QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:05 AM) And in that same vein, we really should quit pretending that the true right wing is a new thing as well. There have always been ultra-nationalists in politics. There are always been some pretty extreme religious views in politics. Their have also been some pretty disgusting racists to even hold office. I know Indiana had a Klan member for a governor in the 20's along with most legislators. Woodrow Wilson screened Birth of a Nation IN the White House. None of these things are new. All those examples predate the Civil Rights Act. I don't think there's any question that the true right wing of the Republican Party has more influence on the Trump candidacy than they have had on any Presidential candidate in my lifetime. That growing level of influence in national politics is important and worth discussing.

QUOTE (kevo880 @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 01:09 PM) RiNo (River North) has been blowing up lately too. Great Divide has a new brewery and taproom over that way that's pretty awesome. Echoing a lot of Kevo's recommendations. The Tennyson area is great but it's on the other side of Denver from where you are staying. Denver Beer Co. has one of the nicest patios of any brewery and is walkable from downtown. I'd recommend Ratio Beerworks in the River North area. If you are looking for good food and great beer together, Crafty Fox, Hops and Pie, Freshcraft, and Colorado Plus are great options. If you are looking to get a hike in and aren't renting a car, go to Golden - not that far out of the city. There's a couple of pretty solid hikes that start right outside of downtown Golden (Chimney Gulch starts right outside Golden) and Golden has some really great breweries (Mountain Toad and Cannonball Creek in particular).

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 08:31 AM) Basically this. The Libertarians and the Green Party both have a bunch of nutty policies the further down their platform you get (no income tax, no public education, and no Social Security are big ones from the Libertarians). But I suspect a lot of that is because they are fringe parties and with the small size of the party, the platform can be swayed by the fringe elements. If the Libertarians can use this election to mainstream some of their ideas and really become small government (not no government) and socially liberal party, they might actually find some legitimate traction.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 10, 2016 -> 10:53 AM) I could be wrong, but aren't political contributions public to begin with or are you referring to credit card numbers? They leaked credit card numbers and social security numbers if I remember right - and this wasn't just donors giving hundreds of thousands of dollars (which still would be bad!) - it was DNC contributors who provided as little as $100. There's not a lot of "journalistic integrity" in dumping that information.

2016 Rio Olympics Thread

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 10:33 AM) Screw that. I want to watch it in primetime and I don't blame them. They paid massive amounts of money for this and as such want to maximize ratings. I don't have an issue if some other channel or online you could stream live, but I don't think their primary platform (i.e., NBC over the air) should just air stuff live and say screw the tape delay. So NBC is literally only tape delaying things by an hour. Ledecky's swim could have easily aired live during the prime time broadcast. NBC opted not to do so. It's one thing to air things on tape delay when the time change is several hours difference, but the only reason for it in Rio is that NBC literally doesn't consider this a sports broadcast... they consider it reality TV. http://www.sportingnews.com/athletics/news...0a12srewzuyl81k So echoing everyone else in this thread, blame NBC for filling every 10 minutes of the primetime broadcast with athlete profiles rather than airing the events live. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 4, 2016 -> 02:29 PM) Why? Some of us think Hillary is a pathological liar who should be in jail. No way in hell I'd vote for her. No way I'd vote for Trump. So why is that sad? Hillary to some of us Americans is a gosh awful candidate, one of the worst in history as a matter of fact. Why is that so "sad?" Because the facts don't support the argument...

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 09:41 AM) How is he getting a pass? On a daily basis he's being talked about in a negative way for the dumb things he says/does. That's all you can do at this point. He's not an elected official. He seems to be getting a pass from voters...

