this year is Hickman, Fisher, and Adolfo all stay healthy and get a full year of development. In addition to Alec Hansen, these are the guy you could see explode up the top 10 lists this year. This is a good list. Big years from Fisher and Adolfo would be huge for the organization's position player depth. I'm not sure Hansen counts here since he's knocking on top 100 lists and the organization's top 10 list already, but if Hansen stays healthy and builds on last year, the second wave of pitching talent in the system looks really good.