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 03:10 PM) I know but the majority, especially about the Presidential campaign is not. And it's not a bad thing either. Like i said it's entertaining. To me, the biggest problem with this election is that there is a false equivalency being made that states Clinton and Trump are opposite sides of the same coin. That cannot be further from the truth. Whether you like the Clintons or not, Hillary Clinton has not called to stop all Muslims from immigrating to the US. Hillary Clinton has not called Mexicans "rapists" and "murderers." Hillary Clinton has not threatened to back out of NATO because other countries aren't pulling their weight. Hillary Clinton has not wished for the glory days when you could rough up protesters, or offered to pay the legal bills of a guy who punched a protester. Hillary Clinton has not invited a foreign country to hack her competitor and influence the election. In this forum, we have had people laugh off Trump's comments. He's joking! He's talking about an unlikely scenario! This election isn't a simple difference in political philosophies (though that exists - the idea of Trump appointing multiple Supreme Court justices is terrifying). This is about an election where the Republican nominee's temperament makes him singularly unqualified to hold the highest office in the country. This isn't Romney, McCain, either of the Bushes, Reagan, etc. where I disagree with their philosophy on governance or social issues. It's something more than that. Simply put, Donald Trump is a special kind of bad in Presidential politics in my lifetime. If you live in a swing state, please pay attention to the polls. A vote for anyone other than Hillary Clinton in those states is a vote for Trump.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 27, 2016 -> 11:28 AM) Absent a smoking gun document like an email from the WH to the IRS saying "go f*** with these guys," you're never going to have actual proof. However, much like we do with racial discrimination, we can look at the disparate treatment of one group versus another and infer there was some bulls*** going on, which WAS the case in the IRS scandal. Trump's actual quote today was "Russia, if you are listening, I hope you are able to find the 33,000 emails that are missing — I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press." Arguing over what administration used what clout to have the IRS investigate its political enemies is a far cry from a Presidential candidate asking a foreign country to hack their Presidential opponent. That's degrees worse than the stuff with the IRS - even the implication of foreign governments influencing our Presidential election should be chilling.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jul 25, 2016 -> 05:13 PM) While I don't want Trump, I will laugh at any pisspants Bernie supporter that complains about President Trump. Sigh. People too young to remember Nader costing Gore the election in 2000... imagine a world where the US never invades Iraq...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2016 -> 11:03 AM) It is actually a pretty savvy move, based on the polls I am sure. Look, there is a gigantic chasm between Clinton and Trump. So much so that a guy like Gary Johnson is polling with double digits simply based on the fact that so many people can't stand either major candidate. If you pick a person towards the center, instead of further left, maybe you dig back some of those centrists. A left wing VP gains you nothing. What are those people going to vote for Trump? Johnson? lol. Warren would have big appeal with Sanders voters who are one of the wild cards on the left. With that being said, I think Elizabeth Warren is extremely effective in the role that she's in. Making her VP probably reduces her influence, it doesn't strengthen it.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 21, 2016 -> 02:25 PM) But his statement about the Baltic states or of Ukraine in particular are just examples, right? It's him spitballing. Everything he said in that interview is consistent with his general foreign policy, which is we can't afford to be the world's police and other countries should start picking up the slack and/or starting paying us to be their defenders. He's an isolationist. That's part of it. Yes, we can argue whether that's good policy of the US or not, but it doesn't mean that it's Trump's desire to back out of NATO and let Putin run roughshod over eastern europe, which is what that article says and what bmags wants to believe. At what point is what Trump says meaningful and not "spitballing" to you?
-
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 21, 2016 -> 01:53 PM) Have you ever been involved in negotiations before? Leverage is the name of the game. From what I can tell based on that interview all he was saying was that he wanted some leverage. He did not say, as you want him to say, that he thinks NATO is a waste and we're getting out of it as soon as he's sworn in so Putin can take over the world because they're besties. But the leverage that he's talking about here is not assisting a NATO nation if they are invaded. That has massive ramifications in Eastern Europe, particularly in the face of a very aggressive Russia. It's not the first time that Trump has talked about leverage as if he were a private businessman negotiating a deal with a creditor. Remember when he said that he would tell America's creditors that they would take less money on America's debt? That works when you are in the private sector. That doesn't work when the ramifications are people stop lending to America, or lend at significantly higher rates. Yeah, the headline in that Atlantic article is bad, but an American Presidential candidate even implying that he might not honor the NATO treaty has major potential ramifications...

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 09:16 AM) Noah is probably the most overrated Bulls player ever, right? I mean he was a fan favorite but he always made a lot of coin for what he provided. Noah finished 4th in MVP voting in 13-14. His body really started to breakdown after that season, but to say that he was that overrated, at a minimum, ignores his 13-14 season (where we can all agree he wasn't great in the playoffs).

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 08:43 AM) I agree with this. Real world experience is so much more valuable than classroom experience. When I got my first IT job I learned more in my first 6 months there than I ever did in any of my classes. I'm sure a lot of other careers are similair. It's just not possible to duplicate the real world in a classroom setting. Yeah, the issue is that you still need to eat and put a roof over your head. So people who come from less have a hard time getting that unpaid real world experience than those who come from a more comfortable economic background. But no disagreement with the point that real world experience holds so very much value.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 29, 2016 -> 08:39 AM) That's the point I'm making. The government should have programs to expand these schools, or create their own programs to compete with them, as this type of investment is in the best interest of the country and it's citizens. Instead, we pile on the student debt load for college degrees that are often worth less in the job market than the tuition paid to get them...because college or bust! I don't disagree with this, but expanding trade schools and making college more affordable aren't mutually exclusive. At this point, if you don't learn a trade, or go to college, the path to a decent wage is as difficult as it has been since before WW2.

**SPOILER THREAD** GAME OF THRONES ** SPOILER THREAD **

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jun 27, 2016 -> 10:05 AM) I've never had a problem understanding why a show with over 150 named characters, spanning several continents isn't exactly linear. Maybe they should have title screens that say "6 months later. Slaver's Bay." My issue with the timeline is that the Game of Thrones necessarily implies that an act in one part of Westeros has an impact elsewhere in Westeros. For instance, Cersei sent Littlefinger to deal with the Boltons for harboring Sansa last season - who she believes aiding in killing Joffrey. His delay in so doing, and ultimately Littlefinger throwing his support behind Sansa should have all had consequences in King's Landing. Particularly since, during that time, Littlefinger went to the Vale, got the Knights of the Vale to Moat Cailin, showed up in Moletown to offer his support to Sansa, presumably returned to Moat Cailin, and showed up at Winterfell again. I accept that the storyline currently isn't exactly linear, but it is close enough to linear that characters doing things in a single scene that should take months while another character spends an entire season getting to the Citadel makes the overall timeline for each character a little difficult to follow (ie, where is Sam in time compared to Jon right now - are they caught up chronologically, is Sam months behind, etc.). -
All New Soccer Thread ~ All Levels ~ All Leagues

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 06:52 AM) I like the MLS and it has place but we can't be overly relying on MLS players to carry the load. For depth guys and for our players who are going through their first cycle and need the minutes then it's fine. Bradley came back for the money and has regressed. Omar Gonzalez probably hit a wall by staying in the league too long. Now he's in mexico so maybe things will get better. Jozy made some bad decisions after leaving The Netherlands and injuries haven't helped but he is too hot and cold since going to Toronto. Jordan Morris playing in Seattle is probably a good thing for now but eventually he needs to go to Europe. In the long run, MLS is critical to the USMNT. It provides greater opportunity for Americans to play professionally, thereby increasing the depth in the pool. And the Academies provide an opportunity for the most talented young guys to play professionally in their teens rather than resorting to the college route. IF the USMNT is ever going to be a top tier soccer side, the quality of MLS and youth development need to rise significantly. Like you said, ideally, the MLS provides depth and opportunity for the young guys while acting as a feeder system for European leagues. Ideally, the best Americans are still getting games overseas. I can't fault Bradley, Dempsey or Jozy for jumping at the big payday and increased stability in MLS, but in the short term, that's a bad trend. -

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jun 20, 2016 -> 12:42 PM) Sansa also didn't know Baelish would actually show up. She sent a request for help; that's no guarantee it will arrive. She should have told Jon about the possibility though. Do we honestly know that though? I mean, she was riding with them... -
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 17, 2016 -> 03:06 PM) "Yeah, FBI? This guy came into our store and a bought a gun. Looks suspicious. That's all the info we have. Thanks!" http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/17/us/orlando-s...teen/index.html Story on CNN. It's pretty ridiculous that this is front page news. This store is hyper vigilant. Per the story, they previously reported a bunch of Arabic looking guys buying police gear... who turned out to be police officers.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 17, 2016 -> 02:33 PM) You are correct, private sales do not need a check. That is what politicians who clamor for universal background check are talking about, but they always make it seem as if nobody anywhere gets any check whatsoever. There are private sellers that make people do background checks. And if the sale is across state lines, it is supposed to go thru a licensed dealer and a background checks. What little studying has been done, however, shows that most criminals steal their guns or buy them from some not so clean people. The type that would ignore any universal background check laws. Thanks, Alpha. Are you against registration (ignoring, for the moment, that it's not passable legislation at the federal level at the moment)? That seems like the only way you can really track private sales...

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 17, 2016 -> 02:30 PM) Did anyone hear more follow-up on the report that the owners of the store that sold the guns to the guy in Orlando called the FBI to report him, and the FBI ignored it? I thought I saw that the gun shop didn't have the guy's name, address, or any other identifying information, and the video footage was not of the greatest quality. I also thought I saw that the tape has since been wiped in the ordinary course of business, so they can't verify anything re: the video. I'm not sure what the FBI could have done with that. Sidenote, the "See Something, Say Something" mantra has always seemed like it's probably not that helpful to me. I don't envy the amount of noise those guys likely have to sift through.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 17, 2016 -> 02:17 PM) Quit playing semantics tex. By antis I usually refer to people that want to ban all or almost all guns. edit: To answer that, no i don't believe EVERYONE should be able to own ANY type of gun. People who have gone thru the legal system and have lost their rights are forbidden already, and automatic weapons are also a no no. There should also be a way to prevent people with certain mental health issues from obtaining them, but you would need to figure a way to balance that with medical privacy laws. Alpha, I'm admittedly not savvy on the intricacies of gun purchases, but my understanding is that a private seller can transfer a firearm to a private buyer without need for background check, licensing, etc. Assuming that my understanding is correct, doesn't that kind of undermine the system and allow for guns to fall into unqualified hands? Is there a problem with licensing and titling firearms like we do with vehicles?
